One of the things I like about the setting for Frieren is that the mages in it don’t sit about twiddling their thumbs when it comes to researching spells.
A spell that the 4 strongest people in the world were completely unable to defend against 80 years ago gets reduced to the level of generic attack magic after it’s researched, and countermeasures are developed and improved. There’s a sense of progress and development for magic instead of everyone just trying to reclaim past glory like you see in other settings.

This chapter is one of the first ones to really highlight how entrenched this novel is with the author’s other works and their RPG.
Beware, the wiki is a rabbit hole, and with spoilers.
The character design art on there though is absolute fire.
Some really great work from the artist.
