Chapter 4: Friend or Foe

The man, or George, was sitting by the patio with his wife. He was reading a book about space and everything in it. It was a popular book written by a well-respected scientist back in his old world. It was his favourite book. He loved it so much because he loved to learn, and he loved to understand. This book allowed him to understand things which he had never even been able to comprehend before. When George went to paradise he discovered that there was so much more to the universe than what the book covered, but this made him love it even more. There was something fantastic about reading the words of someone who was truly ignorant of how massive and incredible reality really is.

But perhaps it was this lack of understanding which makes life so beautiful. Even in paradise George has very little knowledge about anything. He remembered back to the giants he saw back when he was in the line for the cauldron. He knows that there is so much more to life, and he knows that he will probably never know all of it. And he is okay with that.

George looked at his wife sitting next to him. She was bathing in the sunlight. His heart fluttered when he looked at her. There was a new kind of aspect to their relationship. Since they became young again they could do so much more. Not only were they completely in tune and spiritually in love, but for the first time in years they could also satiate a need for love physically. Youth truly is bliss.

However, even after such a long time he still had a strange feeling within his heart. He was so full of worry, worry for the red eyed baby, and it was making him anxious. He did not know why he felt this, but this anxiety was taking a toll on him. It caused George to have trouble sleeping, and when he did sleep he had horrible nightmares.

Every single time his mind begins to rest and he enters the world of dreams he has a nightmare. It is always the same nightmare. It would focus on a child with red eyes. George knew it was the red eyed baby, because those eyes are simply unforgettable. Every time he has the dream it begins with a lovely image of the little child playing in a field, but whenever George begins to feel happy for the child something bad happens. The sky turns dark and everything gets colder. A monster then approaches the child. It was always the same monster. It looked like a ghoul or a witch. It would trick the poor child and then devour the child’s flesh. Blood and horror ensues. George always tried to save the red eyed child, but he is unable to do anything to stop the horrible creature.

One morning George woke up in a cold sweat. He saw that his wife had already gone outside somewhere. He sat all alone and drenched in sweat. He had had the nightmare again.

“Why won’t they stop!?” He asked himself.

An idea suddenly popped in his mind. He remembered reading that writing down dreams can help someone understand if there were any problems. If he could identify the problems causing the nightmares, then that would be the first step to making them stop.

He thought of a diary and a pen, and the items appeared in front of him. Without a second thought he began to write. He did not write from his mind, but rather from his soul. He felt the words simply spill out onto the pages even though in his mind he did not even know what he was writing. As he continued to write he began to feel a comfortable feeling which quickly replaced the initially dark and evil feelings.

Eventually he finished writing. He read through everything that he had written. After reading just a sentence he noticed that the handwriting was strange. It was almost like a different person’s handwriting. He ignored this and began to read the exact words that he had written.

Fear, darkness, and void. Light shines upon the field of grass. It truly is strange. To have such a beautiful field of light surrounded by such darkness. However, even the light contains darkness. A horrible creature stands within the light. Suddenly the creature’s head twitches. It has seen something. A child steps into the bright field. His red eyes reflect the evil of the creature. The child speaks. He stands tall in front of the dark creature. Suddenly everything goes black. A crunch is heard. When vision returns there is blood on the floor. The child is gone.’

George nearly broke down in tears as he read the simple passage. Why was he so emotional about a child he spent such little time with? The rest of what he had written just repeated the same passage over and over. For some reason he knew that this dream meant something. He didn’t want the child to die. But what could he do?

Samuel woke up and saw the book next to his bedside table. He realised he fell asleep trying to read the book again, and he forgot to hide it. He was lucky that his parents didn’t find it. Whenever Samuel saw the book it made him feel so incredibly frustrated. He simply couldn’t understand a word of it, and it was killing him inside. His curiosity and need to learn never allowed him to have a moment where he did not think of the book.

He hid the book, got out of bed, and went off to play with Grace. He slouched everywhere he went. Ever since he read a bit of the book he had been in an angry and depressed mood. He had a strange obsession with it. He just had to learn what was in it, but he simply couldn’t.

He walked onto the market street to head towards the field, still deep in thought. He didn’t look where he was going and accidentally bumped into a large man. He looked up and saw an ugly annoyed face.

Samuel panicked a bit.

“S-Sorry Sir.” He said in slight fear.

The large man saw Samuel’s red eyes.

“Oh, you’re Richard’s kid.” He said in realisation “Haha. Don’t worry about it. Here.”

The large man threw a coin at Samuel, who just barely managed to catch it. The large man then walked off. Leaving Samuel just standing there looking at the coin in wonder.

The coin was copper, but what amazed Samuel were the small drawings and emblems all over it. His eyes widened. He suddenly remembered when he went on a small trip to the marketplace with his father. He remembered how his father had given a similar coin to a shopkeeper, who gave his father bread in return. Samuel suddenly realised what the coin was.

The coin must be something which forces people to give you things!’ He thought.

Samuel heart began to beat as he realised the value of the small copper coin in his hands. Of course, in reality, such a coin did not hold much value at all. It was just about enough to buy bread, but other than that it held little value. Unfortunately Samuel was not well educated on the monetary units in his country and he had misinterpreted this little coin to be worth something much more than it actually was.

Samuel stuffed the coin in his pocket and began to walk off towards the field to play with Grace. When he arrived he saw that Grace wasn’t there yet. He sat on the grass and began to think.

I want to learn whatever is in the book. Except, the only person or creature that might be able to help me would be the zombie witch in the forest.’

Samuel looked towards the forest in the distance. He remembered the encounter he had with the creature. When he thought back to that moment he realised something. The creature had never been hostile towards them. He was the only one who did anything wrong. Looking at the situation from the creature’s perspective would indicate that Samuel was the bad guy. After all, he stole the book from her.

Samuel remembered something his mother told him once.

Don’t judge a book by its cover.’ She said to him

Maybe the creature wasn’t evil at all. Perhaps it was all a misunderstanding.’ Samuel thought.

His thoughts were cut short by the arrival of a happy and smiling Grace.

“SAMUEL!” She screamed “PLAY!”

Samuel smiled and began to play with Grace. However, he couldn’t stop thinking about the zombie witch.

When playtime ended he looked at Grace and said “I won’t be able to play tomorrow.”

Grace was confused, but she saw the seriousness in Samuel’s eyes and nodded in understanding.

Samuel walked home. His mind was set. He would seek out the zombie witch and ask her for help. There was only one little issue. At the moment all he had done was be rude to the zombie witch. What incentive could the zombie witch possibly have to help him?

Samuel arrived at the door to his home. He knocked on the door, but there was no answer. Samuel looked at the sky and saw that it was only a couple hours past noon, meaning that his father was working and his mother was shopping. Samuel remembered that his mother gave him a key to the house in case there was no one home.

He reached into his pocket and felt around for the key. He pulled it out, but realised that instead of just the key, he was holding the coin along with it. His eyes widened. That’s it! He could give the coin to the witch and then she would have to help him. He unlocked the door and walked inside his house.

“Tomorrow.” He said to himself “Tomorrow I will meet the witch. And then I will finally learn what is in the book!”

The next day arrived quickly. Samuel told his parents he was going to play with Grace, but instead he headed off to the forest. He found himself confronted with the dark trees, void of light. He was terrified. But at the same time he was excited. Adrenaline rushed through his body at the thought of what he was about to do. He put one foot forward into the forest and felt a chill travel down his spine. A strange, nearly twisted, smile appeared on Samuel’s face. He entered the forest.

Due to the red cloths, which he had tied around the trees when he went into the forest with Grace, he could find his way fairly easily. The deeper he entered the forest the more fearful he became. Every piece of his body didn’t want to go deeper, but Samuel kept going. His heart beat like a drum, playing an anthem of fear.

Samuel didn’t understand death, but he knew he didn’t want it. He knew that if the witch was mad she could and would kill him. His life rested upon the coin.

Samuel’s head was filled with dark thoughts. But then he saw light.

“The field!” He exclaimed

He stopped before entering. He took a deep breath and attempted to calm his mind. With pure strength and resolve he stepped into the field.

Suddenly his body froze. An immense cold and evil feeling overtook him. The creature appeared in front of him. Her eye sockets stared him directly in the face. The stench from her rotten skin entered Samuel’s nostrils and made him want to vomit. Samuel had to force himself out of his state of shock.

“I have come here to apologise and make a deal with you!” He shouted at the witch.

Silence ensued.

“Speak.” The witch said in amusement.

“I’m sorry I stole your book!” He said “But I beg that you teach it to me.”

A horrible cackling sound emerged from the witch’s rotten mouth. Samuel could only interpret this as laughter.

“Tell me, child.” She said “Why would I teach you anything?”

Samuel swallowed his fears. Everything rested on this moment.

“Because I have this.” He took out the coin.

There was silence once again. The witch seemed shocked.

“A coin?” She asked in bewilderment.

Samuel didn’t know what this reaction meant.

“YOU OFFER A COIN!” The witch laughed “HAHAHA! A COIN! HAHAHA!”

Samuel didn’t find the situation quite so funny. It was clear that the copper coin was laughable in the eyes of the witch. This could bode death.

“I will not accept this coin.” The witch spoke again “But there is something you can give me.”

A glimmer of hope appeared on Samuel’s little face.

“Anything!” He offered the witch.

“Oh, that’s good.” The witch said “Well then, hand over your eyes.”

Samuel’s hope immediately disappeared, leaving a hole within his heart.

“M-My eyes?” He asked, wondering if he had heard her correctly.

“Yes. They are quite peculiar; I’d love to have them.” She said “As you can see, I’m missing a pair.”

She cackled as if it was the funniest joke in the world. When she saw the fear on Samuel’s face she sighed.

“Don’t worry. You won’t have to live without your eyes.” She said “After all, you’ll be dead before I take them!”

Her mouth opened up like a snake’s mouth. It expanded to a size ten times of what it should be capable of. The mouth was easily capable of swallowing a young child whole.

“Goodnight!” The witch shouted as she lunged towards the petrified Samuel.

Chapter 3: The Book

Samuel threw open the door to his home.  With a bright smile on his face he was about to walk in. However, before he could even step inside, his mother had already appeared in front of him.

“Where have you been, young man?” Evelina said calmly.

However, Samuel knew that she wasn’t calm. She was furious. Her face was red and her voice quivered with anger. Samuel knew that putting one foot wrong would lead to serious consequences.

“I… I was playing with Grace.” Samuel said, nervously smiling at his mother.

Evelina crouched down and looked Samuel directly in the eyes. It was as if she was looking into his soul. However, Samuel did not let the psychological penetration of Evelina affect his eyes. He stood tall with a perfect poker face.

“Why are you so late then?” She asked.

Samuel did not let his poker face falter.

“We lost track of time…” He said nervously.

Evelina sighed and let him in.

“Fine.” She said “But make sure to not be out this late again.”

Samuel breathed a sigh of relief.  If he had faltered at any second his mother would have pressed him harder, to the point where he might have had to reveal everything that had happened. And Samuel knew that if he said anything about what had happened his mother would never allow him to leave the house again.

It wasn’t that Evelina was overprotective, but rather that Samuel needed protecting. Not only was he often shy and had difficulty communicating, but he had red eyes. Everybody in the town was used to Samuel and he wasn’t seen as special or evil in any way, but what about outside of the town? How would someone react to seeing Samuel for the first time? Red was often synonymous with evil, and if Samuel was seen as such he would not live very long.

Seeing that Samuel was fine Evelina could also sigh in relief as she let Samuel in and closed the door.

Samuel went to sit down at the dinner table. He put his book down next to his plate and began to eat the wonderful meal his mother had made him. As the phenomenal smell of the meat on his plate entered his nostrils he nearly teared up. There was something about good food after a day of hard adventuring that made him truly appreciate life.

Just as Samuel was about to take a big bite of his luscious steak a large shadow emerged, covering both him and the table. Samuel suddenly felt two large hands grab him and begin to tickle him.

“Hahaha! Dad! Stop!” Samuel said while giggling.

Richard put down his son and sat on the chair next to him.

“You know. You worry your mother a lot when you’re out that late.” Richard said seriously.

Samuel looked a little guilty.

“I know. I won’t do it again.” He said.

