Susie tilted her head, raised an eyebrow in mild annoyance, and muttered, “You haven’t stopped whining since the beginning.”
Before Doug could react, she was already standing before him. With a swift horizontal slash of her right-hand blade, she cut through him effortlessly.
“Huh? Blugh!”
The vampire known as Doug exploded right there and then. The explosion shattered his body into countless white grains, then dissolved completely into the air. His presence, his very existence, was erased without a trace.
“Doug? W-What happened?! Y-You! What did you do?!” Eliza recoiled instantly, leaping back. Her hands transformed into deadly claws as she shouted in fury and disbelief…
“I told you already, you’re annoying.” Before anyone could react, Susie, now behind Eliza, slashed cleanly with the sword in her left hand.
“Huh?!” And just like that, the vampire named Eliza scattered into glowing white fragments, disintegrating into the air.
“I have no intention of holding back against you.” With a cold, unwavering expression, Susie stared into the space. Then, she slid both of her swords back into their sheaths at her waist.
When Susie returned to the others, she found Clark and Ashton holding Fiorina in their arms, calling her name with growing worry.
“Only Fiorina hasn’t woken up!”
Corin, pouring healing magic into her, looked up at Susie.
Earlier, Susie had heard that the vampires had sucked Fiorina’s blood. Earlier that day, Henry had explained that when a vampire feeds, it doesn’t just steal blood; it robs part of the victim’s astral body and manas as well. Unless the vampire responsible is destroyed, the trapped soul cannot be released.
In theory, the astral body could regenerate if the victim’s MP was replenished. That seemed to be the case with William. He had only been drained of blood, and once Vitality Release restored his HP and MP, he regained consciousness. Susie had already destroyed the vampire that had taken Fiorina’s manas, so it should’ve technically been freed.
The reason Fiorina still wasn’t waking up was likely due to a severed connection with her manas. If that were true, then maybe Fiorina could be revived by restoring the connection between the physical body and the soul. That was what Susie believed.
Susie didn’t believe it was possible to bring the dead back to life in this world. In the game, there had been a revival spell known as Resurrection. It restored characters from an incapacitated state. She had cast it before. But Susie found it hard to believe that the incapacitation in the game and the death in this world were the same thing.
What if incapacitation in the game simply meant fainting here. As long as they regained consciousness, they’d be able to fight again. Just as Will had done. But what if the Resurrection spell was just that? So what if someone died? Would there be anything she could do? Susie’s stomach twisted at the thought.
Susie had never actually thought of trying Resurrection out. Would she just wait for someone to die to test it? And what if things didn’t go according to plan after she used it? The thought alone made her shiver. This was also why she’d been so shaken at the thought of Sonia dying. It had terrified her, because she knew, deep down, that there was no guarantee she’d be able to bring her back to life. That much was obvious.
However, if this Resurrection was a magic that could restore the connection between souls, then Fiorina might be able to wake up because of it. The connection between her physical body and mana was likely thin, perhaps extremely so, but not completely severed. In the past, Mr. Henry couldn’t save Lavi because her mana had remained trapped. However, Fiorina’s situation was different. Susie didn’t know if bringing someone back to life was possible. But Fiorina hadn’t died yet! So it was worth giving it a shot.
Susie knelt beside Fiorina and extended one hand to activate the spell, Resurrection.
Light flowed from Susie’s palm. The warm light rose like a pillar and enveloped Fiorina’s entire body. Eventually, it faded away, as if melting into her.
“Phew,” Susie exhaled as she stood up.
Fiorina’s closed eyes twitched, and then she slowly lifted her eyelids.
“ “Fiorina!!” ”
Clark and Ashton hurried to her side. Fiorina’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Huh? What? Why? How?”
“I’m so glad! I’m so happy you’re okay, Fiorina!”
Corin took Fiorina from the twins and embraced her tightly.
“Huh? What?” Fiorina said with a puzzled expression.
After checking on everyone and letting out a deep sigh of relief, Susie turned her sharp gaze to the north.
“Su, what’s wrong?” Beatrice noticed Susie’s expression and asked.
