The wolf’s fur was a mix of gray and black, with dark markings on its forehead and muzzle. Its slim, well-proportioned frame and long limbs gave it an agile, predatory look. It bared its sharp fangs, flicking out its long, blood-red tongue, standing there in utter confusion.
“Now that I get a closer look, you’re actually kind of handsome like this~” Starry stepped forward without hesitation, running her fingers through the Gray Wolf’s fur.
“Awoo—!”
He couldn’t speak human language, but Starry could still understand what Zane was trying to say: “How the hell did I turn into this!?”
With Starry’s shared vision, Zane could see himself clearly—his main body had transformed into a Gray Wolf! It looked identical to the one he had just killed.
However, his attributes had carried over from his original body. Even his Poison effect from the Venomfang Sword had been converted into Venomous Claws.
Starry’s gentle strokes across his fur felt… strangely pleasant.
Wait—no! I almost let myself succumb to it! Zane snapped his gaze toward Starry, eyes sharp and piercing.
Faced with his fierce wolfish stare, Starry suddenly felt a little flustered. Her cheeks turned red as she muttered, “Well… in a way, this is kind of like unlocking a hidden class.”
Like hell it is! I wanted a normal hidden class! Not some beast transformation nonsense!
“Oh! I get it now!” Starry clapped her hands together, as if suddenly enlightened. “So you just want to be human? Why not try shapeshifting into an NPC instead?”
Hell no! You’re deliberately twisting my words now!
…
“Revert!”
The necklace flared with light, and once again, the familiar white glow enveloped Zane’s body. A moment later, the light faded, and he had returned to his original form.
“Thank god I can change back… That scared the hell out of me.”
“Since it works fine…” A mischievous smile spread across Starry’s face.
“I refuse!” Zane immediately knew exactly what she was thinking.
“But think about it… Finding even one lone Gray Wolf took forever. If we round up an entire pack, it’d be way more efficient. Of course… you know what that means, right?”
“…”
If a whole pack of Gray Wolves swarmed him, his paper-thin defenses wouldn’t hold. Even with 700 HP, he wouldn’t last long. Plus, Gray Wolves were fast—outrunning them wasn’t an option.
Damn it…! I’m only doing this for efficiency! Definitely not because I want to experience being an animal!
“Shapeshift!”
Zane transformed back into a Gray Wolf and let out a howl of resignation.
Starry effortlessly swung herself onto his back, side-saddle, and gave him a light tap. “Alright then—let’s go!”
“Awoooo…” His howl was filled with sorrow.
Under the moonlit night, a girl and a wolf dashed into the darkness.
…
“Hey, did you guys just see that!? Someone was riding a wolf!” A nearby player shouted in shock.
“Dude, you’ve been up too long. You’re hallucinating. It’s just us three here. We were the first players to arrive in Wynwater City. How could anyone have gotten here before us? Besides, the mount system isn’t even unlocked yet.” Another player dismissed him casually.
“Quit chatting and focus! I can’t hold this thing off much longer—start attacking!”
“Got it! Flameburst!”
A Gray Wolf’s base speed was already 1.5 times faster than the average player. With Sprint activated, it increased to 1.8 times. And in the dimly lit night, it was no wonder those players barely caught a glimpse.
“Under the tree ahead, to the right—there’s one,” Starry said.
Zane didn’t respond. He simply adjusted his direction, charging toward the right without hesitation.
Despite this being his first time experiencing a Gray Wolf’s body, the movement felt strangely natural. In fact, it was almost effortless—as if he were simply controlling his own body.
“Stop!” The Gray Wolf ahead narrowed its blood-red eyes, clearly unable to comprehend why one of its own was running alongside a human.
Zane suddenly realized that he could understand its language. But he didn’t care. He refused to slow down and continued charging straight ahead.
Starry lowered her body, gripping the Autumn Moon Sword tightly. As the two wolves crossed paths, a crimson flash cut through the darkness— A burst of bright red damage numbers scattered into the air alongside splattering blood.
A single, ordinary slash— No critical hit, no weak point attack— Yet it instantly killed the full-health Gray Wolf!
A bug? No. This was the momentum-based damage bonus granted by cavalry charge mechanics.
Normally, this feature wasn’t something players would fully exploit until much later in the game. After all, the mount system was rumored to be unlocked much later.
Now, with high-speed movement and one-hit execution, Starry had become a reaper in the night, mercilessly harvesting the lives of the Gray Wolves. Even their “Call for Reinforcements” skill had become useless.
“Even like this, finding them one by one is still too slow,” Starry murmured. She still felt that their efficiency was lacking. “Let’s try that instead.”
Zane remained silent for a moment. Then, he lifted his proud wolf head and let out a deep, resonant howl— “Awoooooo—! Awooooo—!”
The powerful call echoed through the vast plains, igniting a chain reaction as countless other howls rose in response. Soon, the entire field was filled with overlapping wolf cries.
Then came the rumbling thunder— A rhythmic, pounding sound as a massive wolf pack stampeded across the land.