Richard patted his sons head and said “Good.”

Richard looked over to the book near Samuel’s plate.

“What’s this?” He asked as he picked it up.

Samuel decided to make up a reason for why he had the book.

“I found it in the field.” He nervously said

Richard blew the dust off the book and read the title of the book.

“Possessing creatures…” He began to read the title but stopped halfway.

SLAP!

Samuel fell off his chair and held his cheek in pain. He looked up and saw his father standing over him. His eyes were serious and intense.

“Don’t. I repeat. Don’t ever even think about this book again.” Richard said “Forget it ever existed.”

Samuel, being a child, couldn’t understand the reason why his father lashed out in such a manner. He had never been hit by his parents, and his father had never even shouted at him before. In confusion Samuel could only begin to cry. Tears flooded down his face.

Evelina immediately rushed over to see what had happened. Upon seeing the look on Richard’s face she started. It had been a long time since her husband had made such a face. She knew something had happened. She looked at the pitiful Samuel, whom was lying on the ground crying. She picked Samuel up and carried him to his room, and locked the door so he couldn’t leave.

Samuel could only sit there, crying in confusion. But while he was confused, he was mostly just hurt. He was truly hurt that his father would hit him, and he couldn’t wrap his head around it.

Suddenly he heard his parents talking about something.

“Why did you hit him?” Evelina said angrily.

“Look.” Richard said, Samuel could only assume that he held up the book.

Samuel heard a gasp.

“A possession book manual!?” Evelina said “Our son found a possession book manual!?”

“Yes.” Richard said “Do you understand now?”

“Y-Yes…” Evelina said “But what are we going to do with it?”

Richard stayed silent for a bit.

“If anyone sees this book then we would be condemned, and we can’t let Samuel see it either.” He said “We would have to hide it…”

“Yes… Oh! I know where!” Evelina said

“Shhh!” Richard interjected “Don’t let him hear it.”

Suddenly Samuel couldn’t hear them anymore, but he seemed to understand the basic premise of what had happened. He understood that the book was very, very, bad. He also knew that it had something to do with possession, but he didn’t really understand what that was all about. With all these mysteries Samuel found a strong curiosity build up in his heart. He wanted to find the book, even if it meant going against his parents will. However, he simply had no idea where his parents would hide the book.

Unfortunately Samuel’s door was locked, and he still wasn’t really in the mood to go searching for a book. His only option was to sleep, and so he did.

In the morning Samuel found that his door was no longer locked. He walked out of his room and headed to the breakfast table. There his parents sat, with a tired expression on their faces. Samuel could only assume they spent the entire night hiding the book. He was still angry with his father, and he decided he wouldn’t speak to him until he apologised.

Samuel sat down at the table and began to eat, refusing to greet his parents.

Richard and Evelina looked at each other. Richard looked incredibly guilty, but he felt that he had to hit Samuel; otherwise he wouldn’t understand that the book was bad.

“Samuel.” Richard began to speak “Do not ever tell anyone about the book. I’m sorry that I hit you, but you must understand that having a book like that could lead to serious consequences.”

Samuel looked at his father. He was unsatisfied with his apology, but he knew he wasn’t going to get anything better.

He sighed and nodded in understanding.

Breakfast was long and rather awkward, so Samuel decided to take it as an opportunity to think about where his parents might have hid the book. He knew that if they spent all night on hiding it then it would definitely be hard to find. Samuel looked around the dining room for any clues. He focused his eyes as hard as he could on every area of the room. But all that led to were his eyes tearing up. He rubbed his eyes and began to look again, but this time things seemed to look a little different.

He noticed a small red fog, leading in a certain direction. Samuel’s eyes lit up. He didn’t know if his eyes were fooling him so he rubbed them again. He opened his eyes and saw that the fog had only gotten thicker. He excused himself from the table and began to follow the fog.

“What could he be up to now?” Evelina asked.

Samuel continued to follow the fog and he saw that it led into the basement. The basement was a dark and unwelcoming place. At least that was what his father told him. Samuel wasn’t allowed in the basement for one reason or another, and he never particularly wanted to go there either. But now it was different. The red fog led directly into the basement, and Samuel wasn’t going to let a bit of fear stop him.

He opened the hatch and found that it was unlocked. Probably because there was never any danger of Samuel wanting to go into the basement, since he was so afraid of it.

When Samuel entered he found that it wasn’t such a dark and horrible place at all. It was a cosy area, with lanterns still lit. There was a fancy wooden desk in the corner with an even fancier chair. There were several paintings on the walls. There was one with two people, a man and a woman, standing side by side. The man was tall, strong, and had a white beard. He resembled Samuel’s father a lot. The woman was slightly different. She was fairly short and stout, but her eyes were just like Richard’s.

“Are these… my grandparents?” Samuel asked himself.

He had never questioned why he hadn’t seen his grandparents before, but looking at them Samuel felt a little sad.

‘Are they still alive? Do they even know I exist?’ He asked himself.

He pushed these thoughts to the back of his mind and focused on finding the book.

He saw that there was a bookcase hidden in the darkest corner of the room. The red smoke seemed to encompass one book. He quickly grabbed it and looked at it, but he realised that it was not the same book. This one was clean and had a red cover, the one he had before was dirty and slightly blue. In addition to that this book had nothing to do with possession either, and seemed to be a romance novel.

However, the red smoke still seemed to point towards the book. Samuel thought back to his parents. This morning they seemed incredibly tired, and they definitely wouldn’t be tired if the book was simply hidden in the basement. He sighed, realising that the red smoke had led him astray.

He sat at the desk and looked at the painting of his grandparents. He realised that they didn’t have red eyes either. All of a sudden he felt a bit strange. He had always received strange looks from strangers. He knew he was different, and he didn’t like it. He felt so lost. Everybody always told him that he should be unique and be different, but he just wanted to be like everyone else. Normally one could relate to their parents or family, but even his parents had normal eyes. Samuel felt his eyes begin to tear up.

A single tear fell from his eyes onto the book in his hands. He looked at the wet spot on the book and began to see something strange. The tear seemed to dissolve the red cover. As the red began to dissolve he saw the cover of the old book emerge. He read the title out loud.

“Possessing Creatures: Basic Manual” He read.

He remembered his father saying the first two words. This was the book! But why was it different in the first place? Samuel was incredibly confused. He began to look inside the book, but realised that it was still the same romance novel. His eyes were still wet and a tear fell onto the pages of the book. Just like with the cover when his tears fell on the pages it revealed the pages from the old book. Samuel laughed in shock and happiness.

He looked at the book and he saw that it really was the exact same as before. He had no idea what had just happened, but he didn’t really care. He had his book. In excitement he began to read.

“The possession of creatures, both humanlike and other, requires a strong consciousness. It is important to understand that this possession does not mean to own a creature, but rather to truly possess it. To the point where it will be a part of you. In this manual one will learn how to split one’s own consciousness and control that split consciousness perfectly.”

Samuel’s head was spinning after reading that. He simply had no clue what the book was talking about.

‘What does it mean to possess something? What does consciousness even mean?’ He asked himself.

Samuel knew his limits. This book, even though it was supposed to be basic, was way above his ability. He simply did not understand anything the book was talking about.

He walked out of the basement with the book hidden underneath his shirt. Grace was going to be mad if he didn’t go out to play so he put the book in his room and began to walk towards the field.

On the way to the field Samuel began to think.

If I want to understand the book then I would need someone to help me. But it’s apparently really evil, so it’s probably a bad idea to just ask someone. If only there was someone who could help me with it.

He eventually made it to the field. He saw Grace sitting there, clearly annoyed that she had to wait so long. He looked in the distance and saw the forest. A dangerous idea appeared in his mind, but he laughed it off.

No. That would be insane.’ He thought to himself.

Chapter 2: His First Adventure

Samuel faced his fears and walked past the 100 meter point. This was the furthest he had ever been from his home while alone. He walked for a bit longer and found himself to be on the market street not too far from his home.

“Aah! Samuel! What are you doing out here on your own?” A woman said.

Samuel knew this woman. Her name was Laura and she was his mother’s best friend. Laura was wearing a large purple fur coat, which was rather strange since it was the middle of summer. She was an interesting character. Laura was not a pretty woman; she had a flat face and generally normal features. However, her personality was not normal in any way. She spoke as if she were an important lady, when in reality she actually came from a humble middle class family. She loved gossip and was known as the one person in the village that you should never tell a secret to. However, this uniqueness of her was probably the reason why Samuel’s mother and Laura were such good friends.

Samuel felt rather uncomfortable with Laura staring at him so intensely and could only muster a small whisper in reply.

“I.. I am on an adventure..” he said.

While Laura did make him feel extra uncomfortable Samuel tended to be rather shy when it came to speaking to anyone other than his parents.

“An adventure, huh…” Laura thought for a bit. Suddenly, her face lit up.

“I’ve got an idea!” She said “Why don’t you bring along Grace. She’d love to play with you!”

Underneath the large coat a small girl emerged. She looked to be around 6 years old. She shyly smiled at Samuel. However, her large brown eyes showed a hint of mischief.

When Samuel saw those eyes he shivered. Laura and her daughter had visited his house many times, and every time that Grace played with him he had gotten hurt in one way or another. Grace only spoke in single word sentences, however, even with this limit in her communication she always managed to make her intentions clear.

Before Samuel could say anything he saw that Grace had already grabbed his hand and Laura had disappeared.

“SWORD!” Grace exclaimed while looking at Samuel’s sword.

She grabbed it and immediately began to slice the air with it.

“…That was my birthday present.” Samuel said with tears in his eyes.

Grace looked at Samuel and seemed to feel guilty.

She looked at Samuel and held the sword out while shouting “SORRY!”

Samuel looked at her and shyly said “You can play with it too if you want…”

A big smile appeared across Grace’s face and she gave Samuel a big hug before pointing in the direction of a big field.

“FOLLOW!” She shouted.

Grace dragged Samuel along to the field, where they played by slicing the grass with the sword and having pretend fights. After a couple of hours they collapsed together on the grass. They were exhausted, but both were happy.

Grace suddenly stood up and pointed towards the ground.

“TOMORROW!” She said.

Samuel understood what she meant by that and nodded in response.

That day he walked home with a massive smile on his face. He completely forgot about the fact that he was so far away from home. Luckily he knew the way back. That day was not much of an adventure, but Samuel considered it to be training so that in the future he be able to have a real adventure.

The next day Grace and Samuel played together in the same field, and again the day after. They ended up playing together every single day. Due to Grace being so direct there were rarely arguments or misunderstandings. Samuel genuinely felt comfortable around her.

About a month later Samuel had his mind set. He wanted to go on an adventure, and if Grace went with him then he wouldn’t be afraid of anything.

Samuel was not the type of child to blindly attempt something. He had already created an intricate plan for what the adventure would be.

When he arrived at the field he saw that Grace was already there. Before she even had the chance to greet him Samuel began to speak.

“We are going on an adventure!” Samuel said loudly and assertively.

Grace was shocked by this behaviour, but seemed to be incredibly excited.

“WHERE!?” She asked

Samuel had a smug smile on his face as he revealed his plan.

“We will go to the forest!” He said.

“FOREST!” Grace said in wonder and slight fear.

The forest was the place where they were not supposed to go. It wasn’t necessarily dangerous, but a small child could easily get lost. Luckily Samuel had already prepared small pieces of red cloth, so that they could mark where they had been so they wouldn’t get lost.

Without another word they went on their way. Grace seemed incredibly happy and excited, even more so than usual.

When they reached the forest they both began to have second thoughts. The forest was dark and the trees seemed immensely high for the six year olds. However, Samuel would not give up now. He tied a red piece of cloth to a tree and walked in. Grace hesitated slightly and then walked in, following Samuel closely.

They walked slowly through the dark trees. They used a system where they would mark every fourth tree. However, Samuel had only brought so many cloths, and they both knew that they would eventually walk out.

After they were quite far in Grace pulled on Samuel’s sleeve. Samuel stopped and looked at her.

“Grace… We can’t stop until we’ve done something. This is an adventure!” Samuel said.

Grace still wasn’t very optimistic or happy. Suddenly, Samuel grabbed her hand and held it tight and dragged her along.

Grace was surprised by how dominant Samuel was, and she somehow felt a bit safer and ready to keep going.