“There are 20, no, 30 more enemies coming toward us.”
“What?!”
Her words startled not only Beatrice but also the children present at the scene. The new stone wall Beatrice had deployed was strong, and the Shadow Dogs couldn’t break through. Even so, some of them managed to leap over it. Dana and Lombard were still engaged in dealing with those. The bats swooping down from the sky were shot out of the air by Mary’s bow and two members of the magic group.
“But the way you all are now, it should be fine. Those are nothing more than small fry. The buffs should last about an hour more, so it will be fine. Also…”
Susie raised her right hand above her head and snapped her fingers.
“Come, Yggdrasil!”
A massive, seed-like object plummeted from the sky and struck the ground with force. Immediately, its outer shell split open, revealing a trunk that rapidly grew and spread branches, transforming into a young tree in an instant.
Summon Yggdrasil. Great Wiseman Skill. Summon a sapling of the World Tree, Yggdrasil, granting the breath of life to all who rest beneath its shade.
“If you stay at its base, even if you get hurt, you’ll heal quickly, and your Mana will be restored.”
“What? Wait a minute! What’s the meaning of this, Su?!”
Mia’s eyes widened as she rushed over to Susie in astonishment.
“I summoned a Yggdrasil sapling. It’ll last about an hour, so you don’t need to worry.” Susie replied casually.
“Y-You cast a summon spell in an instant?!” Beatrice’s eyes went wide, and she stood frozen, her mouth hanging open.
“So, everyone, just hang in there a little bit longer.”
“What are you planning to do, Su?!”
Beatrice, having regained her composure, asked Susie.
“There’s no end to them, so I’m going to strike at the root of the issue.” Susie looked up slightly and stared into the depths of the forest, beyond where anyone could see.
“Will, Lombard, and Belknap protect everyone. Dana, Irvine, Alan, and Helena, take down the enemies. Mia, Carl, and Mary, shoot at the enemies. Willie, Corin, Bibi, take care of everyone,” Susie spoke to each of them.
“Big sis Su! I can do it too! I can fight too!”
“I know you can do it. Stephan! Stay together with Helena, okay?”
“Leave it to me, big sis! I’ll protect him!”
“Please do, Helena.”
Susie patted Stephan on the head and gave Helena a warm smile.
“I’ll be the one to protect you!” Stephan puffed up his chest.
“Yeah, right!” Helena nodded confidently.
“We can fight, too!” Clark and Ashton stepped forward.
Lombard then dragged them away, saying, “Well then, you guys are here.”
“Su!”
“Huh?!”
Suddenly, Mia hugged Susie as tightly as she could.
“Thank you. Thank you so much, Su!”
“It hurt, didn’t it, Mia? I’m sorry I came so late.”
“It’s fine! Totally! Still, will you be alright all by yourself, Su?”
“Yes. So you stay here with everyone, okay, Mia?”
Susie placed a gentle hand on Mia’s waist and looked into her eyes as she spoke softly.
“Thanks, Su. Are you going all by yourself?”
“Yes, Corin. I’ll be fine. So please, look after everyone.”
“I’m leaving it to you! You’ll be done in no time, right?!”
“Of course I will, Bibi. It won’t take more than 30 minutes.”
“We’re counting on you, Su! You’ve got this!”
“Thank you, Dana. I’ve got it covered!”
Dana raised her right fist and shouted, and Susie responded by raising hers as well.
“Everyone, I’m going. I’ll be right back, so don’t worry!”
“Good luck, Su! Go and give them hell!”
Beatrice nodded with a big smile, and Susie returned it with one of her own. She kicked off the ground and sprinted toward the forest to the north. Just then, a shadow dog leapt over the stone wall before her. Susie slashed at it in passing, barely slowing down, and darted straight into the forest. The children watching her stood in awe.
“Come on! Everyone! If we haven’t cleaned these guys up by the time Su gets back, we won’t be able to face her!” Beatrice’s rallying cry sent a wave of energy through the group.
“YEAH!” The children’s battle cries echoed through the area, shaking the earth beneath them.