Wynwater City, West Gate
“What the hell are these beasts howling for in the middle of the night?” A man in heavy armor stood atop the city wall, gazing into the distance.
“Lord Aegis, it could be that the arrival of adventurers has provoked them,” one of the soldiers beside him speculated.
“Adventurers, huh…?” Aegis snorted coldly. “Let them suffer a little, then. These so-called adventurers never know their place. I may not have the time to deal with these magibeasts, but that doesn’t mean they’re so easy to trample over. If this serves to remind those adventurers not to be so arrogant, all the better.”
“Brilliant, my lord!” The surrounding soldiers nodded in agreement, praising his wisdom.
“…”
…
The three-man monster-hunting party was still cautiously pulling monsters. Their team consisted of a Knight, a Mage, and a Priest. After repeated attempts, they had reached a conclusion—Call for Reinforcements was an ability that Gray Wolves would inevitably activate once their HP dropped below 30%. To counter this, the Knight had to use Taunt to forcefully interrupt it, while the Mage needed to hold onto Flameburst in case the wolf tried to escape using Sprint.
That’s right—they had all already completed their Class Advancement. The 1 gold coin required for advancement wasn’t a big deal for them. Before even reaching Level 10, they had spent several thousand RMB to buy a dozen gold coins as startup funds. Using those coins, they purchased gear—while only temporary, it still gave them a solid head start. As a result, they had pulled ahead of most players and were already farming Level 13 monsters!

The player named ‘Twelve Degrees’ shouted as he unleashed his spell. The Gray Wolf’s HP bar instantly dropped by a quarter.
“Twelve, your damage is insane… I doubt even players of the same level could survive that.” The Knight, ‘Xavier Frost,’ remarked while tanking. The Gray Wolf retaliated with a swipe, but it only shaved 67 HP off him.
“Most players are probably still running around without proper gear. Let’s be real—only a few of us are willing to spend money on equipment this early. Without gear, their defense is paper-thin, and there aren’t many magic resistance items available at this stage either.” The Priest, ‘Righteous Light,’ added, casting Heal.

A green number popped up above Xavier’s head.
“If we keep leveling ahead of the pack and make a name for ourselves, big guilds will start recruiting us. Then we won’t have to worry about resources anymore!”
“We’ll see. Honestly, just the three of us leveling together is nice—we don’t have to answer to anyone.” Twelve Degrees replied.
“Yeah, I can’t stand having to meet expectations all the time. We’re here to play a game, not go to work.” Righteous Light agreed.
“Fine, fine… I just wanted to join a big guild to meet some girls.” The Knight, Xavier Frost, rubbed his increasingly bald head and sighed.
“Tch, lonely single dog.” The other two scoffed at him in unison.
“Screw you guys! You both have girlfriends—you wouldn’t understand my suffering!”
After taking down the Gray Wolf, Xavier suddenly stopped moving.
“Lagging? Loot the drops and move on to the next one.” Twelve Degrees called out.
“Wait… don’t you hear something?” Xavier said cautiously.
“Huh?”
“Look over there!” Righteous Light pointed to the left—toward the vast open plains. Hundreds of wolves thundered across the land in unison.
“Holy sh—”
“Crap! They’re headed straight for us!” Twelve Degrees panicked.
“Watch out—!” From ahead, a voice rang out. Seeing the players up ahead, Starry shouted at the top of her lungs.