The pair kept going deeper and deeper into the forest, and as they got deeper the forest got darker as well. Light had trouble piercing the dense leaves and Samuel realised that it was difficult to see even a couple meters in front of him, causing him to be rather nervous about if they would be able to find their way back. Because of this Samuel decided that they could only continue to move and hope for the best.

Suddenly, they saw a very bright light a couple meters away from them. They walked and saw that there was a small field. There were no trees in this small field, but there was a small lake. However, what was most surprising was the small log cabin in the middle of the field. The entire area was like a masterful scenic painting.

While entering the open area Samuel and Grace sighed in relief. Samuel breathed in the cool air and felt safe again as the light cascaded upon his skin. One never appreciates something until they have lost it, and Samuel felt this exact way about the bright area. Samuel decided to go towards the cabin. If he was lucky there would be someone that lived there, who might find it within themselves to help them get back to the town.

Grace and Samuel approached the cabin. Samuel knocked on the door, but alas there was no answer. After a couple more tries his curiosity got the better of him and he opened the door to look inside. The interior of the cabin was fairly quaint. There was only one small window, which provided all the light within the cabin, causing the rest to appear rather dark. There was a small fireplace, a table, and a bed. Samuel was disappointed by what was inside. The inside was very dusty and it was hard to breathe, leading Samuel to believe that no person lived there anymore. He made sure to inspect every corner of the cabin. Just as he was about to give up on searching for something he saw a book. It was in the darkest corner of a cabin. It was too dusty to make out the words on the front of the book, but nevertheless it enticed Samuel, and he quickly picked it up.

After they thoroughly searched the cabin Samuel left to join Grace, who was waiting outside. However, when he exited the cabin he saw not only Grace, but also a beautiful woman standing in front of her, talking to her. Samuel quickly went to see what was going on.

As he got closer he became even more shocked by the beauty of this woman. Even though he was young, and he did not really know anything about attraction between individuals he was still able to recognise how truly pleasing the woman’s appearance was.

The woman had long and straight black hair, blue eyes, and incredibly white skin. The contrast of these colours was fit incredibly well with the woman’s appearance. She had a small nose, large eyes, and thin alluring lips. The woman was wearing a small blue skirt, which perfectly showcased her wonderful curves.

“Oh, hello!” She said while looking at Samuel “You know it’s not nice to look through other people’s things?”

Samuel seemed a bit embarrassed, but then asked “Do you live here all by yourself?”

“Yes.” The beautiful woman responded.

Grace watched the beautiful woman talk to Samuel and seemed a bit scared of what she might do to him.

The beautiful woman approached Samuel, and seemed ready to scold him and take the book. However, when she got close Samuel’s eyes began to hurt incredibly much.

“AAAAGH!” Samuel screamed while holding his hands in front of his eyes.

“SAMUEL!?” Grace screamed in worry.

The beautiful woman also did not seem to understand what was happening, and she immediately backed off from the screaming child.

To Samuel it felt as if hundreds of ants were biting his naked eyes. He wanted to cry, but instead of tears a thick red liquid poured out. The second the liquid touched his hand he felt an excruciating pain and immediately removed his hands from his eyes. The liquid was like acid, and when it touched the ground it completely dissolved the grass.

The dripping continued for a couple seconds, and when it stopped so did the pain. When he looked up one could see that his eyes were even redder than before, like two shining rubies. His pupils seemed to pulsate.

When Samuel looked up he went to look at where the beautiful woman was, but he realised there was no longer a beautiful woman. Instead there was a zombie like creature in front of him. It was like a corpse of a human. The eyes were gone and the nose had already fallen off. Where there used to be teeth there was instead just a gaping black hole, which seemed to be capable of eating a soul.

When Samuel saw this in front of him he began to scream. Survival instincts kicked in and he grabbed Grace and began to run. He ran far into the forest.

Back in the field the now not so beautiful woman stood there shocked.

“Could he see my true appearance?” she asked herself.

Samuel and Grace were running through the forest trying to find a way out. Samuel’s eyes had luckily gone back to normal. Grace suddenly grabbed Samuel’s hand and pulled him back, causing him to fall over.

He looked at Grace in anger.

“What did you do that for?” He angrily asked

For the first time Grace spoke using proper sentences.

“Why did you run away?” She asked

Samuel looked at Grace in shock. How could she not have seen that evil creature?

“Didn’t you see!? She was like a witch or a zombie!” Samuel exclaimed.

Grace seemed confused. In her view the woman stayed beautiful the entire time, and it was only Samuel that had been strange in the situation.

“But she was so pretty.” She mumbled to herself.

Samuel didn’t say anything else and instead stood up and continued to walk. Eventually they found a red cloth and they managed to find their way out. When they exited the forest they realised that it had already turned night and they went they both left each other to go home.

The entire time Samuel couldn’t help but think about his eyes and what had happened. How did he see something that Grace couldn’t? He looked towards the book in his hand and wondered what it could be about. He felt his heart begin to beat again. Today he had successfully stolen a book from an evil creature. It was like a real adventure. It was almost cooler than python slayer Warwick. He realised that he sort of enjoyed the day. Even though it had been dangerous, painful, and terrifying he felt like he wanted to do it again.

With a smile on his face he ran home. He was hungry, and after a day like this he deserved a big meal.

Chapter 1: The Boy Named Samuel

The old man opened his eyes and looked around. He saw an incredible world around him. It was a beautiful world. It was similar to many gardens he had been in before. There were flowers, trees, and grasses of innumerable quantities. The sky was blue with not a cloud in sight. There was an ambience of tranquillity.

A path led through all the flowers and trees which led to a mansion. The mansion looked old, but it was still in incredible shape. It reminded him of the house he wanted when he was a kid. He wasn’t born rich, and he used to dream of having a house like this. This made him rather happy.

As the old man walked around he found that his body had changed.

“I guess I’m not so old after all.” The old man said.

His body had become youthful again. He jumped up in amazement and happiness. However, there was one thing missing. He scanned all over for that missing thing, until finally his eyes rested upon her.

A beautiful woman sat by the patio of the mansion. Her long blonde hair rested on her shoulders and she held a peaceful smile. She was looking at a picture gallery of their wedding. The man teared up just looking at her. The second she saw him she began to run towards him with tears in her eyes. They shared an embrace filled with love and true happiness. As they shared their embrace he felt in his head that this was true bliss, and that he would happily spend eternity with this woman.

Time seemed to fly in paradise. Every day passed by quickly and joyfully. During this time the man had found out about many things. He realised that just by thinking about what weather he wanted it to be it would change to that weather, and if he ever wanted a material item he would simply have to think it, and it would appear in front of him. However, a material item was nothing when compared to the true beauty of paradise.

In his previous life the man had been an avid outdoorsman. He had walked on many mountains, walked many long hikes, and was a passionate environmentalist. And yet, even with his vast experience of seeing beautiful picturesque scenes in nature he had never experienced as beautiful a place as this paradise. The trees, the rivers, the lakes. It all came together like an orgasmic constellation of true natural beauty. With such beauty you’d imagine that the man would get used to it, but the sight never got old to him.

Even with all of this together the man still had one concern. The red eyed baby. Perhaps there was some sort of parental instinct that made him feel uncomfortable having left the baby behind, or maybe there was something else. Ever since he saw the baby he felt a strange connection to it. He just wanted to know if the baby was all right. He looked up towards the sky and saw the two suns that lit up the paradise.

Perhaps he is out there somewhere. In a different universe or dimension.’ The man thought ‘Maybe the baby had been born again, and will be loved again.’

A voice suddenly broke his thought.

“George! What do you want to eat?” His wife asked.

The man, or George, smiled at the sight of his wife. Even with the baby gone he would never, ever, regret his decision of choosing paradise.

“Honey.” He said “I would eat rocks if it made you happy.”

Somewhere in a different dimension entirely there was a planet, and on that planet there was a country called Aegria. Within Aegria there was a town called Firden. It was a quaint little village. It was placed within the grasslands of the country, but there was a small forest just by the side of it. Rivers coming from the mountains provided the town with clean water.

On one summer morning there had been a strange occurrence in Firden. A baby had been born with red eyes! The mother and the father both had brown eyes, so a baby being born with red eyes was rather peculiar.

The strange baby had been born into the Terret household, where he was given the name Samuel. The Terret household was one of the richer families within Firden. They were known for their connections to one of the noble houses in the capital.

Samuel was lucky to have been born in a family such as this. Any other family might have thrown out a baby with red eyes, as red could be sound of evil or malevolence, but the Terret family took the opposite approach. They boasted about how their son had beautiful red eyes, and showed him often, as if he were a prize of some sort. Somehow the Terret family’s openness and willingness to show off Samuel caused the rest of the town to no longer worry about Samuel. If anything, he had become a minor celebrity.

As time passed the celebrity status of Samuel began to fade and his life began to get more normal. He was just a little child living happily with his parents. His red eyes had simply become a physical feature, and he was no longer judged by them.

One morning Samuel lay peacefully in his bed. Suddenly a sound was heard outside. It was their neighbours annoying rooster again. The rooster had some problems with its understanding of the day and night cycle and it would often crow at random times during the night. However, for once, the rooster actually crowed right when morning came.

The second Samuel heard the rooster he jumped out of bed, already fully dressed. With a big smile on his face he ran towards the door of his room. He did a little jump to reach the handle and managed to open the door. His red eyes glistened with mischief as he ran across the empty halls of his house.

Eventually at the end of the hall he reached the final room. He opened the door in a similar fashion as how he opened his bedroom door. This revealed the sight of his parent’s bedroom, with his parents still snoozing on the massive bed. A gleam of light flashed across his red eyes as he ran and jumped right on top of the body of his father.

“PAPAA! MAMAA!” Samuel squealed out.

“Uuughh.”

Both of his parents groaned simultaneously.

“Leave us alone! It’s too early!” Samuel’s father said playfully.

“NOOO! It’s my birthday!” Samuel exclaimed while giggling as his father tickled him.

Samuel’s parents eventually managed to get out of bed and got dressed. They marched together towards the kitchen. The entire time Samuel was singing about his birthday. His parents exchanged smiles at the sight of their happy son.

They all sat down at the dining table. The light shone from the windows, revealing the happy family in all its glory.

Samuel’s mother was called Evelina. She was the most beautiful woman in all of Firden. She had bright brown eyes, light freckles, and ginger hair. However, while she looked lean and frail she was truly a devil when she got angry; at least from the perspective of Samuel.

Samuel’s father was rather different from Evelina. He was called Richard, and had the true body and look of an honourable knight. He was a large man, standing at an impressive 190 centimetres tall, and while he had gained a bit of weight after he stopped working in the army he still had his strong cheekbones and generally handsome look. He currently worked as a guard in the town.

Richard and Evelina were a typical love story. They grew up together in Firden, but grew distant when Richard went to leave for the army. Several years later they saw each other by pure coincidence in the capital city, they hit it off again and the rest was history.

“Samuel! Guess what present papa got you?” Richard said excitedly.

“WHAT! A present? For me?” Samuel reacted hysterically to the concept of getting a present.

“Before we do that shouldn’t we sing happy birthday?” Evelina said.

In unison Evelina and Richard began to sing the happy birthday song. Samuel tried to sing along, but it was a bit too difficult for him to follow the words.

After the song was finished Samuel had become even more restless.

“I want my present…” He mumbled.

“Yes, yes. Here it is.” Richard handed the present to him “It’s your sixth birthday so I thought you should have something special.”

Samuel inspected the present and looked at it for a while. Suddenly he realised what it was. It was a sword. But it was not just any other sword, it was a model after his favourite book character called Python slayer Warwick. Samuel always requested to listen to this book as a bedtime story. In the story Warwick has a longsword made of pristine steel and had a handle made out of the scales of a python. While Samuel’s sword was made of wood it had been painted to look exactly like the one in the book.

Samuel hugged his mother and father before immediately running into the backyard to slay some mighty ants.

“I guess he’s more like me than I thought.” Richard said as he saw his son run outside.

Samuel was chasing after some butterflies with his sword until he realised he had gone a bit too far from home. Samuel was an incredibly cautious and careful child. He would not go further than 100 metres from his house unless his parent’s accompanied him. This did mean that there was not much opportunity for Samuel to make any friends. However, this did not bother him much. For Samuel found playing alone entertaining enough.

