“Master Orbet, why?!”
“What do you mean, Ahab?! What’s going on?”

The five vampires—Ahab, Putora, Leila, Barney, and Lawrence—appeared agitated and restless. Suddenly, as if something startling had occurred, they began to rustle and tremble with visible unease. The front quickly started to fall into disarray.

“Calm down! Master Orbet is safe!”
“Ahab, I’m going!”

As soon as the sun’s crest dipped below the horizon and night began to fall, shadows around the vampires swelled with the emergence of their familiars. They were manservants with white skin. Night was when vampires could exert their full strength. Even though these beings were low-class servants, their power could not be underestimated.

The five vampires left their servants to confront Howard and the others, while they each withdrew from the front one after another.

However, Ryder Haggard stepped forward to block one of them.

“Where are you going, vampire? I’m your opponent!”
“Move! I don’t have time to deal with you!”
“Move me then!”
“Don’t get cocky, human!”

After being blocked by the Ryder, the vampire known as Lawrence transformed his hand into a vicious claw and lunged at him. But Ryder deflected the attack with his knight’s sword. A sharp, metallic clang rang out through the area.

“Human scum!”

Lawrence sneered, and his body blurred instantly. He vanished from sight, only to reappear behind Ryder a moment later.

“You’re slow, you foolish human!”

Lawrence reappeared and thrust his claws mockingly and forcefully toward Ryder’s heart from behind. However, Ryder kept his back turned, and without looking, angled his knight’s sword over his shoulder to intercept the claws.

“You vampires are always the same. You’re just fast. Everything you do is boring.”
“W-What did you say?!”

Lawrence’s eyes widened in disbelief as his claws were caught mid-strike. Ryder turned to face forward, twisting the vampire’s claw with his knight’s sword. With a swift upward motion, he severed Lawrence’s right arm from the elbow using the blade, which shimmered with golden holy energy. Lawrence leapt backward as fast as he could, but his severed arm spun through the air above him in a wild arc.

“ARGH! W-What is this pain! Damn it!”
“You vampires are like lizards. You regenerate right away, regardless of how many times we wound your physical body. So…”

Ryder pierced Lawrence’s severed, falling arm from below with his knight’s sword, channeling a surge of concentrated golden holy energy into it. The arm then exploded into shimmering particles of light and dissolved into the air.

“So we pump you full of holy energy like this and wipe you out alongside your filthy souls!”

Ryder swung his knight’s sword down with force as he shouted to the vampire.

“Y-Y-You!!!”

Lawrence’s expression twisted in disbelief as he realized his severed right arm had not regenerated. His mouth split open, his face flattened, and his nasal bridge extended. His eyes turned completely blue and began to glow with a dull light. The claws on his limbs sharpened further, and his legs transformed into those of a beast. Lawrence transformed into a reptilian figure standing on just two feet.

“Now that’s more like it, Vampire!”

Ryder’s eyes began to glow with a golden light, and his dark blond hair fluttered in the wind. The air around his body shimmered like a mirage. A thick, holy aura enveloped him.

He kicked off the ground and closed the distance to Lawrence like the wind, while Lawrence let out a beastly scream. Startled by Ryder’s sudden speed, Lawrence wrinkled his nose in irritation, summoning several small magic circles in front of him. From them, icicles the size of a human arm shot out one after another toward Ryder.

Ryder dodged, ducked, weaved, and slashed through the pillars of ice. He remained completely unharmed as he closed the distance, diving in close to the monstrous figure before him. Lawrence swiftly brought his left claw down on Ryder as soon as he was in range.

Ryder swerved to evade, but Lawrence followed up with a kick to Ryder’s face using his right foot. However, Ryder was just like a leaf and slipped past the blow. With flowing movement, he made his way to Lawrence’s right side. Without hesitation, Ryder drove his knight’s sword into Lawrence’s side. He then forced the blade’s tip deeper, aiming straight for the vampire’s heart.

“Aaarghhh!”
“It’s over, Vampire! Begone!”

As Lawrence screamed and coughed up blood, Ryder spoke in a low, grave voice, pouring golden holy energy into his knight’s sword. The vampire, his heart shattered by the infused holy energy, was engulfed in light and erupted, dissolving into particles that vanished into the air.

Ryder slowly withdrew his sword from the space and gave it a sharp swing to clear away the blood.

“Ahab! Lawrence isn’t following!”
“Leave him, Putora! Master Orbet comes first!”
“There he is! Right where the ghouls released by Master Orbet are headed.”
“Head over there!”

The four vampires moved silently through the forest. Ahab, leading the group, issued commands to the shadow ghouls lurking within their darkness.

Several shadowy forms emerged from beneath them and slipped into the trees, vanishing into the forest’s depths.

“I’ll never forgive them! I’ll tear them to shreds!”
“Who in the world was able to do such a thing? It’s great that Master Orbet is still alive.”

Suddenly, a shockwave rippled through the forest. At that same moment, the vampires sensed that all the shadow ghouls had vanished.

“Huh? What the…”
“Whoooaaa!”
“Hyaaa!”

One by one, the three vampires were hurled into the air.

“Leila! Barney! Putora! What in the…”

Ahab, the Elder Vampire, cried out. The last thing he saw was a fluttering, grass-colored skirt and a silvery-white blade rushing toward him. In that instant, the vampire who had lived for over 200 years dissolved into pale white particles, fading into the air.

A roar echoed through the forest. Then came a massive pillar of fire, which vanished in an instant. This was followed by a deep rumbling that shook the ground and vibrated through the air. Many on the front lines of the battle heard the sound, saw the burst of flame, and felt its tremors.

“Boss! What was that sound?! What’s up with these vibrations?!”

Marcel Avans, having just slain a Lesser Vampire with a blade of wind, turned to Howard Cloud in alarm and shouted.

“Fufu… That rascal.”

Howard muttered with a smirk, his mouth twisting into a grin as he swung his Zweihänder and cleaved through a Lesser Vampire.

The white Lesser Vampires were the familiars left behind by the higher-ranked vampires. While these Lesser Vampires were regarded as nothing more than servants, they were still powerful monsters. They were too hard to handle for the lower-ranked members of the guard.
