Demon Sword Maiden Chapter 1159

New Chapter!
My hair is starting to reach the stage where the fringe is starting to overhang my glasses instead of just resting on top of them…
This means I will need to go and get it cut properly soon.
That requires an investment of effort on my behalf, woe is my life…
I’d have to wake up at reasonable hours, walk into town, sit and wait, then interact with humans, then exchange currency… the bane of an insomniac NEET.

Anyway, how are your days going?

“Hmph! Do not lump me in with such toys. My skeleton is made of orichalcum, my brain is powered by a philosopher’s stone, and my heart is a dragon gem. In theory, my body is that of a perfect maid who can operate indefinitely without maintenance.”

Orichalcum—the legendary metal, now almost a myth.

Its binding power seemed effective, as Igoronak struggled desperately but remained subdued.

In front of my astonished eyes, I caught sight of Coppelia’s white apron drifting down. The earlier impact had loosened it, and now it floated down gently, finally settling on the quicksand. The lightness of its fabric kept it from sinking, and it spun and danced on the surface like a falling leaf. The whole scene felt surreal, like something out of a dream.

“Dragon Gem release! Thirty seconds until critical mass! Clara, escape now while you can!”

With her shout, a red light began to swirl from Coppelia’s heart, expanding outward in a spinning, ever-growing radius.

Shocked back to my senses, I took a step or two forward and reached toward her.

“Wait! How do you plan to escape yourself!?”
“Yeah, you heap of scrap metal, get out of there already!”

Eren cried out beside me, her face twisted with desperation.

But I knew the answer, even before I asked.

Coppelia looked straight at us with an innocent smile, unclouded by any doubt.

“I am sorry, but the Dimension-Shattering Bomb, the Ultimate Arcane Armament, is designed to be self-destructive. There was never a way for me to survive this.”
“What?!”

She smiled brightly at my speechless reaction and continued.

“You are right, you know. I was the source of it all, the beginning of this tragedy. I got so caught up in my dream that I neglected the world beneath my feet. This is my fault. And I have to end it myself if I am to atone for that sin. I am truly sorry, Clara… no, Jill.”

The red light expanded rapidly, reaching nearly to where we stood.

From within its center, Igoronak writhed, struggling to release black flames and miasma, but all of it disintegrated at the edges of the light. Meanwhile, Coppelia, who was clinging to him, bore the full brunt of the impact, and her maid uniform had already been torn to shreds.

“Jill, now is our chance. I’m not sure about the details, but we need to retreat from here so we don’t waste her sacrifice!”
“But…”

As I hesitated, Luke gripped my right hand tightly, his face full of urgency.

“Let’s go, Lady Jill. We’ve got to honor that dummaid’s efforts.”

Eren, wiping her nose against the back of her hand, resolutely took hold of my left hand.

Pulled by the two of them, I turned around one last time to look back at Coppelia—or rather, Dr. Victor—but all I could see through the red light was a blurred silhouette. Yet, somehow, I sensed a smile on that face, a smile of someone who had fulfilled their purpose.

“—Let’s go. Vier, I know it’s a lot, but please carry everyone.”
“Woof—!”

With a resounding bark of acknowledgment, Vier swiftly leaped, carrying us on her back, and bounded over to the stunned Lieselotte and the others, effortlessly picking them up one by one with her mouth and placing them on her back.

“Whoa—!”
“Wh-what is this!?”
“This is Vier, my familiar! Hold on tight so you don’t fall off!”

Lieselotte looked stunned, while Viola laughed gleefully. Sensing their reactions, I called out to them quickly, urging Vier to get us out of there.

“Woof!”

With a mighty flap of her wings, Vier glided away, carrying us safely beyond the range of the red glow.

♦♢♦♢

Just as I’d been told, the Ultimate Arcane Armament’s area of effect was a hemispherical shape with a radius of about five hundred mertes—though it resembled a flattened dumpling, with the elevation slightly lower in the upper regions.

