“An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” is often misinterpreted these days to be something savage, and sometimes followed by “and the world ends up blind,” or something to that effect. While some older cultures interpreted it in such a literal fashion, its intent and original fashioning was around the concept of the punishment not exceeding the crime – something that most modern legal systems follow.
