Kana can’t help but to acknowledge that her mother’s artistic sense are far superior than hers.

The new cover only have the word “Hyouka” painted on top right corner with a brush and a flower that’s either a Japanese rose or a tree peony sketched with a brush too.

In the new cover, the top right corner has the word “Hyouka” written with a brush, bottom left is drawn a flower that might either be a Japanese rose or tree peony, drawn with a brush too. Simple and subtle, yet aesthetically amongst the best.

Ako was not only responsible for he design of the cover, but also the typesetting and all other designing work needed in the book. Kana only wrote the novel in the end and it was ready.

Eru have a piano lesson during the weekend, thereupon, the responsibility of printing “Hyouka” fell on Kana.
Obviously, Kana can’t go out alone, so in the end, she can only ask Ako to drive her to look for a printing shop.
The weather wasn’t the best. The clouds were hanging low as if it was about to rain. Kana didn’t want to go out at all.

Eru intentionally left Kana and her mom alone together. Of course, this small intention didn’t get slip Kana either. Kana didn’t like this woman. However, not wanting to disappoint her sister, she can only bear with it for now.

“This is quite artistic,” Kana said while lying down in the compact car’s back row, holding a tablet while scrolling through the anthology Ako designed. She gave her very subjective comments as she scrolled.

In the field of the arts, Ako can completely obliterate Kana. As she hear Kana’s word, she immediately haughtily said, “Do you even know what beauty is? You rarely read fashion magazine, there’s no way you can develop a shut-in sense of aesthetic either. What’s more unfortunate is that you are also a girl. Just look at yourself, you can’t even pair your clothes.”

Kana looked down at her own outfit, it was a one-piece dress plus a pair of jeans… nn, nothing wrong.

“What a noisy aunty,” Kana curled up her mouth.

Ako grind her teeth. This girl can roast someone at the drop of a hat, both her temperament and mouth are as vile.
She’s a world apart from the clever and thoughtful second daughter. She can’t help but to rub her own belly. This kid was ultimately born out of her, a disaster of her own making…

Ako sighed and asked, “which printing shop do you want to go to?”

Kana lowered her head and thought for a long, long time, and finally came up with an answer, “I don’t know.”

“Ha?” Ako almost let go of the steering wheel, “you don’t know? Why did you think for so long if you don’t know?”

“I don’t go out, how would I know what printing shops are out there?” Kana rightfully reasoned.

“Alright,” Ako kneaded her own forehead, “there’s a small printing shop near Kaburaya Middle School. It is a company that the city hall cooperate with, so we go there.”

“Doesn’t sound like good enough reason,” Kana nodded, “nevertheless, let’s take a look.”

Ako didn’t feel like retorting, but it was just an anthology for a club that was about to be scrapped, why would she need to be picky about the printing shop?

Around 20 minutes later, they reached the aforementioned shop.

The shop, although wasn’t big, has been relied on by the city hall for printing documents, advertisements, handbooks, and such, so it has a pretty comfortable business. Ako was currently a popular city council member, and the manager of the shop deferred her. Not only that he gave her 30% discount, but also promised that the job will be completed within the day.

Ako asked Kana the number of copies she would like to print. Kana scribbled something, and then decided to print 2,000 copies. Ako’s lip twitched, as if she wanted to say something, however, she followed her instruction and ordered 2,000 copies.

When the order was complete, the day had gone entirely dark. The printing shop’s employees helped load the still-warm books into the trunk. After the trunk was full, the remaining books were loaded onto the back seat row.

Ako thought that Kana won’t be able to lie down because of the books. However, Kana took off her shoes, put her legs on the books, and then lie down. Ako unwittingly cursed. This girl is lazy beyond reason.

Right when Ako decided to drive home, suddenly her phone rang. Ako received the call, and smiled warmly, “Ah, Satou-san… Nn, I have time… alright, no problem.”

Ako hung up, and give a businessman’s smile, saying, “We will stop by Taiko bar on the way home.”

This sentence elicited Kana’s response.

Kana crooked her head and said, “On the way? Taiko bar isn’t on the way home.”

Ako drove while explaining to her, “Satou-san, Kamiyama city travel agency’s bureau chief, have drank some. He can’t drive, so he asked me to take him home.”

“Oh, I see, hehe…” Kana chuckled, squinted, talking peculiarly1.

Ako knew that such explanation won’t satisfy Kana who had intelligence outside the human realm, but is there even a way to explain the messy world of bureaucracy clearly?

