“I don’t know what you just said, but why does it feel like you’re suddenly worshiping me…”
Still breathing heavily and raising an eyebrow, Susie looked down at Argernon with a scowl. Argernon squealed with laughter and looked up at Susie.
“Oh, no! I’ve got to get rid of the last one! Argernon! If you’re going to follow me, you’d better behave this time, okay?”
Argernon squeaked in reply.
Susie tucked him back into her chest and began to move. Her goal was to reach the main culprit, probably the one who had attacked and fled earlier. When she had tagged him, she realized the enemy was a True Vampire.
(I want to rid the village of these infidels, but he’s a True Vampire. He’s been around for quite some time. I should try to get as much information out of him as possible!)
Luckily, the True Vampire wasn’t hard to find. A sickening presence hung heavily in the air. To Susie, it looked like someone was using a sprinkler to spread sewage.
“This is so nasty!”
That was Susie’s first impression when she saw the creature floundering on the ground. And it wasn’t just because of its appearance. The atmosphere around it was steeped in impurity, as though it were actively spreading filth.
“Are you the mastermind?”
Susie asked with a raised eyebrow, staring down at the figure at her feet. The presence it gave off was so vile, it made her feel like she was staring at excrement, too repulsive to look at directly.
“What the hell are you? What the hell did you do? What did you do to those kids?” The vampire bared his fangs and glared up at Susie, veins bulging beneath his skin.
“What did I do? Well, I sent them flying because they attacked me.”
(What is this guy talking about?)
Susie tilted her head, silently echoing the question.
“That aside, I’ve got something I’d like to ask.” Susie said, making a dismissive wave with her palm. “Do you know of the Child Eater?”
The vampire widened his eyes and looked up at Susie in surprise. “Are you being serious right now?”
Susie raised her eyebrows in disgust at the vampire’s comment. “Do you know him or not? If you don’t, that’s fine, but!”
If he didn’t know, if there was no useful information to extract, then there was no point in keeping him around. Susie pointed the tip of her sword, now charged with sword chi, at the screaming creature lying at her feet. Orbet, unaware of the dark thoughts running through Susie’s mind, raised his voice in confusion, unsure of what was happening.
“Screw you! I’m Orbet Mash! I am the noble being you lowly mortals call Child Eater!”
Susie arched her eyebrows even further, glaring down at the filth-covered figure crawling at her feet.
“Orbet? I didn’t know your name… So you’re him, then.”
“Damn it! What is going on? Those children are nowhere to be found! Why?! Why won’t my body go back to normal?! Damn it! You! What did you do to me?”
Orbet’s lower body, crushed earlier by Susie, continued to crumble, white smoke billowing from it without any sign of healing.
“You b̲i̲t̲c̲h̲! Damn it!!! You human! What have you done to my body? You’re nothing but food for us! Know your place! Humans! Damn you!”
“Hmphhh.” Susie relaxed her shoulders and looked down coldly at Orbet, her eyes narrowed as she stood swaying, holding both swords loosely at her sides.
“Why are you looking at me like that? Don’t make fun of me?! What’s with the humans in this damn village? You’re just like that old man, a lowly creature! Just wait! I’ll heal my wounds right now, and I’ll feed on you! You should feel honored! Oh, you have red hair too? Ha ha! This reminds me of a girl I once had in this village! Satisfy me like she did! Ha-ha-ha-ha! Then I’ll have that old man! I’m going to rip that old fool to shreds! Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!”
“It seems you are him. I also figured out that you’re no better than those Orcs. And you mentioned Papa Howard…” Susie turned her gaze away from Orbet, narrowing her eyes with a gentle look as she stared into the distance.
“Huh? Don’t play with me! Don’t lump me in with pigs! You trashy worm! Damn it! Why? Why won’t I heal? Damn you, damn you! What the hell did you do? Is it the priest’s technique? What the hell? What are you? I didn’t know there was anyone like you! Who the hell are you?”
Susie calmly sheathed her sword as Orbet raged.
“Me? I’m Susie Cloud. Howard and Sonia Cloud’s daughter. I’m the Cloud family’s second daughter, Susie Cloud!!” Susie announced her name loudly and proudly. Her face radiated satisfaction, and her smile was full of joy. Rodent eyes peeked out from her chest and gazed up at her proud expression.
“W-What the hell is this girl on about?”
Orbet muttered to himself. Susie narrowed her eyes at him and continued as if she had finally had enough.
“People don’t come back after they die. A dead person’s wounds don’t heal. Didn’t you know that?
Susie said in a teasing manner, tilting her head at Orbet.
“W-What in the world are you talking about?! I’m immortal! An immortal being who has transcended death! A human’s consciousness cannot comprehend me! I am the ruler of the dark night!”
Susie shrugged her shoulders in disgust and exhaled, as if to show she was thoroughly disappointed.
“And? I’m just following the natural order here. Besides…”
She pointed into the distance as though looking at something and said, “Look there.” Then, she suddenly ran toward Orbet with a small, toddling trot, picked him up, and kicked him with all her strength.
“ARGH!”
Orbet’s body arced through the air and flew far beyond the forest.
“I don’t care how strong you think you are. I don’t want to picture you winning against Papa Howard for even a split second!”
She placed her hands on her hips, scowling as she spoke to the now-absent Orbet.
“Now then, time to clean up! There are still a lot of dogs and bats scattered around the village, so I should quickly take care of them.”
With her hands still on her hips, she glanced backward and muttered. Rodent eyes, peeking from her chest, gave an enthusiastic squeak in response.
“I’m sure by the time I finish cleaning up, Papa Howard will be done too, so I’ll need to thank him!”
Squeak!
“After we’re done with that, we should hurry back to the school. What do you say, Argernon?”
Argernon squealed joyfully. Susie dashed straight through the forest, heading back toward the village.