He slowly walked back to his house. Suddenly he stopped. He looked at his sword and thought back to the books of Warwick the python slayer. At that moment he decided that now that he had a sword he had to go on an adventure.

Prologue: Old, young, and whatever is in the middle

An old man walked the mountain path with determination. He had a smile on his face and his eyes looked forward towards the glowing sun. He would reach the top; there was no doubt about that. One might expect an old man such as this one to have trouble reaching the top of a mountain, but this was no ordinary old man. For this old man was very rich; both in mind and reality. He possessed only the finest clothing and shoes. His watch was made out of gold and his cane was made out of wood imported from Ginya. However, these possessions did not matter to the old man. What he truly valued was his fantastic successful son, his beautiful daughter, and his two genius grandchildren. This was what this old man had. The old man had lived a fulfilling life. However, not all was so perfect. Just a month ago his wife had died. She was worth more to him than even the sun which lights up the world.

As the old man continued to walk up the mountain he began to sing a song, his voice was old and he could not manage the high notes, but one could tell that he sang it very happily. The song was an old song his mother used to sing to him when he was young. It was in an old language and he never understood what it meant, but whenever he heard it he felt warm inside. His mother used to tell him that the words in the song were not important, and it was rather the way one sang it.

Eventually the old man reached the top of the mountain. It was flat and rocky, with each side being a cliff other than the side the old man walked up on. However, the man did not stop walking, even while at the top. He walked with more vigour than ever. Each step was faster and faster, his pace going past that of what an old man should be capable of. Unfortunately, the old man reached a point where there was no longer a ground to walk on. His feet hit the air and went straight through it. His body fell down the mountain; the smile on his face never fading.

The old man was not afraid as death came to him. Luckily his vision went black before he could reach the ground, probably due to the physical shock of falling. However, surprisingly after an unknown amount of time the eyes of the old man opened up again. He looked around and saw the most immense and incredible spectacle he had ever seen. It was the afterlife.

It was as if he was standing within the cosmos. There were stars and galaxies all around him. It was a sky he had never truly been able to appreciate in his previous life; he somehow felt that this sight completed him. As the old man looked around more he saw that he was standing in a line. The line consisted of all types of people and other creatures. These creatures were rather peculiar, as if they came from a different reality entirely. There were giants, dwarves, half animal human hybrids; the list went on and on. The old man was not shocked by much, but these creatures did make him very curious about where they all came from. Were there multiple realities? In his life the old man had travelled the world, gone to space, and married a wonderful woman. And yet, now the old man was wondering how little of the universe he understood or ever saw.

Suddenly the old man heard a noise.

“WAAAH! WAAAH!” a baby cried.

The old man turned around and saw a crying baby. Seeing this made him rather sad. It was clear that the baby died not long after birth. To think of a child dying before their parents was a depressing thought. Parental instincts kicked into the old man and he picked up the baby. However, even then the baby would not stop crying. Suddenly an idea appeared in the old man’s head. He began to sing the song. The song of his mother.

Somehow the second he began to sing the baby calmed down and stopped crying. For the first time the old man could properly get a look at the little baby. It was clear that the baby was a boy, however, what struck the man most about the baby were its eyes. It wasn’t that the baby’s eyes were particularly large or small, but rather that they were bright red. The eyes presented a curious intelligence. It was as if they could look straight through you.

Suddenly the old man’s daze was broken by the screams of a voice.

“NEXT!” The high pitched voice screamed.

The old man looked to see where the voice was coming from, but he saw no source of the sound. All he saw was a giant cauldron, right in front of him. Within it was a boiling mixture of red and blue liquids. The mixture looked rather ominous. However, even though the mixture was so ominous the old man had a strong urge to jump in. The blue and red attracted him, it was so inviting. There was something within his mind that made him really want to jump in. He looked at the baby in his arms and was about to put him down and jump in, but as he looked at the curious red eyes of the baby he began to have second thoughts.

I can’t leave him unattended. Can I?’ The old man thought.

In a slight moment of madness the old man jumped into the cauldron with the baby in his arms. Once again his vision went black, and once again he opened his eyes to an unfamiliar sight.

He was in a fully white room with not a door or window in sight. The baby was still in his arms. After looking around he found himself standing in front of a man. The man looked middle aged, but he had a long white beard and white hair. The middle aged man’s dark blue eyes appeared to hide endless amounts of knowledge.

“You have lived a fulfilling life.” The middle aged man said to the old man.

The old man was still too confused by his surroundings to answer.

“I will give you a choice.” The middle aged man said “Either, you can start a new life in a new world, with no recollection of your previous life, or you can go to live in paradise with your wife for eternity.”

The old man regained his senses. He looked at the middle aged man and thought about what he had asked. He knew that he had to respond, but what decision would he make? He thought of all the possibilities of a new life. He could truly live again, love again. It was an inviting proposal. But then an image of his wife appeared in his mind. The old man smiled a little bit and realised that there was no life for him without his wife, otherwise he would not have left his old world in the first place.

“I will go to paradise to live with my wife.” The old man said resoundingly.

The middle aged man smiled and within an instant the body of the old man disappeared. This left the baby and the middle aged man in the room alone.

“And where do you want to go little man?” the middle aged man asked the baby.

Unsurprisingly there was no response other than the blinking of the confused red eyes of the little baby.

“I’d say that you are deserving of a new life.” The middle aged man said “I cannot control your fate, little man, but I can give you a little advice.”

The man squatted down and put his finger up to the baby’s temple. A message was sent into the baby’s mind.

Never let your hatred overcome reason. Keep a heart of stone as your enemies whimper.

Those were the words that were transmitted into the baby’s mind. They were simple words, but they clearly meant a lot to the middle aged man, whose eyes had moistened as he performed the action.

The middle aged man picked up the baby, who had already fallen asleep.

“Goodbye little man.” The middle aged man said.

And so the baby disappeared.

[Vol 4] Chapter 55: Svecko’s Power

As snowflakes fell from the sky, Willard couldn’t help but sigh in praises of Svecko’s domain. One flake at a time brought about great changes in the temperature of the battlefield. If Willard had not cultivated the peculiar red energy, he probably would not have been able to completely withstand Svecko’s domain.

At this point in time, the snow had slowly started to accumulate on the ground. Each snowflake piled on top of each other, creating a thin outline of a snowy surface. “I take it your response is no,” Willard said staring up at the sky at Svecko, who had an unamused look. ‘Such a waste.’ Svecko thought to himself. Svecko couldn’t believe such an ignorant martial practitioner existed. He was also slightly hesitant to kill Willard because of his tremendous potential. The best case scenario would have been for him to recruit someone as talented as Willard. ‘Why am I this unlucky to meet such a fool?’ Svecko angrily cursed inwardly.

“Who would have thought this brat would have been this foolish? You will surely die today.”  Darey joyfully said as he watched from the distance.

Willard, who was currently receiving the full brunt of Svecko’s domain, exhaled slowly and watched as the water vapor in his breathe slowly condensed. “If you are just going to keep staring at me from there, I would be excusing myself,” Willard said as he took small steps heading towards the Minya forces. A small smile erupted on his face as he was walking towards the Minya forces.

Svecko stared at Willard who was walking in the opposite direction from him he couldn’t help but shake his head. Suddenly, a white piercing light quickly spread through Svecko’s entire body. Svecko’s body completely transformed into snow after the light was done spread through his body. The next instant, Svecko had appeared behind Willard. His movement was succinct and unnoticeable to the spectators of the current battle. “Die!” Svecko said as he stretched out his right hand aiming for the back of Willard’s skull.

As Svecko’s hand moved towards the back of Willard’s head, Svecko noticed the pressure of his domain drastically reduce, which prompted him to immediately halt his attack and withdraw his hand. Staring strangely at the sky above him, he noticed the attack on his domain had come from the sky above. Suddenly, a violent streak of purple lightning descended from the sky and aimed directly for Svecko.  Svecko moved his right palm in anticipation of the lightning’s path. Although invisible to the naked eyes, a clear wall of ice had formed as a defense to the lightning. As the lightning collided with the ice defense, short purple fragments of lightning were reflected all around Svecko.

His eyebrows were creased as he stood in place defending the lightning attack. Svecko gave a side glance at Willard’s direction, thinking that he would have most assuredly died from the deflected lightning, but to his surprise, not only was Willard still alive, he was currently bathing in that lightning. Suddenly Svecko seemed to have realized something, but kept most of his attention on the lightning.

After the onslaught of lightning had died down, Svecko turned to look at Willard. The domain he had originally set up had been completely broken by the intrusion of the lightning. Svecko’s expression had completely changed as he stared somewhat dumbfounded at Willard. “How is this possible?” Svecko thought to himself as he continued to stare at Willard. “He clearly was using elemental energy earlier? So how is it that he is able to manifest saint lightning?” In this particular mortal world, the martial practitioners were capped at the saint level, so they had termed the tempest existence as saints and equivalently termed the elements saints were capable of unleashing as saint level elements.

“What a pity. I was truly hoping to kill you quickly while you had your guards down.” Willard said to Svecko who seemed lost for words.

“Are you a saint level martial practitioner?” Svecko coldly asked.

“Why ask? You should already know the answer to that question.”

Without saying a word, Svecko seemed to have disappeared into the wind as he charged towards Willard. Willard in turn had been anticipating the retaliating response from Svecko as he utilized his movement technique accordingly to evade Svecko’s attack. They were like hummingbirds as they dashed from one spot to the other. From each interaction, explosions followed by purple fragments of lightning and ice were left as remnants.

Ducart who was currently sitting on the saddle of his horse, slowly dropped to the ground. He couldn’t believe what his eyes were seeing at the moment. He subconsciously did not want to believe it, but the irrefutable truth was right in front of him. “How can this be? It has only been less than three years.” He thoughtlessly said to himself as he continued watching. Every single warrior and mage in the Minya army held their breaths in shock. They couldn’t believe they had been foolishly competing against some on that level.

After a couple of exchanges, Svecko stopped his attack and stared deeply at Willard. The look on his face changed from that of anger to appreciation. He did not particularly respect Willard, but rather he was impressed with his talent. “Truly remarkable,” Svecko said before he chuckled. “You must be training in a very unique path of cultivation. Your talents are much more impressive than I had ever imagined.” He continued with a slight smile on his face. “Against weaker saints, you should be able to tie them down, but unfortunately you have me as an opponent.” Svecko nodded his somewhat disappointedly. “A pity. It is truly a pity. I must kill you now.”

Although Willard was his opponent, Svecko felt some pain killing such a bright talent. Not only was Willard cultivating in a unique path, which required heaven defying talent, he was also very young. His battle acumen was also very high and when added together, all those qualities would have truly made him one of the greatest saints of their world. To Svecko, it was quite unfortunate that he had to kill such a talent.

“March forward and get this battle over with” Svecko’s voice loudly echoed through the Minya warriors battle front. From the tone of Svecko’s voice, they could tell he was obviously agitated. Aswan who was the commanding warrior of the entire Minya forces immediately started leading the rest of the warriors to go assault the Gerret household. Willard had an ugly face as he heard those words from Svecko. His entire plan had changed upon the appearance of Svecko, who was a saint. He had changed his plans to just tie Svecko and the Minya forces down to give enough time for re-enforcement to join the Gerret camp.

Dangling and flowing round Willards entire body were sparkles of lightning. Svecko noticed the change in Willard, and could pretty much guess what Willard was about to do. Lightning charged down from the sky aiming for Aswan and the Minya warriors as they began riding in the direction of the Gerret household. The lightning was met by a protective ice shield that took the brunt of the impact before it broke down and deflected the rest of the lightning.

“Forget it child.” Svecko said as he withdrew his hands to cross them behind his back. “There four known levels for saints in our world. The first are the newly ascended saints those who have mastered just one law.” Willard couldn’t help but think back to his battle against Aorah. After the intrusion of the old man with the staff, Willard knew of the difference within saints. “The second are those who have mastered more than one law.” Willard stared deeply at Svecko, because he knew was at least on this level and above.  “The third are those who have combined two or more laws. For the fourth level, you don’t even need to know about them.” Willard knew that Svecko had to at least be on the third level or above. From their earlier exchange where Svecko had used ice, he could tell that vecko had combine laws of two different elements, water and wind, and had used them to form both the ice and snow he showed earlier.

