“And what exactly do you expect me, an Ancient Elf, to do for you by calling me here?”
“So you were indeed an Ancient Elf.”
“Oh, my? It seems like you weren’t all that certain.”

I said, slightly amused. I’d suspected they already knew, but perhaps the distinction between High Elves and Ancient Elves wasn’t all that obvious to the current Elves.

This meant that I likely could’ve kept it a secret if I hadn’t blurted it out just now. Or likely not. To them, a High Elf or an Ancient Elf made little difference—both were high-ranking elves with their own uses.

It was also possible the king knew all along and just wanted to test me. Rather, it was more likely, given the king’s poker face.

“You asked what we wanted from you, correct? It’s simple. We need you to vanguard our fight against the Beastmen.”
“So you were indeed fighting with the Beastmen.”
“It’s common knowledge now. Even the children are aware of it.”
“Unfortunately, I’m not from this kingdom1.”

I replied, letting that statement explain my unfamiliarity. Back in town, I hadn’t heard a word about the Beastmen, and although I had my suspicions, I hadn’t been able to confirm them.

Besides, I’d avoided asking mainly because I was trying to avoid drawing unnecessary attention. Not that it had mattered; I’d end up standing out regardless due to my natural elven features!

It had likely all started with that gatekeeper. He had probably informed his superiors of the genius archer Finis without actually dismissing it as a child’s stupidity. Otherwise, there was no way the king would know that we had crossed the forest.

“Your Majesty, may I speak?”
“I’ll allow it. Speak.”
“With all due respect, I am opposed to having her take the lead. She doesn’t seem to possess sufficient strength.”

One of the knights, seemingly the highest-ranked one, shared his view with the king.

(Is he like a captain or something?)

I wasn’t too sure about the knight’s rank, but that didn’t matter. Primarily because his status was on par with that of a lower A Grade adventurer and wasn’t anything noteworthy.

This led me to think that maybe being in command here wasn’t so much dictated by strength as it was by inherited status. Either way, his tone hinted that he didn’t want me in the spotlight—or maybe he just wanted to challenge me.

Typically, in situations like this, someone would suggest a demonstration, and after some effort, they’d eventually exclaim something along the lines of, “H-How is she so strong?!”

This sort of development was common, though inconvenient for me at the moment.

That was because I’d have to be tested again while already being tested to boot! They were testing me even though they already knew who I was. I had already cleared an A Grade mission, hadn’t I?

Since I didn’t want to be tested again, I could also wipe out the royal family and take my sweet time searching through the tree since I already knew that the spirit was here.

It was said that even Buddha had his limits, so it wouldn’t be wrong for me as a Demigod to get angry. However, whether I was to get angry or not all depended on the king.

“We would be honoured to see a demonstration of your abilities.” The knight said, leading in the standard scenario.

A typical protagonist would gladly take this on and show a grand display of skill or cleverly win them over, but I was way too annoyed to bother. So I responded in a different manner.

“In that case, I’ll be leaving.”
“Wait! You must not value your life to leave the king’s presence unannounced!”
“Why are we going over this again? You’re going on about how you want to see my abilities, but I’ve already done so at the Collegium2, haven’t I? Isn’t that why you even bothered to bring me here?”
“T-That’s…”

The knight, whom I now assumed was the captain3, was left speechless, grinding his teeth in frustration. His face reddened, visibly flustered. It struck me that, unlike the nobles, knights seemed less skilled at masking their emotions.

Honestly, it actually made me feel good seeing such an expression in real life. With this in mind, I wanted to see how the king would act now.

“Captain, stand down. I understand what you are trying to say, but I do not allow it.”
“Yes, Your Majesty. Please accept my apologies.”
“I request your forgiveness on behalf of my kingdom’s Captain.”
“Please be more careful next time. I may be patient, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have limits.”

The Knight Captain begrudgingly bowed his head and moved aside. The king deciding to forbid the fight not to displease me actually had me kind of intrigued, which is why I had decided to stir things up a bit.

After all, a king was lower in the ranking than a Demigod, so it only felt right that I messed with them a bit due to the disrespect they’d shown me.

“Let’s dismiss this meeting for today. I have prepared a room for you. You can use it to rest up and recover from today’s journey.” The king announced, dismissing us from the room.

The atmosphere was tense, but the king’s dismissal brought a refreshing sense of closure to the day. I had half-expected him to express some displeasure, but he showed none. Perhaps this was a testament to his composure—or simply his audacity.

After everything, we were escorted directly to the floor above, where both Lullus4 and I were shown to one of the many rooms.

  1. Robinxen: Infiltration is not her speciality at all is it…
  2. Robinxen: Colphne is this you?!
  3. Silva: “hello I’m a caption”
Robinxen: Darn it! I noticed that error when I read ahead a few days ago and I was looking forward to correcting it but you beat me too it Silva! But yes, this originally said that he was the caption not the captain, and it got a good chuckle out of me.
  4. Robinxen: My brain tried to change the spelling of this to Lilian and I have no clue why.