From above, I could see red light covering the area below, where fierce lightning struck down like torrential rain. It’s terrifying to think that we could have been right underneath that if we had been any slower.

Once we were at a safe distance, about two hundred mertes away from the edge of the blast radius, Vier landed within the forest. I patted her back in thanks and led the way as we dismounted, with Eren, Luke, Lieselotte, Viola, and then Cestlavie following suit.

Even though it was past midnight, the sky above us was painted crimson, as if under an eerie twilight. Luke glanced up at the sky and spoke with urgency.

“So, did we manage to defeat the No-Life King?”
“…I’m not sure.”

In truth, I had little idea of what was going on. All I could sense, with my ability to use Sky magic, was that the space and time around that area had become completely distorted.

“All we can do now is trust that junk of a maid…” Looking at the sky, glowing like a surreal sunset, I could only offer those few words.

Luke then asked hesitantly, “Was she… well, was she a friend of yours, Jill?”

“Who knows…” My time with Coppelia had been brief, filled with action, and complicated by the fact that she possessed two personalities—each with its own quirks, to say the least. If I really thought about it, it’s hard to say that I saw her in a purely positive light…

—“Ah, Lady Clara, so you have finally given your humanity. Congratulations!”
—“Oh, you are sharp! This is a special fragrant tea made from surplus Batacutilius used in experiments.”
—“Exactly! Professor Victor Francis, the genius sorcerer and extraordinary alchemist,”
—“Hmph! Well, I am a magnanimous person. I will never forgive Igoronak for taking my life, but as for your apology… well, you could consider it accepted.”
—“Do you think you could ever understand the struggles of a man who, no matter how much he tries or what he accomplishes, is completely ignored by women!?”
—“What is this, Clara? Who is the fancy-looking lad? Is he your new boyfriend?”
—“I am truly sorry, Clara… no, Jill.”

All these brief memories with Coppelia suddenly surfaced, filling my chest. Now that I thought about it, this was probably the first time I had been present at the death of someone close to me.

Maybe… I should cry.

Just as I felt the tears rising—

Whooosh! With a whistling sound, a rocket punch shot out from the crimson light.

“ “ “ “ “ “What—?!” ” ” ” ” ”

Looking closer, I saw that the rocket punch was holding Coppelia’s severed head in both hands, with her mouth gripping her apron.

In a daze, I watched as the hands carefully placed the head on the ground, flipped the apron inside out, and with a loud thud, a full body—Coppelia’s, minus the head—dropped out. It appeared that her apron was actually a kind of spatial storage bag…

The hands then deftly set her head onto the new body, adjusting her arms back in place. Coppelia’s once-lifeless face blinked repeatedly as though she had just been revived, turned to focus on my face, and gave me a cheerful V-sign.

“Memory transfer to the sub-body is complete. All systems confirmed to be operational.”

“What the…?”
“ “ “ “ “ “What is that supposed to mean?!” ” ” ” ” ”

Needless to say, we all immediately shouted as if demanding our emotions be returned!

“What do you mean, ‘What is that’? The master’s memory reached satisfaction and vanished, so authority returned to me. It seemed like things were getting pretty bad, so I escaped with what parts I could. And here I am, back and reporting for duty. Oh, and this body doesn’t have a self-destruct function—instead, it comes with an incredible Oppai Beam.”

Coppelia saluted crisply.

Despite how bizarre this situation was, I couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

“Ah… hahahahahaha!”

I clutched my stomach, unable to stop laughing.

Levelmaker Chapter 359

New Chapter!
After more than four volumes, the protagonists of the Mephilad and Yggdrasil arcs finally meet.

When this is posted (or the day before, to be precise) it’s been a year since I started translating this web-novel. Before I knew it, it’s been 250 new chapters (plus several side stories) and 79 retranslated ones.