“You can probably hold your own against a level one saint. You might even be able to stay alive against a level two saint. But against a level three saint, you can forget about staying alive. Come let me show you difference in levels within saints.” An unknown sense of danger ripped Willard as he heard those words from Svecko. He knew Svecko was strong, but he really couldn’t quantify his strength. Willard had spent far too few years on this mortal world and was lacking in knowledge. Although he had some faith in himself, but he couldn’t afford to be overconfident.

A strange white glow of light appeared from the center of Svecko’s head as he shut his eyes, which gave the sense that he was meditating. The glow seemed to strangely be reducing almost as if it was being condensed. Willard stood in place and watched as the glow on Svecko’s head condensed. The moment the projecting light completely condensed, Svecko opened his eyes. His entire eyeball had turned completely white giving a sense of lifelessness in his body. Willard could instantly feel the noticeable difference in the level of power, as Svecko’s majestic aura seemed to rise to even greater heights.

Within a carriage heading for the Gerret household, Jayesh was currently conversing with a counterpart who seemed to be in high spirits. When suddenly Jayesh’s counterparts jolly atmosphere changed to a more serious one. He moved his gaze pass Jayesh, seemingly staring through the interiors of the carriage to the ends of the world. “Not good. Why has he gotten serious now” Jayesh’s counterpart said before disappearing from carriage.

[Vol 4] Intermission 1: The Mysterious Fortuneteller

Tiffania After Saito’s business with the Village Chief of the Hidden Village was done, in a certain town far away, Tiffania had just arrived with a small squadron of scouts. This was the third day of their search for the missing princess, and the first village they arrived at after the search commenced.

Tiffania immediately sent the scouts to gather information in the town. She herself went to the back alley to look for a certain someone. Needless to say, Ragna was going with her. ⌈1

The atmosphere in the back alley was gloomy, the number of people walking in the main street compared to the back alley was worlds apart. The buildings in the back alley also looked shady when compared to ones at the side of the main street. Hardly anyone would come to this area, unless they had some shady business to conduct.

But of course, the reason Tiffania came to the back alley was not to conduct some shady business. The back alley was also home to brokers, who buy and sell information. That’s right, Tiffania came to the back alley specifically to meet a certain broker.

As expected, even Tiffania felt uneasy in this kind of gloomy environment. She was secretly casting a glance left and right in a fluster. On the other hand, Ragna was totally unfazed.

As they continued to walk on the empty street, they eventually arrived in front of what looked like a pub. The building was made out of woods like the other buildings in the surrounding. On top of the pub, directly above the entrance, hanged the trademark of the pub. And the entrance was affixed with half-width saloon doors. It was possible to see the inside of the building from the top and the bottom. In general, the pub looked like a classic wooden house you’d find in a cowboy movie. ⌈2

Tiffania and Ragna pushed the saloon doors open and walked into the pub. Inside the pub, behind the counter, a middle-aged man with extended goatee ⌈3⌋ was standing there, with both palms placed on the counter. The middle-aged man looked at the two with suspicion, they were clearly wearing high quality clothes, what business did they have in this backwater?

Tiffania was frightened by the middle-aged man’s glare, Ragna walked in front of her and said to code words to the middle-aged man, “Give me two bottles of dragon liquor.”

The middle-aged man asked in return, “How strong?”

Ragna immediately followed up with, “As strong as possible.”

After hearing the reply, the middle-aged man nodded once and said, “Alright, come with me.”

With that, Tiffania and Ragna was led to an empty room in the pub. Not long later, the broker entered the room to greet the two. “My, my… what a rare guest, what brings you here today, Your Holiness?”

Obviously, this was not the first time Tiffania had met this broker. In the past, they met on several occasions due to unfortunate circumstances. And now, they have already become acquainted. However, this was the first time Tiffania had actually come to find him personally.

When Tiffania saw the broker, she smiled politely and said, “It’s been a long time Mister Samuel. I have come to find you today with a top secret request.”

“Oh? Pray tell…” When the broker heard the words, top secret, he immediately put on a stern expression. That was because he knew top secret requests normally involves extremely high risks.

When Tiffania saw the broker’s expression, she immediately put on a wry smile and said, “Mister Samuel, you don’t need to be alarmed, I just need you to help me gather information regarding the whereabouts of the princess.”

“Princess? You don’t mean…” When the broker heard Tiffania’s words, he immediately raised an eyebrow.

Tiffania nodded her head dejectedly and said, “That’s right, three days ago, Elwyn suddenly disappeared from her room. I believe the cause to be familiar summoning. If that’s really the case, then the princess should still be fine, but… I fear for the worst…”

After finding out the situation from Tiffania, the broker promised her that he will do everything in his power to gather any information regarding the princess. Tiffania reminded the broker one last time that he mustn’t let any outsiders know the princess of the elven race are currently missing. After that, they bid their farewells and left the pub.

On their way back to the main street, they saw a figure standing at the side of the alley. On top that person’s left hand, that was raised by ninety degrees, there was a crystal ball about the size of a basketball. And his face was covered by a black hood, it was impossible to make out his appearance.

That person looked like a fortuneteller no matter how you looked at him. Even if Tiffania was desperate, she wasn’t desperate enough to cling on to some superstitious stuff. Magic could still be logically explained to some extend, but fortunetelling was completely unsystematic. There’s no way to verify whether the fortunetelling was accurate or not.

Moreover, there’s also a lot of frauds. Therefore, Tiffania didn’t pay any attention to that fortuneteller and walked past that guy. However, just when she walked past him, the fortuneteller suddenly said, “The light you’re seeking for is at the place where five stars aligned.”

“What…?” When Tiffania heard the fortuneteller, she turned back and asked in suspicion, “What are you talking about?”

Ragna could sense a strange vibe coming from the fortuneteller, he raised his guard and whispered to Tiffania, “Master, it is best if we just ignore him.”

Tiffania shook her head and continued to ask, “Where is the place where five stars aligned?”

The fortuneteller didn’t answer the question directly, he only said, “You should know the place better than anyone here,” before he continued, “However, the light is quickly getting devoured by the darkness.”

Hearing those words, Tiffania’s face immediately turned deathly pale, she started to think of many tragic things happening to Elwyn. The more she thought about it, the paler she got.

Just at this time, Ragna was finally unable to remain silent anymore, “That’s enough! Stop your nonsense at once!” He shouted and threw a punch at the fortuneteller.

However, his punch didn’t connect and hit the thin air. Before anyone knew it, the fortuneteller had already disappeared on the spot. Ragna felt a chill down his spine and tried to turn around immediately, but it was already too late, the fortuneteller had appeared behind him and used his index finger to lightly poke a certain acupuncture point at the back of his neck to paralyze him.

When he was sure that Ragna’s movements had been sealed, the fortuneteller looked at Tiffania calmly and said, “It matters not whether you believe me or not, the wheel of fate is beginning to turn once more, and it can no longer be stopped.”

After saying all he had to say, the fortuneteller disappeared in the blink of an eye, leaving only Tiffania and the paralyzed Ragna behind on the empty street.

Only until a long time later did Ragna finally regain his freedom of movements, and only now did Tifannia finally regain her composure. She whispered to herself, “The place where five stars aligned, the light getting devoured by darkness… I need to hurry! Elwyn is in trouble!”

Chapter 74
Need a hand?

Chu Shen sat up in bed. “Awwwnnn.” His mouth opened wide as he let out a big yawn and stretched. Looking over he saw Lucas still slumped over in the chair from when he shut down earlier.

Getting up he poked Lucas in the shoulder. He jolted upwards, just like a real human that had been startled awake. ‘The wake-up cycle must be very short.’

Mentioning this to Lucas he quickly shot down Chu Shen’s idea. What he did was not a complete shut-down, more like a power saver mode that induced sleep, so there was never a wake-up cycle.

Chu Shen ate breakfast and very swiftly they left to hunt for some more animals. This time they upgraded to a class 4 beast. Now it was more of a challenge.

This beast was called Scorching Horned Rabbit. Like the Shadow Fox it was weaker than most other class 4 beasts because of its nature. However it was still aggressive and could shoot fireballs and cover itself in a fire Qi body shield.

Lucas and Chu Shen started hunting and found the Scorching Horned Rabbit.
It was a rabbit with a horn on its head ending in a lethal point. They used the same method as the Shadow Fox with Chu Shen distracting the rabbit and Lucas attacking it from behind.

When Chu Shen stepped out the rabbit perked up and looked up at him. A red colored Qi covered the rabbit’s skin. It’s horn also glowed a bright red instead of its pure white from before. It studied Chu Shen for a second. Chu Shen waved his hand in a hello gesture.

Upon the signal Lucas charged out to kill the rabbit. It had started to run towards Chu Shen whenever it must have sensed Lucas. Swinging its head backwards a fireball formed at the tip of its horn and shot towards Lucas.

Not expecting this move, Lucas wasn’t able to dodge it. When the fireball impacted Lucas it burnt through his clothes and left a small burn mark on his synthetic skin.

Bang

Of course since his skin was fake, even though it looked completely real, it wouldn’t burn. However, when the fireball hit him it also made a small explosion, launching him backwards into a tree.

It immediately jumped towards Chu Shen with its horn pointed forward, an ominous red glow gathering on its horn. He jumped sideways to dodge the charge. Chu Shen, not giving the rabbit time to launch its fireball, immediately used his crossbow.

Hisss

It streaked through the air and hit the rabbit in its flank, though its body shield blocked it with a flare of red energy. It still succeeded in knocking the rabbit backwards.

Chu Shen immediately charged forwards swinging his hammer with both hands in an overhand swing. The rabbit jumped upwards, over his swing. It started to form a fireball on its horn but luckily his hammer was still in its weightless form.

Chu Shen swung his hammer upwards and smacked it in the chest. The blow immediately broke its body shield and flung the poor rabbit upwards. This strike dealt heavy damage to the rabbit but not a lethal one.

Lucas had by now gotten up, his face twisted in anger. “I don’t care if you are peter cottontail. But if you hit me with a fireball, you’re dead rabbit!” Immediately he activated the plasma welder and ran up to the rabbit. Waiting for it to land, he immediately slashed at it, cutting it’s head off.

Chu Shen nodded. There was no hesitation at all in killing animals now. Going onwards they killed about fifty of the rabbits before noon. If it wasn’t for Lucas’ tracking system, they never would have found the rabbits.

With it, they could hunt large number of rabbits unlike those poor hunters who had to depend upon tracking or luck to bag a beast like this. Using his storage ring, Chu Shen came back to town for lunch.

Afterwards they sold the corpses of the bunnies at several different stores, at each one they only sold ten. With that people would be less suspicious. Since the Scorching Horned Bunny was a class 4 beast he received slightly more more at a silver and 20 coppers, with 100 coppers being equal to a silver.

With this they now had sixty silver added with the six silver left over from dinner and breakfast. Finally Chu Shen thought it was time to visit the local blacksmith. He brought Lucas inside who just wandered around looking at the various items.

He himself browsed the shelves but he didn’t find what he was looking for. Going up the counter he called out to the cashier. “Uh excuse me. Could you help me find some metal ore?”

The cashier looked at him blankly. “Uh, you do realize kid that this is a blacksmith shop? We sell weapons not metal.”

Chu Shen grinned sheepishly. “Okay, can you tell me where I can get some then?”

The cashier shook her head. “Fine. There is some over in the Four Materials Shop, it specializes in selling materials to crafters so there should be some over there.”

Chu Shen nodded and immediately headed over to the Four Materials Shop. Inside there was several sections separated by symbols. There was an ink bottle and pen, a hammer, a sword, and a plant. Obviously the symbols meant inscriptions, smithing, cultivating resources, and alchemists respectively.

Chu Shen immediately headed to the smithing section. Inside there was a list of ores with samples in front of each label. There was also purity listed as well going from one star to five star.

He browsed the different types of ore before finding the best ones at a three star purity. It was called black iron, durable but cheap at 1 silver for two pounds. There was also Lightning Steel, steel that was saturated with lightning Qi at forty silver a pound.

