All my new things got delivered, but my anime shelf has reached critical mass. It’s a bit of a problem.
You see the donation of the Fullmetal Alchemist mangas from my stepdad, in addition to the Invaders DVD and Railgun S collection, has meant my anime and manga shelf has no more room. On top of that my two figure shelves are starting to get cramped and I have more on the way.
The worst part for me though is that the collection editions of Railgun and Railgun S are distributed by different companies and as a result have different designs.
Railgun is by Animatsu and is a single bluray case with multiple discs inside for the full season.
Railgun S is by Manga Entertainment and is a combo pack of two DVD cases containing the full season in bluray and DVD format.
This means the Railgun S box is not only twice as thick as the Railgun box, but also an inch taller!
IT RUINS MY SHELF.
But my real crisis is working out where the hell I’m gonna fit my new figures and incoming books. Looks like I will have to do an overhaul of my random storage shelves.

I’ve been making crazy progress on the outline for my Certain Magical Index fanfic.
Originally I was just exploring the premise of “what if you tried to change the outcome of an story only to accidentally make things worse” but it’s grown into a full what-if now.
I finally got to add in a couple of original arcs too, one even features the original main protagonist!
It’s a strange feeling to include multiple main characters because you don’t want to steal the spotlight from the other.
The problem is coming up with original esper abilities is really difficult. There’s a certain charm to the way they work, and it’s really hard to replicate.
I was quite pleased with myself today because I came up with an original villain who had an esper ability to manipulate density. By increasing somethings density he could decrease its size and vice versa.
Anyway if there are any To Aru fans in the readers for this, throw some original esper ability ideas at me!
(I’ve reached the Daihasei Fetsival and it’s really hard to write compelling sports competitions between espers when you’re super vague on what abilities the rivals have)

… I’m late. Really late.
It seems like I haven’t learned my lesson on stocking up chapters but anyway, here is this week’s update!
Yesterday, we are shown just how much special treatment a B-Rank hunter and above will get.
However! We still haven’t reached the Reward part of the chapter title! What exactly does this reward entail? Is it just a bait-and-switch with someone else being rewarded?! Is the reward only for people of certain “preferences”?! And will we finally see the light of the sun after being in the guild for who knows how many chapters?!

As previously announced, Re:Library will now be taking over the translation of this great web novel series. We already mentioned this before, but since each chapter is more or less about 6k ~ 9k characters in raw source, we will take that into consideration and split each chapter into an appropriate length, more or less about 3k ~ 4k characters each part. That’s about the average length of most other novels out there, which we believe is a good compromise for a novel this long.
Another thing that we should mention is that, since we are still in the middle of reviewing the past chapters, we won’t be translating this novel at full throttle just yet. For now, I’ve asked the translator to provide at least 1 part per month until we finish reviewing all the chapters. This chapter hasn’t been edited yet, we will come back to it later after the chapter reviews and change the terms as necessary. For now, enjoy the read.

Seems that he got roped into the Gender Bender genre by me and he has been picking up a few Gender Bender of his own. The only problem is that he’s the type that can’t seem to stick to one novel for long so don’t expect any long term investment from him though.

So we all know the reputation wuxias have for repetitive plots.
Been thinking about it a bit recently, and I think I’ve located the problem in their writing that causes this – a failed attempt at a chiastic structure. For those of you who don’t know chiastic (or “ring”) structure is an ancient and somewhat cyclical structure reminiscent of poetry used everywhere from the texts of the Abrahamic faiths, the Odyssey, the Illiad, and even the Hobbit (to name a few). It follows a pattern of callbacks, or even repeated events to draw the reader into the story. It is easy to see the attempt at this wuxia authors make, but issues arise with how frequently the inner cycles are executed without real progress being made for the main character – that is, the inner cycles that are being repeated serve no or limited narrative purpose that is never rewarded to the audience.
Imagine and MC that constantly goes to a new place, offends some young master, gets challenged by that young master, then kills the young master, then repeat (who am I kidding, you’ve probably read that plot so just remember, don’t imagine 😊). This structure doesn’t inherently make for a bad story, but it’s missing a few things that make it easy to tire of. The MC does not make any progress from this encounter – no treasure gained, no enemy made (as would be the case in a truer chiastic), no lesson learned. The MC has not gone anywhere for his troubles, he is exactly where he started – just with new paint. He doesn’t even remember the encounter. This is by far the biggest issue with the writing – a betrayal of the reader, a broken promise.
Adding some meaning to each of the encounters would allow readers to be drawn into the story. Well, there’s some other issues and fixes that could be done – but there’s a chap for you to read, so bye!