I started translating with two goals: 1. Provide a translation that is as true to the original as possible, 2. Make it enjoyable to read. I feel like I moved away somewhat from the first goal to improve the second, so I’m not sure if it got better or worse over that year.
I think my grasp on the language improved, though not nearly as much as I’d have liked it to. I still find myself using DeepL frequently as a second opinion on sentences that feel weird/wrong, and, embarrassingly enough, it still makes me realize errors in my own version often enough.

I feel comfortable with the current six chapters per week, so I’ll likely keep it that way. Although I’m still planning to translate the two light novels the series got before it was apparently axed, so I might run this in parallel at some point.

The Activation of the Self-Destruct Mechanism and Parting Words (Part 1)

A cracking sound pierced the air as though space itself had fractured.

“Uoooohhhhhhhhhh!!!”

With a roar so malevolent it shook my soul to its core, Igoronak stood upright, raising his single arm. In an instant, the gravity field created by my “Moonfall” spell, which had barely managed to hold him in check, was shattered from within.

“Kyaaaahhh!!”

The backlash from the spell being broken—what’s often called “reverse wind” in terms of hexes—sent me hurtling backward. In that instant, Luke caught me in his arms.

“Ugh—!”

Unable to keep his balance, he nearly toppled over with me, but Vier braced herself and stopped us both from rolling away like a bowling ball.

“Thank you, Luke, Vier.”
“No problem… wait, Jill, you’re bleeding!”

As soon as he said it, I noticed the warm, slippery sensation trailing down my cheek wasn’t sweat but blood, trickling from near my temple.

“It’s just the backlash from the spell. It’ll heal if I put saliva on it,” I replied, wiping it away with the back of my hand and managing a defiant grin. Honestly, getting off this lightly was sheer luck—I could have easily been killed.

“That’s reckless…! Wait, Jill—don’t tell me, you can’t use any more healing magic right now, can you?!”

I couldn’t help but smile at Luke’s sharp insight, even as worry shadowed his face.

“You have to run! I’ll buy you as much time as I can. If you ride with Vier, you’ll get far enough away—”

I gently placed a finger on Luke’s lips to silence him, feeling a faint tremor beneath my fingertip.

It was natural for him to tremble. Even for me, standing in the presence of Igoronak, the No-Life King, was enough to make me feel like vomiting from sheer stress. Imagine the terror it would instill in a thirteen-year-old boy. Yet, there he was, refusing to flee and willing to hold the line to give me a chance to escape. In my eyes, that bravery shone as brightly as any hero’s.

And at that moment, I understood. A true ‘hero’ isn’t defined by wielding extraordinary powers or being chosen by a holy sword. It’s someone who stands firm in the face of fear, never giving in, even when all seems lost.

The darkness of despair clouding my heart lifted, and I pressed my knees to the ground, pushing myself to stand tall.

“Don’t say such cold-hearted things. Besides, even if I managed to escape by sacrificing you, do you really think I’d be satisfied with that? Could you bear it if the roles were reversed?”

Luke’s face twisted as though he were suppressing some inner pain. “But even so… I just want you to survive, Jill.”

“I appreciate the sentiment, but it looks like we’re out of time.”

Following my gaze, Luke and the others turned sharply, looking down into the crater with alarmed expressions.

“…The charade is over. In return for the entertainment you’ve given me, I’ll rip off your limbs and hang you as ornaments in my lair, Saintess.”

With a grinding voice like stone, Igoronak declared his intention, his eyes gleaming with a sickly smile. He took a step forward—

“Hm?”

Suddenly, he paused, his expression shifting to one of surprise as he looked down at his feet.

♦♢♦♢

As Jill and Luke exchanged what could only be described as cringe-inducing sweet nothings, Cestlavie watched them with a deep frown.

“What’s wrong? Jealous, are you?” teased Lieselotte, with a knowing smirk. “If you don’t jump in and take Jill’s hand now, it may be too late.”