Calculating in his head, Lucas helped him make some suggestions as well. Finally they decided. Eight pounds of black iron and one pound of lightning steel totalling forty four silver, bringing their total down to twenty two silver.

As for what to do now, Chu Shen had no idea. Going up to the counter he decided to ask the employee. “Um, excuse me. I wanted to buy some metal, how can I do that exactly?”

“Okay kid, tell me the amount, purity, and name of the material and I will bring it out for you. Then you can inspect and pay for it here.” Chu Shen nodded.

“Alright, can I have eight pounds of black iron and one pound of lightning steel at three star purity.”

“Give me a moment and I will be right out.” Soon she was back out with a package. A small square of silver metal was inside and a slightly large square of black metal.

Chu Shen frowned. Obviously black iron was heavy, resulting in this low amount of black iron. Deciding immediately it would not be enough, he bought another ten pounds, bringing his money down to 17 silver.

Leaving the shop Lucas and Chu Shen left immediately for the hotel. Once there he brought out the fabber. It was time to replace Lucas’ leg.

Lucas grinned. “Well I might not need a hand, but can you give me a leg?”

“……..”

Chapter 73
Money

Lucas and Chu Shen landed after a little over fifteen minutes of flight. Lucas used his cybernetic eyes to scan for a nearby town which was almost thirty miles away. They got close before landing so that they could avoid being spotted.

They also wrapped a strip of torn cloth around Lucas’ leg and Chu Shen chopped a tree branch in the shape of a walking stick for him using a short sword from his spatial ring.

Soon they got into town. After exploring for a bit Chu Shen made a judgement. This realm was almost exactly his own, except for minor differences in technique.

Chu Shen had discussed with Lucas exactly what they were going to do when they got into town. However things did not go like Chu Shen planned for them too…………

It was to be expected honestly, Chu Shen should have seen this coming. Their original plan called for them to rent a room and buy some metal. With that Lucas could make a crude prosthetic using the fabber.

However Chu Shen forgot something very important which I am sure you know by now.

Money.

Yep, money. Who actually believes there is a universal currency much less inter-dimensional currency? Maybe the currency that can be traded with everyone would be goods but Chu Shen didn’t have any.

Of course he was an artificer but he only had inscription ink and some beast cores. He also had some scrap weapons but no one wanted them. This was a pretty nice town and to sell something that only a low level apprentice could make was apparently a pipe dream.

So Chu Shen and Lucas finally gave up. Now both of them were sitting down next to the stone wall that surrounded the city.

“So Chu Shen, do we have a plan as to what we should do next?” Lucas asked.

Chu Shen sighed. “Earning money is hard. But we might be able to hunt some of the beasts around here.”

Lucas got up. “Alright let’s go then, come on!” He enthusiastically cheered Chu Shen on. Sighing once more Chu Shen got up.

“Fine, I heard there are class 3 beasts on the south side of the village. A class 3 beast is comparable to a Dragon Stage cultivator so we should be able to earn some money quickly. It’s starting to get dark out so we should hurry.”

They immediately set out for the south side.

Once there they encountered their first class 3 beast, which was actually familiar with Chu Shen. Surrounding the beast stealthily Chu Shen whispered to Lucas the information he knew about this beast.

“Lucas, this is a class 3 beast called Shadow Fox. From what I remember from my world it can cloak itself in shadow making it invisible. It’s also fast and aggressive but will run away if it realizes its in danger.”

Lucas grinned. “Alright then. I don’t have a combat HUD exactly but I do have a tracking program meant for analysis in the lab. It should be a piece of cake.” His hand split apart and changed to become a plasma welder.

Chu Shen shook his head. Well, it was time to see exactly how Lucas kept up with him. Taking his living steel hammer he recalled the fact that he still hadn’t upgraded it yet. Grimacing he took out the crossbow that he had also neglected to update.

Then they attacked.

Chu Shen came out first, simply walking out and standing in front of the fox. The fox immediately perked up and looked at him. Suddenly it vanished, seeming to meld with the long shadows cast by the descending sun.

Lucas quickly appeared behind the fox, so fast it was a blur to Chu Shen even with only one leg. The plasma welder lit up a bright blue, slashing at a seemingly empty spot in the grass.

Yelp

The fox immediately cried out in pain as its back was struck with searing hot plasma, ripping through the fox’s spine. Lucas winced as well, seeing the plot of the animal.

Shaking his head he looked away from the fox while Chu Shen came up with the short sword and stabbed the disabled fox in the back of its neck. It’s pelt was worth some money along with the beast core though not very much.

Lucas looked at Chu Shen for a second but looked away again. “Ugh. That was awful. I mean, how could you kill a poor beast like that. It wasn’t doing anything wrong.” None of his previous enthusiasm was apparent.

Chu Shen looked at him strangely. “It’s simple, we need the money to get food and a place to sleep. Besides, did you forget about that man who tried to kill us for being in the wrong place?”

“Life is cheap here. Try your best to survive otherwise you may just be left behind, buried under a nameless tombstone.” Chu Shen left Lucas with those cold words and left to find more foxes. Those were actually words that his father had told him before when he was training.

Using his hammer he swiftly and efficiently crushed the heads of the foxes, avoiding the chest where the beast core was located. Without Lucas to spot the foxes sneaking ability it became harder however not impossible.

The foxes could not get past his body shield though, as the ability to coat the body in Qi was called by cultivators who reach the martial realm. He simply waited until they attacked before swiftly smashing their head in once they revealed themselves.

Foxes, compared to other level 3 beasts were not very strong. Not to mention that Lucas was a very advanced cyborg while Chu Shen was a martial student. Comparing their power levels to the foxes, they truly were like normal beasts that were being sent to the slaughter.

Eventually Lucas came back and joined him in hunting the foxes, though he was still slightly squeamish. Seemingly to apologize for his previous breakdown he vigorously hunted down the foxes with him.

Soon there was over twenty foxes that had been slain. Gathering them all Chu Shen left the beast cores inside the foxes since it might damage it’s fur to remove it. Better to leave it to the experts.

The two most expensive things on the fox was it’s fur, which was a pretty black and orange color, along with it’s beast core. Bringing it back, Chu Shen was able to find a small shop that bought the foxes, giving him a silver for each fox. Counting it up he nodded.

A room at the inn costs ten silver and a meal costs two. With it, they could have a nice rest. Together, Lucas and Chu Shen headed for the nearby inn and rented a room to share. While Chu Shen ate a small dinner, Lucas went up to the room to power down.

After all, Lucas was a cyborg and only needed power though he could enjoy food. Chu Shen on the other hand needed food to survive. Considering their small amount of money, Lucas decided to forego eating for now.

[Arc 3] Chapter 72

Chapter 72
Ah! My Leg!

Chu Shen and Lucas appeared suddenly on a beautiful mountain with other mountains surrounding it. While the mountain was large and greenery abounded everywhere, they were at the very top where only desolate rock was around until you went further down the mountain.

Directly in front of them was a man in dire straits. He wore a robe that though tattered exuded the appearance of nobility. It had holes and burn marks on it, revealing the tarnished metal armor underneath.

The man was facing away from them, looking down the mountain side. “I finally lost them. Thank God, I can finally rest now……” He suddenly stiffened as though he sensed something.

Turning around he saw Chu Shen and Lucas staring at him.

“………”

“……..”

“He doesn’t seem that scary Chu Shen.” Lucas spoke up, breaking the awkward silence. Immediately like a cat that had its tail stepped on, the man jumped backwards, floating in the air.

“I don’t know how you got here without me finding out, but you will never get the Yin-Yang gloves.” Immediately a black glove appeared around his right hand and a white glove around his left hand.

He punched his two fists together and as they drew apart a Yin-Yang symbol in the shape of a ball appeared growing bigger and bigger.

Chu Shen immediately recognized the danger. “Lucas, get away, NOW!” Circulating his qi, a shield appeared in the air between them. It was circular and had chinese script on it.

Lucas didn’t react very fast. At least, not until his HUD lit up with warnings of a massive power surge. Immediately he activated his shields and tried to run away.

“Hey hey! Why are you trying to kill us all of a sudden! We were just out going for a walk and suddenly you attack us! What gives!” Lucas yelled out.

“Hah! Like I would believe such gilded words! Take the first cycle of yin-yang you scum!” The man yelled.

Chu Shen manipulated the shield to be in between Lucas and the man. He himself released a gray energy around him, coating himself in Qi like all those in the martial realm can do.

The man released the yin-yang ball which by now was twice the size of a man. The ball flew forward and hit the shield Chu Shen constructed. It passed through without even slowing down, though it did reduce in size slightly.

The ball quickly flew towards Lucas. As he saw it coming he tried to dodge by jumping into the air but unfortunately this ball was as fast as lightning! It hit Lucas destroying his forcefield and incinerating his leg.

The man frowned at this. If they were truly trying to capture him then they would have brought someone more powerful. “Why would they seek me out with such weak strength.” He murmured. Then he saw something that stunned him.

Lucas fell to the ground and grabbed at his stump of a leg. “Ahhh! You b*stard! Do you know how long it’s going to take to make a new leg huh! Not to mention I don’t even know if I can make a new one in these conditions!”

Sparks came out of his leg and bits of metal dangled out of it. The man’s jaw dropped at the sigh. Pointing at Lucas’ leg he stuttered. “W-wh-what the hell is that!”

Lucas got up and started hopping to keep his balance. “This! This is my leg you bstard! You can’t even recognize what you chopped off?! Bstard!”

Chu Shen on the other hand was trying to sneak around the mountain to Lucas. Seeing his chance since the man was stunned, he ran up to Lucas and grabbed him.

He hauled Lucas behind him, making Lucas flutter in the wind looking like a kite. Turning over his shoulder he yelled at the man while he ran. “Sorry for scaring you! Hope you don’t take offense!”

Turning to Lucas, Chu Shen asked a question. “Hey Lucas, you have any flight systems?”

Lucas’ eyes immediately lit up. “Of course I do. Man I should have thought of that. Hey Chu Shen, put me down.”

Meanwhile the man was flustered. It seemed like these kids were truly just taking a walk when he tried to kill them. He thought it might have been one of those greedy cultivators disguising themselves to make him hesitate.

He sighed.

He had been chased for over a week by greed cultivators trying to steal the Yin-Yang gloves, which left him kind of jumpy. Now that he was thinking clearly, he could sense the energy in these kids dantians. They weren’t a threat, they were barely even close to his level. ‘I was definitely in the wrong.’

After Lucas was set down he leaned on Chu Shen for support. Out of his back emerged a gray cylinder with a blunt tapered end facing towards the ground. Lucas grabbed Chu Shen tight. “Hey man, hold on okay, I’m about to take off!”

Chu Shen nodded. “Alright Lucas, let’s go.”

Immediately a whine was heard slowly powering up the flight system. A blue glow appeared underneath the cylinders bottom. While they were prepping for take-off the man still stood there stunned.

Finally he called out to them. “Sorry about the mix-up! If you ever pass by Wildent then go to the Black Night Sect and show them this. I will make up for this.” He threw a small token at Chu Shen who caught it out of reflex.

The man became covered in a white colored energy and flew up into the air, away from direction he was looking at when they first saw him. Chu Shen grinned. “Alright, we will!”

Suddenly Lucas shot up into the air. “AHHHHHH.” Chu Shen yelled out as he flew upwards. His cheeks were flapping from the wind making him look like a fish gasping for breath. Covering himself Qi, he counteracted the windsheer.

Lucas started yelling over the sound of air whistling past his ear.“OH YEAH, WE’RE TAKING OFF!”

“I HATE YOU LUUUUCAAAAAAASSSSSSS!!!!!!”

“HAHAHAHAHA”

Chapter 11 – Tomb of the Unliving Part IV

“<Possession: Lucifer’s Soul>!”

A black flash covered the room. In the place of the human, there should only be a hole in the ground, nothing else remained. That was what the feijiang had expected.

But that wasn’t what he saw. As the smoke began to clear, a figure could clearly be seen through the smoke. The figure was not the same as that of the human before though. Not fully. Large feathered wings the colour of the night extended out from his back, two grey horns grew out from his head. His clothes were in tatters, allowing one to see the runes that seemed to cover his entire body. The entirety of his body was now covered in a dark aura.