Ako sighed and said, “do you know Eru’s book, “Tigers’ Adventure”?”

Kana snorted at her.

“I have a proposal to develop regional specialty cultural tourism based on “Adventure Tigers”,” Ako continued, “This proposal can’t go ahead without the support of travel agencies, so I can’t go on the bad side of Satou-san.”

Kana snorted again, meaning unclear.

When they arrived at the Taiko bar, the rain has finally started to fall. Moreover, it was also big rain, accompanied with thunder. Kana distractedly thought, summer was coming.

A man wearing a black suit entered the car, beer belly, big, a standard greasy middle-aged man.

“Bureau Chief Satou, good evening,” Ako greeted him.

“Evening, Ako. Sorry to be a bother. Who is this?” Satou asked. Smell of alcohol assaulted Kana immediately, causing her to instinctively knitted her brows.

“This is my daughter, Kana,” introduced Ako.

“I heard that you have a smart and beautiful daughter, turns out that they weren’t exaggerating it,” said Satou. Even though he was speaking about Kana, his little eyes were instead eying on Ako’s collarbone and chest.

Kana sighed loudly, internally considering a response.

Despite Kana’s presence, Satou-san was getting excited regardless, and apparently, Ako also used this opportunity to finalize some deals with the beer-addled bureaucrat. After the car started, they conversed vigorously, and Kana was completely ignored, being treated like the thin air.

Kana’s smile turned colder with every passing moment.

“About the tourism proposal, I would naturally offer you a lot of my support…” Satou’s smile twitched, his fat finger approached Ako’s skirt. Ako also feigned ignorance to this behavior.

“Then your support would be very appreciated. Where do you live, sir?”

“Shiga Inn.”

“Haha, sir, you really like to joke.2

“Haha…A!”

A shiny white light streak across like a meteor, and a rectangle object smashed his head. He screamed, covering his forehead.

The object fell on the gear lever, and it was Kana’s tablet. Kana had ferociously smash his head with the tablet’s metal corner. The assault had drawn blood, red blood seeped out from between his fingers.

“Satou-san…” Ako was disoriented. She wanted to care for his injury, but she stared angrily at Kana, shouted, “What are you doing! Kana!”

Kana stared back at her without hesitation, eyes wide, “So you a̲s̲s̲h̲o̲l̲e̲ still remembers that I’m here, you b̲i̲t̲c̲h̲!”
The way Kana called her pierced into her heart, she was temporarily shocked.

“This, this savage, so is this your daughter…” Satou shiveringly pointed at Kana with his other hand, asking Ako.

“Mister, you are the savage! So you f̲u̲c̲k̲e̲r̲ still wanna fight?” Kana produced a baton out of who knows where, the baton crackled and connected to Satou’s thigh, causing him to convulse.

Ako wanted to stop her daughter’s deadly action, but she still had to drive the steering wheel.

Suddenly, an ear-piercing noise assaulted them, the small car veered to the left, and violently stopped.

Satou saw a chance. He opened the door and staggered out of the car. Although, because of the electric shock, half of his body was numbed, so he tumbled on the ground for a few times in the rain.

The car’s left tire was stuck in a drainage ditch, and the undercarriage was stuck on the curb. The car can’t be moved.

Ako stood in the middle of the rain, staring at her own car.

Kana also disembarked the car, turning around and walked away.

“Kana, where are you going?” Ako shouted.

“Do you care!”

“You piece of s̲h̲i̲t̲, wait for me!”

“Just go rock that car with that Chief of yours, you unfaithful b̲i̲t̲c̲h̲!3

Footnotes:

  1. This may be missed by western readers, but this is one method to show disapproval without saying it, while also deriding the other person, but also don’t confront the person about it. It is really uncomfortable to be on the receiving side of it, if you are self-aware.
  2. Shiga inn can also mean “congratulation for the ambition”.
  3. TL Note: Yes, there’s a lot of swearing in this chapter. In fact, after this chapter, the daughter will call her mom b̲i̲t̲c̲h̲ and the mom will in turn call her daughter little piece of s̲h̲i̲t̲/piece of s̲h̲i̲t̲. You don’t get to know because this website automatically censor expletive, but it isn’t like I disagree with it. Just know that if you see b̲i̲t̲c̲h̲ or piece of s̲h̲i̲t̲, it’s their way of calling each other from this chapter on.