Cestlavie scoffed, giving a mocking smile. “Ridiculous. They’ve recklessly thrown themselves into the curse field of the No-Life King. At this point, with seconds left on the clock, there’s no time for romantic nonsense.”

“Sometimes, it’s precisely at the brink of death that the drive to survive… or even to, say, leave something behind, emerges,” Lieselotte replied with a wry grin. “Truth be told, I can’t help but think of someone dear to me who’s far away.”

Despite her composed demeanor, cold sweat dripped down Lieselotte’s back as she trembled slightly. It was the same for the others. Their faces betrayed the inner turmoil of small boats caught in a storm.

“That makes Jill seem lucky, doesn’t it? If only… if only we could at least save those two,” Viola said, offering a smile that belied the pained look she sent in Jill and Luke’s direction.

Cestlavie, observing all this with an expression that screamed baffled and annoyed, drew Lieselotte’s attention. Seeking to distract herself, she shrugged lightly and spoke.

“Not happy about it?”
“It’s just foolish. Devotion might sound noble, but in the end, they’re saving no one. It’s just self-indulgence. If I were them, I’d take the chance to escape while I could. Anything is better than going down together. Really, what a waste.”

Lieselotte and Viola exchanged glances, then both gave an understanding, motherly smile—as if they were humoring a child who simply didn’t understand. Cestlavie noticed, and interpreting it as an insult, glared at them with a sharp, thorny gaze.

“What’s so funny?”
“Nothing, nothing funny at all. In fact, your opinion is perfectly reasonable,” Viola replied. “But…”
“But what?”
“I just realized… you’ve never truly loved anyone, have you?”
“Huh?”

“You’ve never felt like that one person is everything to you, so much so that a world without them is unimaginable,” Viola said, gazing at Cestlavie with a look of deep pity and sorrow. Beside her, Lieselotte nodded in agreement.

For a moment, something about their words struck a chord, but Cestlavie quickly brushed it off, denying their sentiment outright.

“Ridiculous. The most important thing to any living being is themselves. Indulging in fantasies like, ‘You’re my sun, my moon, my everything,’ is nothing but a temporary lapse in sanity.”

At his blunt response, Lieselotte met his gaze with sincerity.

“Perhaps it is a fantasy… but living in that fantasy is what makes us human, wouldn’t you say? To deny that feels rather hollow. And, for the record, someone truly precious isn’t ‘everything.’ They’re what lies beyond this world.”
“…I don’t understand what you’re saying.”
“I expected as much. I suppose I can’t put this feeling into words very well, either.”

Lieselotte shook her head with a gentle smile, as though explaining something to a stubborn younger brother. Cestlavie, unwilling to engage further, averted his gaze, his face set in a hardened expression as he stared resolutely ahead, as if to block out the surrounding noise.

♦♢♦♢

Igoronak, now free, suddenly froze in place.

Curious, I looked closer and noticed that the ground, hardened under the high gravity field, had shattered into fine particles. Due to the terrain, these particles had formed a sudden quicksand-like pit right at the base, trapping Igoronak up to his knees.

“Hmph… a mere inconvenience.”

For Igoronak, who could levitate, it should have been meaningless.

Just as he prepared to leap from his position, now buried up to his waist, a small figure that had somehow sneaked up on him grappled him from behind, holding him down.

“Well done, Clara! The preparations are complete! Dimension-Shattering Bomb is Active… Igoronak, this is where it all ends—you shall die here with me!”

The petite maid with crimson hair—actually the alchemist Dr. Victor’s duplicate personality within the artificial body of Coppelia—spoke without the slightest hesitation as she tightened her grip even further.

“Victor’s puppet…? You insignificant toy!”

Igoronak moved to throw her off, but before he could, Coppelia’s chest split open like a pair of hinged doors, revealing golden rib-like structures. They sprang forth, clamping down on Igoronak like a bear trap.

“Grr…Orichalcum?!”

At his irritated growl, I recalled a conversation I had when I first met Coppelia.