“Phew. I can’t believed I was forced into this,” David remarked. With no other choice, he decided to utilise more of Lucifer’s powers to nullify the <Shadow Eradication> sent at him. Although he succeeded, he wasn’t happy about it. After all, this allowed Lucifer to read his thoughts far easier.

“Heh, instead of getting annoyed, you should probably focus on the battle,” Lucifer laughed.

Ignoring Lucifer’s comment, David turned back to the battlefield. The mezuki, gozuki, and manticore seemed to be ready to attack at any time. The feijiang was glaring at him with a surprised look on its face.

“Surprised?” David chuckled.

Hearing that, the feijiang indicated with its right hand for two undead, as well as the manticore around David to attack. The gozuki was the first to attack. It charged towards David like a mindless bull, raising its hammer high up in the air. The manticore flap its wings and rised high up in the air, before taking a dive towards David.

As the hammer smashed down, David focused his mana, causing the black aura around him to thicken. Instead of crushing him, the hammer did not seem to be able to bypass the aura, The gozuki placed more strength into the hammer, but it didn’t seem to have any effect on the aura surrounding David.

David wasn’t even paying attention to the gozuki. Instead he wrapped his blades in the same aura that surrounded his body, then slashed at the manticore coming down at him.

The blade cleanly sliced through the manticore’s stomach. Blood gushed out and splattered over David and the gozuki.

“One down. Three to go,” David muttered.

The mezuki tried to use this chance to put down David, thrusting its halberd out towards his abdomen. Having noticed this, David used the blade in his left hand to parry it, and utilising the motion, he stabbed forward with his other blade. It penetrated the mezuki’s shoulder.

Instead of retreating, the mezuki moved forward, allowing the blade to penetrate into the flesh more. It was determined to hold its enemy in place so that the gozuki could finish him off. The pain in its shoulder was trivial compared to the success of the elimination of the target.

David wasn’t flushed by this at all. Letting go of his blades, he turned around, and did a roundhouse kick on mezuki’s head, knocking it to the side. A ‘crack’ could be heard as parts of the mezuki’s skeleton shattered upon impact. The effects of <Possession> depended upon the powers of the user’s soul. Lucifer’s Soul seemed to increase his physical capabilities further and also granted him a greater mana pool to use.

The mezuki stumbled backwards. Not missing this opportunity, David quickly leaped towards the mezuki with the aid of his wings, and brought his blade down. It sliced cleanly through the neck of the mezuki, beheading it instantly. Blood spurt forth as the body dropped onto the cold floor.

Seeing two of its servants fell, questions began to fill the feijiang’s mind. At first glance, the human before it did not seem to be anything special. In fact, making it here was already enough to raise suspicion about that person’s identity, but the feijiang had disregarded this earlier suspicion after seeing the human’s struggle. Yet, the being in front of him did not seem like a human any longer. It was something far more, nearly resemblance to a demon, yet not being a demon. It was enough to cause the feijiang to actually fear for its own immortal life.

It decided then, instead of watching its servants fight, it would enter the fray. Perhaps through a combination of <Shadow Eradication>, <Darkness Falling> and <Eradicate Life>, the enemy before it would…

But it didn’t even get a chance to finish the thought. It was surrounded by a firestorm. It tried to assemble some form of defence, and tried to cast several advanced and saint ranked water magic to nullify the firestorm surrounding it. <Hydraulic Aegis> and <Tidal Embrace> did not seem to weaken the power of the firestorm. It desperately casted the monarch ranked <Oceanic Typhoon>, but even that had no effect.

Seeing this, the gozuki rushed to the feijiang’s side and started pouring its mana into an attempt to extinguish the firestorm. It was a futile attempt. Instead, the gozuki began to heat up and became engulfed in the expanding firestorm.

The firestorm burned quickly and wildly. The flames seared everything in its surroundings. Some of the flames came close to David, but it didn’t burn him at all. The aura of darkness protected him. As he watched the flames flicker, he let out a sigh, “It’s finally over.”

“Well done. You have performed splendidly,” Lucifer congratulated him.

“Did it all go according to your plan?” David commented, while breaking free of the <Possession>.

“Well, you did defeat all of the undead here. So good job. Now…” Lucifer paused for a moment, as if considering something. “Time to get out of here.”

David walked towards the large metal door that he used to enter the room.

“Not that way. Use <Portal> to get above ground, then leave quickly.”

“Lucifer, is something wrong? <Portal>” Despite being confused about Lucifer’s sudden request, David still listened to it, reasoning that Lucifer must have had a reason to do so.

Casting <Portal> David visualised the place where he entered the entrance of the tomb.

“So, what was it? David asked.

“Exorcists. Right now, you’re not in any condition to deal with them.”

“Would they really attack? I just did their job for them… Unless its because of you?”

“Better safe than sorry right? And these exorcists seemed to radiate a celestial light.”

A loud explosion was heard, startling the three of them. They rushed along the corridor. The trail of bodies seemed never-ending. Every step they took, the ground was covered with puddles of blood, and flood of corpses, it seemed that stepping on them were unavoidable.

“What was that?” Hikari exclaimed. This mission definitely wasn’t going the way she had expected it to. She had presumed that it’d be a breeze in the park, followed by a few nights where she could relax and go out. Perhaps even hit the clubs or something. Instead they seemed to have been just a step behind a potential threat.

“Not sure, but judging from the sound, it definitely seems like a fight might be going on ahead. We should get going,” Guang replied.

“Wait a minute!” Ordered Lux. “Do you have any idea of what enemy you might face? Do you understand the dangers you’re stepping into? Don’t act so carefree! First of all, the target this time is not a normal feijiang, but one that has risen from the body of a powerful mage. Secondly, a lot of the corpses we have seen all seemed to have a pool of water around it. This indicates the use of water or ice based attacks, neither of them are what is commonly associated with the elimination of undead.

Telling you two to prepare [Divine Revenant] was definitely needed. The possibilities that the one responsible of eliminating the undead being hostile is not low. If they were not, they would have likely be local, and that we would have known about them. The fact that we have no idea of what could be ahead suggests heavily the dangers involved. So now stop acting like idiots and act like the exorcists you’re supposed to be!”

Hikari was surprised. To her, Lux had always been the cool older sister type of person that she admired. She believed that with Lux, anything was possible. For such a person to lose their temper and become worried, just how serious was this situation?

“Yes… Understood…” Guang and Hikari answered. Although Hikari had doubts on her mind, she still obediently apologized.

“Let’s hurry up.”

The three of them ran past several doors, but they ignored it. The explosion hadn’t come from behind one of those doors, but further down the corridor. As they went down further and further, they noticed that the atmosphere had changed. The three of them could feel an intimidating and oppressing aura seeping out from the darkness.

It didn’t take them too long to arrive in front of a large black metal door. Yet when they arrived, the oppressing aura had disappeared. Was it a fragment of their imagination? That would be impossible. It was not possible for three strong-minded exorcists to be influenced so easily. This had to mean they truly felt the aura. What was the source of it? Questions filled Hikari’s head.

Lux slowly pushed open the metal gate. The three of them stepped inside the room. The smell of burnt flesh filled their nostrils. Before them, was death. A dead manticore was lying on the floor with its stomach cut wide open. A mezuki had been decapitated. Near the throne-like chair, a badly burnt corpse could be seen. On the throne itself was a charred skeleton. The flesh on its bones seemed to have burnt away.

The scene in front of them contradicted everything else in the corridor before. It was as if a fire magician had arrived and burnt the two figures to dust. This sort of scene would have only been possible if there was a team that had arrived before them.

“Powerful fire magic as well as weaponry…?” Lux muttered. “This can’t be the act of a single person. But the ice before… I suppose being proficient in both ice and fire magic is unlikely but not impossible… Just what is going on here?”

Guang was also dumbfounded at the scene. In no way did he expect to see a scene like this before him. Masses of undead destroyed, a mezuki slain. Even a manticore, a ferocious beast that could endanger a small village as a cub, dead before his eyes. He had expected the person or group before them to be a rather powerful group, but to have slain such dangerous monsters, and then disappeared before they arrived. It was unthinkable.

Hikari was raking her mind to see what she could think of, but nothing. She didn’t know what to say at all. The mission hadn’t just turned serious. It turned completely dangerous as well. An unknown possible threat was loose onto the city, and they had no clue about it.

“Hikari, Lux. Let’s go. We’ll go and report the situation to the headquarters, then pour our efforts into finding whoever did this. They are far too powerful to be able to walk freely without us having any information on them. We need to understand everything in order to keep the people in this city safe. It is our duty. As followers of the almighty God and his angels. As exorcists.”

Chapter 10 – Tomb of the Unliving Part III

“<Light Sphere>”

Hikari, Lux and Guang descended down the dark stairways. From their research beforehand, they already knew about the entrance to the feijiang’s tomb.

Allowing their <Light Sphere> to illuminate the path before them, they soon found themselves in a long corridor. But something was out of place, corpses were scattered along, and the walls seemed to be smeared with fresh blood.

“What… what happened here? Did the feijiang lure that many people in and killed them?!?!” Exclaimed Hikari immediately upon seeing the sight before them.

Guang and Lux both went forward and gave the corpse in front of them a closer look. Initially it had looked like a normal human’s, but after seeing it up close, one could see that the skin of the corpse was wetter than normal, the neck of it was twisted in an unnatural manner and it had a terrifying facial expression on its face. Seeing that parts of its flesh was rotting away, it could be concluded that this wasn’t a body that had been freshly killed. At least not when it first died.

This was more than likely an unanimated ghoul. However, what was interesting was the cause of death of the ghoul. It had died from various holes across its body, each one spanning a radius of 10 cm. It was impossible to imagine what had been used to kill the ghoul. Seeing as the insides of the holes were still wet, it became clear that these holes were what killed the ghoul the second time.

Normally, in order to kill a ghoul, either light magic or fire magic would have to be used. It was possible to kill it by chopping off its head as well, but ghouls getting killed by penetrating its body is unheard of. After all, they are undead which have a particularly high tolerance for pain, and can move even after taking large amount of damage.

“So, what happened to these poor people?” Hikari asked impatiently. Since she didn’t go for a closer look, she hadn’t realised that the corpse was a ghoul.

“Lux-sama, what do you think happened here?” Guang asked, completely ignoring Hikari right now. He was quite concerned about the scene before him. If this corpse was a ghoul, then it wouldn’t be too surprising to assume that the rest of the corpses were some form of undead as well. “It couldn’t be a local exorcist could it? Even though we didn’t confirm with the local church, there shouldn’t be anyone that is capable of doing this from there either.”

“Hikari. Guang. Prepare your [Divine Revenant]. Although the undead has been eliminated here, we have no idea if it was a friend or a foe that did this. It’s better to be more cautious about this.” Lux commanded. Although experienced, she has never experienced a situation like this before. It wasn’t just the unnatural death of the undead, but the fact that some of the undead were bisected, which is most likely what caused the walls to be sprayed with blood.

“Wait what? What happened? Why are we preparing our [Divine Revenant] all of a sudden?” Hikari was confused. Since she wasn’t paying attention, she didn’t really understand what was going on all of a sudden. Being ordered to prepare her [Divine Revenant] is akin to saying that there is a true monster up ahead.

“The corpses here are undead. All killed in an unnatural manner. What’s more is that the death seems to be rather fresh, so whoever did this probably haven’t left yet, or at least haven’t gone too far away yet,” Lux replied impatiently.

Hikari looked hesitantly at Guang. Sure she admired Lux like every other member of their corp, but she still couldn’t believe that she was being asked to prepare her [Divine Revenant]. Only when she saw that Guang had already started to chant the aria for the spell without hesitation did she comply Lux’s orders.

David was standing before the feijiang, who was also the owner of this tomb. The two of them stared at each other silently, trying to measure each other’s capabilities. It was like one of those games where the first person to blink would lose.

On the side of the feijiang were a mezuki and a gozuki, guarding him as bodyguards would.

In the end, it was the feijiang that gave in first, “Human, what reason do you have to be here, disturbing my domain?”

“I came here to exterminate you,” David replied coldly. “Unless you can give me a reason not to?”

