I was known as Logohas Gis Tostromik. I was given the rank of Knight Captain by the king of the sacred Elven kingdom of Viridis. Even though I was the Knight Captain, I was not the strongest among the knights.
The reality was that some of them were much better than me in terms of status alone. However, I also possessed strength equal to that of an A Grade. Considering my family background, it was no surprise that I’d been chosen for the role.
The Gis Family had been tasked with protecting the royal family for decades. In fact, I’d been waiting for the king to promote me to Knight Captain.
After I became Knight Captain, the world was peaceful for a while. However, as time passed, our brethren living outside the Tree of Spirits reported that the power of the forest had begun to weaken.
After dispatching my troops to have a look, I’d concluded that the forest was indeed losing its vitality and that its force was dwindling. According to information passed down only to the upper echelon, including the high-ranking families, there was actually a spirit residing in the Tree of Spirits.
Using this spirit, we Elves, a wise nation, had managed the forests and the land of the Viridis Kingdom. However, our king became concerned about our relationship with the Beastmen after learning that the spirit’s power was waning.
Due to the original pact with the spirit, we’d gotten around to managing its power and received many of its benefits. However, now with the spirit’s power weakening, there was a growing fear that the Beastmen might do something to interfere.
As such, the king dispatched all of his knights to various places across the kingdom to begin gathering forces for the upcoming war against the Beastmen.

Just as we anticipated, the Beastmen noticed that our blessings were beginning to weaken and thus started the conflicts, which only spread far and wide. It was then that a report came stating that a higher Elf had been found.
Higher elves were said to be so powerful that their status matched those of the heroes born by humans. As such, if we could bring that Elf in, they’d become a near-perfect asset for the war.
Moreover, the fact that a higher Elf had appeared would boost morale on our side.
After gauging the Elf’s strength through the Collegium Venato and discovering that they were indeed an Ancient Elf, we summoned her to the Tree of Spirits. However, the girl that eventually showed up turned out to be arrogant and insolent1.
She did not kneel before the king, boldly proclaiming that she was equal to him. Even though we’d been notified of this matter in advance, I knew that I and many others were displeased by this.
It was absurd to think that a mere outsider could be considered on the same level as the king. Was this girl even that strong to begin with? Was the existence of the higher Elves really true, and not just some fairy tale?
If it came to fighting the Beastmen, would we actually be able to entrust our lives to her? Like anyone would trust their safety to a young girl boasting about being an Ancient Elf.
While she could be used to boost the people’s morale, she did not belong on the front lines. Besides, if she did end up surviving by some stroke of luck, she’d just end up stealing all of the credit.
As such, I’d planned to make it clear which one of us was superior. Yet the king had forbidden me from doing so. I decided to go to the room of the so-called Ancient Elf on my own accord after the meeting.
Although the king hadn’t given me his permission, I didn’t really need it since I, as the Knight Captain, held more than enough power to not need permission2. Being strong meant that the only permission I needed to act was my own.
I entered the room assigned to the girl and approached her before she could see me. Then I stabbed her in the back with a dagger. If she truly was the Ancient Elf she proclaimed to be, then she should’ve seen my surprise attack from miles away.
The mere fact that she couldn’t do so made me think that this so-called Ancient Elf was nothing but a farce. In the end, we’d lose nothing more than one Elf who’d fooled the king due to being blinded by greed.
And now, my dagger was buried in the heart of this self-proclaimed Ancient Elf. All this meant that she was not in fact an Ancient Elf, but an ordinary young girl.
“This is what you get for trying to impersonate an Ancient Elf.” Just as I said that, a loud laughter burst out.
“Ahahahahaha.”
The maniacal laughter echoed from the bleeding corpse below.
Suddenly, the corpse’s head turned, and its face was looking straight at me. Its eyes were lifeless and creepy, almost as if they were peeking into my very mind. Its mouth twisted in a sinister smile couldn’t have been any more unsettling.
“Hahaha. You’re the one that started this, so don’t go complaining if I kill you! I have to say, your meat looks quite delicious.”
A sudden voice echoed, and in the next moment, the corpse shot forth, biting me on the neck. Its jaws were like that of a beast, chewing through my skin, flesh, and even bone.
I tried to shake it off and run away, but I couldn’t move, almost as if I’d been drugged with a paralyzing poison.
As warm blood flowed down from my neck, my body grew cold. There was no way this thing could be an Elf, it had to be some kind of monster! Even though I tried to convince myself that there was no way I could lose to a monster, my voice still leaked out in a pathetic manner.
While I lost sensation in my body, the monster bit into my right arm. I was completely consumed by fear, so I couldn’t even realize that I was being eaten alive. The monster then attacked my left arm, left leg, and then right leg.
After it had consumed all four of my limbs, the monster looked down at me and opened its mouth wide. Just as its face was about to swallow me whole, my vision went blank3.
◇◇◇
When I came back to my senses, I was in a hallway. I hurriedly looked at both my hands to find that they were intact. Both my legs were fine too. There wasn’t even a scratch on my neck.
(Did I really fall asleep in a place like this4?)
Just as relief was beginning to settle into me, I heard the same crazy laughter coming from the door in front of me. The sensation of being eaten alive quickly filled my body, and I left as fast as I could.

- Robinxen: Personally I think most of the issue was on their side for just assuming it would bend over and obey…
- Robinxen: Who is being arrogant and insolent again?
- Robinxen: That’s uh… dark…
