The roughly 12,000 Mad Lemmings were writhing fearlessly, climbing over and overlapping one another, forming a seething black mountain of chaos.
Had that horde been unleashed on the village, the result would have been catastrophic. It was impossible to imagine how long it would take to eliminate them one by one.
So, now was the perfect time to deal with them all at once. If they were annihilated, there would be no problem. But just how powerful would an AoE skill need to be to destroy such a massive number? The scope of it was simply hard to imagine. What was certain, though, was that such a skill would also flatten the village in the process. Susie shuddered as the image of the distant mountain range flashed through her mind.
(I’m not using any AoE skills!)
Still, she had to find a way to bring them all together and eradicate them efficiently. She resolved to find a location where the damage to the forest would be minimal. Fortunately, there was a suitable area nearby. First, she needed to lure them there.
Susie immediately accelerated, leaping high into the air before the towering black mass. While airborne, she put the two swords in her hands back into their sheaths at her waist and retrieved a shield from her inventory.
Bone Shield. A round shield about 60 centimeters in diameter, carved from the bones of a massive Demonic Beast. It was a high-tier equipment of the Zero Rank.
As soon as she retrieved the shield from her inventory, she equipped it securely on her left arm. The skill she was about to use required a shield to be equipped. Susie soared over the top of the black mountain and, raising the shield high above, activated her skill.
Spread Hate. Sentinel Knight Deification Skill. Provokes all nearby enemies, compelling them to focus solely on the caster.
Up until that point, the black mountain had been shifting steadily, if not quietly, then at least in a restrained manner, but Susie’s skill sent a visible ripple through the entire mass, as though detonating it from within. Immediately after, Susie activated another skill, this one directed at the commander of the swarm.
Chain Bind. Sentinel Knight Skill. Allows the caster to bind the target with a chain, forcibly making them the focus of all incoming attacks.
Susie caught the Evil Warrat with the chain just before she landed, yanking it toward her. Without hesitation, she grabbed its head and began to drag it along as she ran. The Evil Warrat screeched in fury, its rage now entirely directed at Susie.
As the commander of the Mad Lemmings, if Susie became the target of their hate, then the entire swarm would go after her. She continued pulling the Warrat behind her, repeatedly using Spread Hate to further provoke it.
Like that, Susie sprinted straight through the forest. Soon, she reached a wide, open area. A clearing roughly 30 meters in diameter, one of the designated battle zones scattered throughout the forest. It was the very place where she had first encountered Howard. This clearing was several times bigger than the others, making it the perfect place for this confrontation.
Gripping the thrashing Warrat by the head, now even more enraged, Susie leapt from between the trees and glided into the center of the clearing. Using her momentum, she slammed the creature’s head into the ground as she landed.
“You stay put here!”
The Warrat’s head was slammed into the ground, and it clawed at the dirt in a panic, but it was helpless to resist. Soon after, the black mass surged forward like a tsunami.
As the front line of the swarm spilled into the plaza, Susie activated Spread Hate once again. A wave of dark energy pulsed out with a thunderous resonance, amplifying the fury directed at her.
Like a tidal wave of rage, the black horde came crashing toward her, intent on crushing her beneath its weight. But Susie swiftly leapt from the center of the clearing to its edge, narrowly avoiding the initial wave. There, she waited until the black tide caught up with her. Then she began running counterclockwise along the perimeter of the clearing.
The massive swarm followed, curving into a wide arc inside the clearing as it tried to keep up. Susie maintained a carefully calculated pace, keeping just ahead of the horde, never too fast to lose them, never too slow to be caught. Gradually, the wave began to spiral inward, the diameter of its circle tightening with every revolution.
Susie ran harder, trampling the Mad Lemmings that caught up to her. Many of them leapt toward her, but she sliced through them with such speed and precision that they had no chance; bodies arced into the air, severed and flailing.
Eventually, by steadily tightening the circle with each lap, the swarm transformed into a whirlpool of black fury within the clearing. Susie reached the center, where the Evil Warrat lay buried, and kicked off the ground, leaping high into the air.
As she launched herself upward, she trampled the Warrat beneath her, crushing it completely along with the ground beneath, which caved in under the force.
The surrounding Mad Lemmings were blown away by the impact, creating a wide, doughnut-shaped void in the center of the swirling mass. But only moments later, the swarm surged again, climbing over its fallen, trampling one another, scrambling upward. What formed was a rising whirlpool of black bodies, spiraling violently toward the sky.
It ascended like a tornado, racing toward Susie as she reached a height of 30 to 40 meters above the ground. The mass below took on the shape of a twisted Tower of Babel.
As it neared its limit and began to slow, Susie looked down at the vortex below.
(Ok! Almost the entire horde has been contained within the boundaries of the clearing!)
With her right hand, Susie drew one of her swords from the sheath at her waist, focused her Mana into the blade, and thrust it toward the very heart of the storm.
“Kelm eigo spelo eude! I, Susie Cloud, daughter of the Cloud family, call upon you, Salamander, spirit of fire. Shoot through my enemies with the power of your flame! Fire Bullet!”
It wasn’t her original offensive magic but rather a powerful invocation of the Spirit Magic she had learned in this world. The spell she used was the same elementary-level fireball that Carl cast. But the amount of mana Susie poured into it was beyond comprehension.
The fireball that formed in response was immense, more than five meters in diameter. That great mass of condensed flame launched with a thunderous roar, tearing through the air. It engulfed the black tower, burning and scattering it like paper as it crashed downward and struck the earth. The impact carved out a crater nearly 50 meters wide, reducing the surrounding trees to ash in an instant.
“……”
Susie, descending from above, looked down at the devastation below. She bit her lip and broke into a heavy, cold sweat.
“I overdid it…”
As Susie fell to the ground, Argernon emerged from her chest, causing a commotion.
“Aahh! T-This… I-I told you not to move! Oohh… Ahh! Nhh!”
Susie clutched her chest and crumpled into a heap, as if she couldn’t endure it any longer.
Squeak! Squeak! Kyukyu! Kyukyukyu! Kyukyu Kyukyukyu!!!
(Whoa! To think you destroyed all of them in an instant! You’re amazing, big sis! From now on, please think of me as your brother! I’ll follow you until the end, Big Sis!)
