“The divisions within your tribe sound like your own internal problem,” the girl said bluntly.

“…Maybe you’re right,” Lordsey admitted after a pause, “but it’s not something I alone can change. As for you—your fate is to become a sacrifice for the Dark Faction. They’re quite intrigued by adventurers from another world.”

“…”

“You don’t seem afraid.”

After all, this was just a game. No matter how strange the events, there wasn’t much reason to panic.

The girl’s real name was Yoyo, and her in-game name was a playful twist on it: YoyoPink.

This was her first time playing a full-dive VR game, and without question, she had become completely enchanted—drawn in by its immersive world and the joy of exploration.

Right after leaving the Beginner Village, she had eagerly changed class to Summoner and rushed out of town, excited to try out her new skills.

And then… She somehow ended up getting kidnapped by goblins and dragged all the way back to their camp.

“You’re so strong—why do you obey the Dark Faction?” Yoyo didn’t answer his earlier comment. Instead, she asked a question of her own. She could see his stats—and Lordsey was, without a doubt, the strongest monster she had encountered so far. The first Epic-tier boss.

“You really think that?” Lordsey’s voice trembled slightly.

“Of course! You’re the strongest person I’ve met in this whole world!” She nodded solemnly, her tone sincere.

“Haha… I never thought a human would acknowledge my strength,” Lordsey chuckled bitterly. “But… it doesn’t change your fate. In the eyes of the true powers, I’m nothing but cannon fodder.” With that, he turned and walked out of the tent.

Time to head back to the city and give Shiu the gold. Return scrolls are reasonably priced—only 1 silver coin each. Wait… isn’t that 30 RMB when converted? Reasonably priced, my a̲s̲s̲!

Still, he’d already bought it—might as well use it now or it’d be a waste.

Zane crushed the scroll, and the scenery before him and Starry rapidly shifted. In a flash, they were back in Wynwater City.

“Shiu! I’m back in town—where you at?”
“Coming, coming!”

Three minutes later, a dusty-looking Mage arrived in a hurry, holding a blue staff. His ID read “BesideStillWaters,” which had to be Shiu.

“Wow, Shiu—what a flashy username,” Zane teased mercilessly.
“All yours, mister Emberveil,” Shiu fired back with a smirk.
“…Touche.”
“Anyway, stop stalling—fork over the goods!”

Zane handed over 35 gold coins, keeping 3 for himself.

“How are you planning to sell them?”
“How else? Just throw them up on the auction house. The game has an official gold consignment system—you just have to link your bank account.”
“Seriously? It’s that easy?”
“Yeah, what did you think? With how many people are playing this game, of course they made it convenient.”

“Shiu, you wanna come level with me?” Zane asked.
“Not today—I already made plans with my party. Tomorrow, though—have your goddess carry me.”
“Deal. I’m off, then.”
“Later~”

“Stardust! Over here!” Endless Sea shouted the moment he saw Starry.

Zane, still in wolf form, carried Starry over to him.

Endless Sea had already reached Level 13—his leveling efficiency was quite impressive.

“Whoa! Just one day and you’ve already got a pet! By the way, where’s Emberveil?”

Starry silently glanced at the gray wolf. “Right here.”

“…?” Endless Sea curiously inspected the wolf’s status.

Gray Wolf (Emberveil)
Level 16
HP 1,960
Attack 130–133 (10%)
Defense 57
Skills Call for Reinforcements, Rapid Stride, Venomous Claws, Gray Wolf’s Soul, Bone Shield
Description A promising young wolf highly regarded by the Gray Wolf Alpha.

“What the—these attributes are insane! That pet has better stats than me across the board?! And five skills?? And wait—this name… Hold up, Emberveil, you turned into a beast?!” Endless Sea exclaimed in shock.

“You’re the beast!” Zane snapped as he deactivated his Gray Wolf form. Since it was just them around, it was safe to do so.

“Yikes! The wolf transformed into a person!”

“Shut it!”

“So this is… a hidden skill?” Endless Sea asked.

“Yeah, discovered it by accident.” Zane didn’t explain much more—just chalked it up to a game mechanic.

“I’m so jealous! I shouldn’t have soloed yesterday—now you two are both Level 16 and I’m stuck at 13. How am I supposed to catch up?”

“Don’t worry, we’re switching to questing next. Oh right, I’ve got a few more friends joining us, but they got wiped by Rainflower and dropped back to Level 10. You okay with that?” Zane asked.

“Oh that—yeah, I saw something about it on the Dreamscape newsfeed earlier. Didn’t think your friends were the ones involved…”

“It’s fine. Starry and I already gave them a little payback.”

“Oh, oh! Speaking of that—Stardust, you were insane! 1v100 and you even one-shotted their guild leader, then walked away like a boss!”
“Ahem—excuse me. It was a 2v100, thank you very much,” Zane interjected.
“Right, right. Shall we go, Stardust? Your friends must be waiting, yeah?”
‘…You old flirt.’ Zane said nothing, but the look on his face said it all.

They returned to the outskirts of Cloudshadow Valley. There, they finally met the four long-waiting guildmates. After a bit of chatting, they were introduced.

First Snow — Level 10 Pugilist
Nangong Fort — Level 10 Archer
Nameless Wanderer — Level 10 Assassin
Zanny’s Cousin — Level 10 Swordsman

The girl on the left was First Snow. Her skin was pale, her dark eyes clear and bright. Her every movement carried an almost spiritual grace. The only thing that ruined the aesthetic was the two red gauntlets on her hands—much like how Elna’s decayed bone armor clashed with her appearance.

Beside her stood Zaria. Contrary to her outspoken personality, she had a petite, delicate figure that inspired protective instincts.

The cheerful guy was Nangong, while the calm and steady one was Wanderer.

“…” Looking at their chosen classes, Zane didn’t even know where to begin.

Snowy, you’re a girl—is a brawler class really the right fit? And Zaria, aren’t you the one who always loves playing ranged? Why’d you pick Swordsman this time?! And Wanderer and Nangong, you guys picked two of the squishiest classes—what, do you expect the girls to tank for you?!

Endless Sea, ever direct, just asked aloud, “You’re all DPS classes. How exactly did you survive leveling?”

Wanderer replied straightforwardly, “We couldn’t. No tank, no heals. We tried once and nearly got clubbed to death by a few Goblins. Then we met two healer girls. Zaria roped them in and we formed a temporary party.”

“Snowy and Zaria each held aggro on one mob, Nangong and I supported with damage, and the two healers kept us up. It worked out decently.”

Zane glanced around. “So, where are they now?”

“Don’t ask…” Nangong sighed. “Poor girls got PTSD from being spawn-killed by the Rainflower guys. They logged off and don’t want to play anymore.”

“Alright… Where are you guys at with the quest?”

“We’ve gathered 79 so far—just a few left,” Zaria reported.

“We’re still missing quite a bit. Looks like we’ll be grinding here for a while,” Zane added.

“No worries. We can’t really grind efficiently anyway—back to Level 10 and missing gear. We’ll just play support roles for now. Zanny, you think you can carry us?” Nangong asked.

“You guys just watch! We’re pushing all the way to the Goblin base camp today!”