He didn’t give out his actual reason to be in the tomb for three reasons. Firstly, he had a sneaky suspicion that the feijiang in front of him was responsible for the horde of undead rushing at him. Secondly, he didn’t want to expose anything about Lucifer. He may not trust Lucifer fully, but there ought to be a reason why he was told to exterminate the feijiang and the rest of the undead, aside from just training. Thirdly, he needed to place himself in a more favourable position where the enemies would be afraid of him. On one side of the feijiang was a mezuki, and a gozuki stood on the other side. Just from the aura and Lucifer’s earlier warnings, he didn’t think he could achieve victory without using <Possession>. Therefore, he had to buy as much time as possible to come up with a plan, just in case something unexpected happened.

“Exterminate me? You plan to exterminate me? The great me who…” the feijiang stopped there, and began to cough loudly. “The great me who has achieved immortality?! What a joke. Seize this foolish human at once!”

Upon the feijiang’s command. The mezuki and gozuki charged towards David brandishing their weapons. The mezuki swung its halberd around, aiming the tip directly at David, while the gozuki leaped into the air, raising its hammer up high.

In response to this, David jumped backwards, at the same time, conjuring up his blade in his left hand to parry the incoming halberd. He landed just outside of the gozuki’s hammer range as it came crashing down on where he originally stood. If he had reacted a second too late, he would have been smashed into a smear on the floor, unrecognisable by anyone or anything.

Although he had dodged the first attacks of the feijiang’s guards, he wasn’t in any way safe yet. The mezuki and the gozuki took upon an offensive stance and came charging at him once again.

“<Ice Barrier>, <Frost Shell>

A huge wall of ice shot up from the ground, just underneath the feet of the gozuki, knocking it off-balance, while also blocking the path of the mezuki. Seeing the obstacle, the mezuki tried to move around it, but was assaulted by a barrage of that David casted.

While the mezuki was struggling to make an advance towards David, the gozuki got back on its feet. Picking up its hammer, it gave out an earth-shattering roar and glared at David with its eyes full of hatred. Swinging its hammer, it leaped into the air, above the wall of ice, and tried to smash David once again.

This time, David rolled to the side, dodging the gozuki’s attack again. However, this caused him to stop assault on the incoming mezuki, allowing it to charge right at him.

Having been given no time to muster up any manner of defence, David had no choice to take the charge head on, using his blades to guard himself and soften the blow. Even so, he was knocked back several metres. A jolt of pain surged through his forearms, but he gritted his teeth and endured it. Taking this as an opportunity, he took a step backwards.

“<Freezing Icicle>

Just like before, numerous icicles formed beside him. He fired them towards the gozuki and mezuki. Unlike the mindless undead, they did not stand there to be pierced and instead rotated their weapons around to block some of it.

Just as David felt that he was finally safe to go onto the offensive, he instinctively crouched. He saw a stinger swung over his head. Turning around. He saw a manticore behind him. It had snuck up on him while he was fighting the mezuki and gozuki.

“<Freezing Icicle>

David casted <Freezing Icicle> once more. This time, his target was the manticore. <Firestorm Tempest> would have been the more appropriate choice, but in this enclosed environment, he had no way of ensuring that he could avoid his own spell.

Since the manticore was close-by, many of the icicles pierced into the manticore’s body. It let out a large roar and took a leap towards David.

David reacted by once again trying to roll out of the way. But this time he did not manage to remain unscathed. A front paw of the manticore managed to scratch his arm.

Seeing David starting to become more and more cornered. The feijiang laughed maniacally. It started to chant, “Oh glorious dark god. Let loose your wrath upon these foolish mortals. Eradicate the living. Blacken the light. Pierce through every obstacle with your darkness!!”

A huge ball of darkness flew towards David on the floor. The mezuki laughed. The gozuki laughed. The manticore howled. The feijiang laughed.

Chapter 5 – Genius

Knock Knock “Come in the door is open.” an old voice sounded.

“Hello principal, there has been something that happened, that I believe should be brought to your attention. Come in Xing Huang.”

“Hello mister principal.”

“What is the matter here?” the principal sounded.

“Well, the thing is, this is the first time that Xing Huang has gone to school. He has been very sick since he was a child and was not able to leave the house due to his weak body. So he just self-studied from his parent’s old books. Today was his first day at school, and as you know we hold mock trials on the first day to see where all of our students are at. To my surprise, Xing Huang decided to take the exam.”

“What is so surprisi..”

“He got a perfect score within less than 30 minutes of testing. There was no cheating, he had no backpack, no materials, nothing. The pencil he used was provided by us so there is no possible way of cheating.”

“He WHAT!? In less than 30 minutes? And he self learned everything…My god…I’ll make a call to the chairman he will be excited to hear this. It has been so long since we found a true genius. For now, make sure that his tuition is all waived, all books, materials, everything will be paid for. On top of that, the school will give him an allowance of 500 gold coins every month. Okay, you can leave now.”

“Thank you sir.”

It was quite surprising, Xing Huang didn’t expect so much from the school. All he wanted was the tuition waiver to help his parents not worry about the school fees. But it seemed that once you start you had to go all the way, go big or go home. The school must have a strong backer for them to so easily expend such a big amount of money.

Though what Xing Huang didn’t know, was, the amount of money just now was just a drop of water in the ocean to the school.

Even though Xing Huang wanted to help his parents out by getting that waiver; extra money was not bad either. He wanted to help his parents but he wasn’t dumb. There was something fishy going on and no man in his right man would ask nothing further and just dish out money. It was either the school was super rich, or they had another alternative. Perhaps this “alternative” would lead him to what he wanted to find, the hidden cultivators in this world.

Slide ‘Hey look he’s back. I wonder if something happened?’

“Okay class, we have our class president. This year’s class president will be Xing Huang, with his perfect score on the exam, he has received the tuition waiver as well as the principal’s blessings. Please give him a round of applause.” Miss Mei announced.

No one clapped, not even Meili. Everyone was in shock. Either the newcomer was an unparalleled genius or he miraculously cheated with some divine help. But since the latter was impossible, they could only sit in awe at the new genius that had just joined their class.

“I object. Miss Mei, he clearly cheated. How can a person like him get a perfect score? He hasn’t even gone to school. Besides, what can he learn from textbooks, he probably made it all up as a cover up for his dirty work.” Wang Chao Rebutted.

“Wang Chao,Xing Huang did not cheat. Actually, I was paying more attention to him more than anyone else earlier because I was afraid he wouldn’t be able to finish and would need to stop. He brought nothing with him so it is clear that he did not cheat. Either way, the principal has acknowledged this as a fair exam and has also gone to discuss Xing Huang’s future with the chairman.”

Wang Chao was speechless. He just thought that the principal had merely agreed and had only planned to so out of giving face for Miss Mei and would investigate this poor kid’s background. He never thought that the principal would take it as far as to go and inform the chairman. It looked like his plan of buying the principal out wasn’t going to work out.

Though what our little friend didn’t know was that the principal really didn’t need the money, what he needed was a genius like Xing Huang. Even if he did cheat, then he had some amazing technique to have done so with nothing but himself, the test given, and a school administered pencil.

Looks like Wang Chao finally learned that money was not everything. But it didn’t seem like it would end there.

[Arc 3] Chapter 71

Arc 3 [The Black Rose]

Chapter 71

No Charms?!

Chu Shen appeared inside the Heavenly Treasure Pavilion exactly where he left off at. Looking around nothing had changed. A small gasp sounded behind him. Spinning around what he saw stunned him.

Lucas was looking around with a shocked expression on his face. “What the heck just happened?!!”

‘Great you brat. Now this mortal is inside the Heavenly Treasure Pavilion. What to do, what to do.’

Chu Shen shook his head as master Ti Wu remarked sarcastically in his head. “Lucas, listen okay? I can explain everything.”

Lucas immediately focused on him, a desperate look on his face. “Alright, i’m listening.”

“It’s like this, I am from a different dimension. In this dimension the strong are prey to the weak. People can control energy with their souls and strengthen their body beyond belief. My mom was captured because of me being too weak so I must get strong to rescue her.”

“I accidentally hitched a ride on this object that travels to different dimensions which is why I ended up in yours. The bracelet I gave you teleports whoever wears it into this place. As for where we will end up I don’t know.”

At least that was the gist of what he said. Lucas constantly interrupted him with questions about this and that. He cried with him after he talked about his mother being kidnapped and laughed in joy after finding out his parents were safe.

After a while Lucas just sat there, trying to absorb everything that he had just been told. Finally he got up.

“Alright Chu Shen, since you have that bracelet thing I should be able to at least go back right.” Chu Shen started to nod at that before he suddenly froze.

“Whats with that face? I can go back right?” Lucas asked worried.

Chu Shen looked at him sheepishly for a second. “Ah, well about that……. I never really used the charm. “

“……….”

“………”

“WHAT!! I CAN’T GO BACK!!!! Agh, my life is over, overrr!!!” Lucas crumpled up in a ball in despair.

Chu Shen hurriedly went over to comfort Lucas. “Hold on, it’s not that bad! In five years the Heavenly Treasure Pavilion should come back to your dimension. All you have to do is wear the bracelet and survive until then.”

“Yeah, not that bad.” Lucas said sarcasm dripping from his voice. He leaned back and looked up at the ceiling in a wistful look. “I bet Xentus is going out of his mind trying to find us.”

He sighed, remembering his adoptive father. Chu Shen sighed as well, recalling the kindness Xentus showed him.

After a while, Lucas got up. “In order to survive I need a couple things. I need a power source, I am a cyborg after all.”

Chu Shen nodded. “Alright, can you open up your parts? I think I might know a way.”

Lucas’ took off his shirt. Underneath his skin split before sliding to the side, revealing the intricate machinery underneath. Chu Shen looked at it before he pulled out a beast core from his spatial ring.

Unplugging a wire from one of the power cells he had Lucas lay down on the floor. Pulling out an inscription tablet used to practice inscriptions he got busy.

Using some inscription ink meant for the [Channeling Inscription] he quickly modified it to transfer Qi between the beast core and the wire.

The reason he chose this beast core was because it was from the land eel, a lightning type beast. Unlike cultivators beasts have innate elemental powers but they can’t unleash its full potential until they also unblock their meridians.

The modified inscription flashed gold before the inscription ink turned into ash. Sighing Chu Shen tried again. After twenty or so tries the inscription flashed gold and the inscription ink turned golden as well.

Chu Shen wiped sweat from his brow. Truly, modifying inscriptions, even the most simple ones, was very taxing on the mind. This entire time he had already explained to Lucas what he was trying to do. Understanding, Lucas merely watched him, his eyes flashing with curiosity.

Preparing himself he put the wire on the receiving end of the inscription and the beast core on the other. Inputting Qi, he activated the inscription. Silver blue energy coursed through the inscription where it was absorbed into the wire.

Lucas, who was watching his internal HUD, showed a shocked face. He was at about 81% power but now there was an increase in .1%! While this may not seem big, his powercell could power him for over ten years in normal usage and nine months in constant combat.

With this, he didn’t have to worry about recharging. Lucas immediately communicated this to Chu Shen. Both of them rejoiced in this newfound idea.

“So I know this whole thing about being strong is very big in your dimension. But can I really be killed so easily?” Lucas had a hard time believing that.

“Imagine if someone can destroy a city with a wave of his hand, if you offended him he might kill you over something as simple as looking at him the wrong way.” Chu Shen explained quite clearly the rules of his dimension.

“Most places are ruled by a dominant organization with important people being in charge of cities. Face, or pride, is very important to these proud people so if you offend them they might kill or cripple you to regain their pride.”

Lucas thought for a little bit before realizing, this was like corrupt officials in his own dimension! If you offended a wealthy businessman they could bribe a judge to put you in jail. In a world where human life is not as precious as his own, then instead of jail time it would be his life that was bought.

As Chu Shen put up the now drained beast core, a translucent barrier appeared around him and Lucas. The entire place started crumbling with the stones whistling through the air, creating a loud ruckus.

“IS THIS THE TELEPORTATION EFFECT YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT CHU SHEN?!”  Lucas yelled.

“YES IT IS. IT SHOULD BE OVER SOON.” He yelled back.

As the pagodas formed like last time, Lucas stared openmouthed in awe at the wondrous sight. The gray vortex appeared around them.

Then they disappeared.
