For poison tasting, if I had to guess. Apparently, the food is passed through several people for this, so it gets cold as a result. We can’t pretend like it’s not our problem either, since we are practically the princess of Central in terms of status.
Still, I do have some countermeasures for poisons. Referencing how we handled the drugged meal back in Royal Capital Estoque, I’ve made it so only things safe to ingest can pass through Ciel’s mouth.
To begin with, Ciel shouldn’t die of poisoning while she’s yet to be 15 years old, and by the time she turns 15, her body would probably be different than that of normal people, so there’s no telling if poison would even affect her.
Princess Leshimiiya glanced at our plate with a slight look of disappointment, but I pretended not to see it and replied, 「My sympathies.」
I don’t plan on having the Oh, yours look so delicious food exchange with other people before I do with Ciel.
「Umm, back at the place you came from…」
「You mean Central? We can touch that topic normally, you know.」
「I see. Then once again, back at your home in Central, what kinds of food do you commonly eat?」
「Monster meat is common there. There is a den nearby, after all.」
「A den, is it? I’ve heard about it before; have you ever been inside it, Miss Ailneige?」
「I’ve been there before. Low-rank hunters populate the shallow stratum, so it’s quite safe. However, it’s not completely devoid of danger.」
Even weaker monsters can be deadly if you’re not vigilant enough, and there’s no telling when a high-rank irregular could suddenly appear, like that nightmare creature. That’s not a den-exclusive situation either.
「If I recall correctly, a very strong monster has previously invaded from outside of the den, did it not?」
「That’s right. Apparently, many died back then, and those who survived even questioned how they were saved.」
「I suppose there’s no true safe place in a place filled with monsters.」
「Though even behind concrete walls, safety can never be assured either.」
If an S-rank monster were to appear, walls can only stall for time at best, and more than anything, you wouldn’t necessarily be safe from humans either.
You could get assassinated, poisoned, or threatened with authority; Princess Leshimiiya should be familiar with some of these situations, should she not?
「That reminds me, earlier we were asked what the most important factor when using sorcery is, but what do you think, Miss Ailneige?」
「Magic power capacity, circulation, and control—I consider them equally important.」
「It’s no wonder, then.」
「When it comes to protecting your own life, in particular, everything is important. If you train your fundamentals to the extreme, you will be able to sense magic power other than your own, and you can even deploy sorcery undetected.」
In the middle of my speech, I deployed a soundproof barrier enclosing me, the princess, and Rynaetra. Of course, it’s thoroughly concealed as well, so only individuals on Munyechka’s level should be able to sense it.
Currently, the only other people who might notice it are those who can no longer hear the surrounding noise outside the enclosure, such as Princess Leshimiiya and Rynaetra.
「… To be able to do this much.」
「It appeared as if you wanted some privacy, you see? Was it unnecessary?」
「No, I appreciate it. As such, Ryna, calm your bloodlust.」
「… My apologies.」
I’ve noticed her piercing glare, but since she isn’t particularly a threat, I didn’t really care for it. It was probably more of an intimidation than actual ill intent. Still, if she does act up, I suppose it’s the princess who’d be troubled.
Personally, it would probably be better if the princess shared my true identity if she trusts her enough, but perhaps the princess is still judging her character? I feel like they must have first met each other in person here in the academy, so the chance of that being the case is probably high.
In that case, I should refrain from meddling with their issue.
「Well then, what do you wish to talk about?」
「Just to confirm, Miss Ailneige, do you know the black-haired, masked girl?」
「I see. How do I describe it? We do have some relation.」
She’s me, so I really don’t know how I should answer this.
It was a quite vague response, but Princess Leshimiiya seems to be satisfied by it, so it’s all good. That reminds me, have I actually ever told her that Ailneige and Ainsel have a connection?
「Then will it be alright to discuss that?」
「Do you mean the stampede?」
Now then, I wonder how much of the stampede’s information has been disseminated.
Since there wasn’t any observable public response, the information must have been strictly controlled, or she might have actually kept the incident a secret. But from her tone, it seems like it isn’t the latter. Since we were able to enter Royal Capital Ausente without any issues and our identity as Cielmer has already been exposed, making the stampede public should no longer be an issue.
Still, since she went out of her way to bring this up, did they find the culprit or something?
「First, I would like to apologize—」
「No need for that. Doing so would only cause issues, and you do understand why you were asked for secrecy back then, correct?」
「But still…」
「More importantly, please continue. It will seem unnatural if our voices remain unheard for too long.」
There shouldn’t be anyone in eavesdropping range to begin with, but you can never be too sure.
「I understand. We have found and captured the organization that triggered the stampede.」
「That’s excellent news.」
「However, we have yet to trace back to the people who orchestrated it from the dark.」
「But you do have prime suspects, no?」
「Please take care when interacting with Marquis Elbert’s kin. 」
「Understood. Thank you for the warning.」
「No, I’m the one who should thank you.」
If I recall correctly, Marquis Elbert should be the de facto leader of the anti-Central faction here.
In that case, I can somewhat understand the reasoning for targeting Princess Leshimiiya, but why did they decide to attack her with a stampede?
Even without having to resort to such a dangerous method, couldn’t they have gone about it in a different way? Maybe not.
But still, this Marquis Elbert might bear a grudge against us, so I’ll make sure to have my guard up.
And that ends this half of the chapter! Man, the fear/displeasure against Fii seems to have no borders, considering that there’s an anti-Fii faction even here. I guess Central is just that desirable.
Princess Leshy being disappointed about Ain having the same food as her is so funny. I guess she really wants to try as many of the cafeteria’s food as possible. Also, Ain actively using her barrier during casual moments is objectively so scary on the receiving end. Suddenly not hearing the surrounding noise is not exactly how I’d like to learn that this enigmatic being I’m speaking with has the ability to isolate you from the world at any instant. You’re stressing her out, Ain. I thought you sympathized with characters in stressful positions, Ain. Don’t give her too much stress, Ain!
Now then, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice day~!
