As the shadow dog lunged, mouth wide open, Helena struck with the dagger in her right hand, aiming to shatter its fangs.
The blade drove straight into the creature’s lower jaw, slicing through and severing it completely. As another shadow dog leapt in, Helena ducked low, darted into its blind spot, and surged upward, swinging her left dagger inward with precision. The blade ripped through the shadow dog’s belly, spilling its entrails in a single, fluid motion.
“What? Wait, what?!”
Helena couldn’t hide her shock at her agility and the overwhelming power behind her strike. Then, another sharp flash of a blade streaked through the air. It was Irvine’s longsword.
The moment he confirmed that his injuries had fully healed, Irvine grabbed his longsword and charged at the shadow dogs swarming around Susie. With a rising slash, he effortlessly sliced through a shadow dog’s belly, cutting it down in one clean motion. Without pause, he swung the sword downward from above, cleaving into the face of a second shadow dog. Its skull split open under the weight of the blow, killing it instantly.
“What the hell is this? How did it die so easily?!”
Irvine, too, was stunned by the raw power behind his attack. Suddenly, a loud thud echoed behind him. A large hole appeared in the face of the last shadow dog; it had been struck by a Fire Bullet fired by Carl from the rear.
“W-What the… What’s up with this power?”
Carl shouted in disbelief, amazed at the strength of his spell.
Meanwhile, Mary effortlessly sidestepped a Brutal Bat as it swooped past her, then spun around and fired an arrow into its back. Earlier, her arrows had barely pierced its skin, but this time, the arrowhead drove deep into it, dropping the creature instantly. Mary stared at her bow in awe, stunned by both the precision of her aim and the unexpected strength behind her shot.
“Kelm eigo spelo eude. I, Mia Matheson, daughter of the Matheson family, call upon you, Nymph, spirit of water. Unleash the power of flowing water to cut down our enemies—Water Cutter!”
Mia recited the chant and pointed the index fingers of both hands toward the Brutal Bat flying high above. From the tips of her fingers, two razor-thin streams of water shot straight into the sky like twin blades. Mia moved her hands up and down in a swift, precise motion, and the Brutal Bat caught in the path of the cutting stream was split cleanly in half. It tumbled to the ground like a lifeless leaf.
“Whoa! This is unreal! How did it reach that far? How was it so big? Just wow!” Mia’s eyes widened in astonishment, while Willie, standing beside her, was left speechless.
Elsewhere, Dana spun her spear and quickly swept it upward, catching a shadow dog off balance from beneath. The creature, lifted off its feet, had no chance to react. Dana unleashed a rapid series of thrusts. Each strike drove her spear deep into the creature’s body in quick succession.
In the span of a single breath, she yanked the weapon free from its final blow, driven through the beast’s vital point, and turned fluidly toward the next shadow dog, her spear dancing in her hands like a living extension of her will.
Lombard, who had previously been using both hands to handle the massive tower shield, now gripped it effortlessly with his left hand alone. With his right hand, he drew the battle-axe strapped to his waist.
He used the shield to knock several shadow dogs aside with brute force, then swung the axe with practiced ease, crushing the skulls of the enemies charging at him. One by one, their bodies piled up in front of him as he held his ground.
“What the hell? What’s up with these kids? How did they become this strong?!”
“It’s her! She did something!”
“Damn it! Master Orbet’s watching, you know?! Hey! You! Who said you could move?!”
Doug, seeing Alan and the others trying to drag Will and Fiorina to safety, extended a black spear toward them.
Beatrice, who had been checking on the group and asking how they were doing, quickly noticed Doug’s sudden motion.
“No! Stone Wall! Protect those kids!!”
At her command, a powerful stone wall surged upward to shield the group of five. Unlike the weaker walls summoned before, this one shimmered with a quartz-like sheen and solid density, far surpassing anything Beatrice had conjured until now. The black spear struck the wall but was immediately repelled. Beatrice, stunned by the unexpected strength of her magic, stared in disbelief.
“Whoa! Yikes! Belknap, hurry up! You too, Stephan!”
Alan shouted, startled by the sudden appearance of the towering stone wall behind them. He called out urgently, urging the others to move faster. Belknap and Stephan exchanged quick nods, then rushed forward. The five of them tumbled through the opening in the front line that Dana had cleared.
“Here’s one more.”
Once Susie confirmed that all five had made it to the safe side of the defenses, a ripple of light spread out from her.
Vitality Release. Great Wiseman Recovery Skill. Restores all HP and MP to nearby allies and grants a short buff that increases physical recovery.
“Huh? What? My Mana… It’s back? No… It’s more than that!”
Corin blinked in shock as she realized that not only had her nearly depleted Mana been fully restored, but her overall Mana capacity had also increased. It wasn’t just Corin who felt the change. Beatrice, Willie, Mia, and Carl all experienced the same surge, and it didn’t stop with just the magic users. Even the front-liners, and William, who used Mana to power his equipment, were affected.
“Huh? This place. Why am I?”
William slowly regained consciousness, astonished to find nothing wrong with his body. On the contrary, he felt completely recharged; he was brimming with strength, as if he had just woken from a long, nice sleep.
“Will! Will! You’re awake! I’m so glad, Will!”
“Corin? You’re running? You’re standing? But what about your wounds?!”
Corin, seeing William awake, ran straight toward him. William stared in disbelief at Corin, but as Corin threw herself into his arms, William embraced her gratefully and held her tightly.
“What’s happening? Why is he awake?!”
“Damn it! Alas, the sun has already gone below the horizon. Time’s up! Playtime is over!!!”
Doug swung his right hand out with force. In response, the shadows around them swelled and spread rapidly. From within the darkness, five or six humanoid figures emerged, monstrous beings with crocodile-like jaws. More followed. Figures with ghostly white, bloodless skin and glowing red eyes began crawling out of the shadows as if spilling from an overflowing cup. From above, Brutal Bats descended from the sky, while more shadow dogs surged forward like reinforcements from beyond the windbreak.
“This many? We’re doomed! There’s no way out!”
Corin’s voice cracked.
“Su! There’s a barrier around the school! We can’t get out of here!” Beatrice called out quickly, alerting Susie to their situation.
“A barrier?”
Susie glanced up at the sky, her eyes sharp. Then, with a swift, powerful motion, she swung the sword in her right hand upward as if slicing through the very heavens.
The next moment, a sharp crack of light split the sky. Shimmering fractures appeared in the air, and then, with the sound of glass breaking, the barrier dispersed, scattering and vanishing as though it had melted into space itself. Everyone, both allies and enemies, froze. Their eyes turned upward, wide with disbelief.
“W-W-W-W-What the hell?! What did she do?!!!”
“I don’t know! I wish I did! What the hell is going on?!”
Without responding, Susie suddenly leapt into the air, launching herself from the ground with explosive force. She soared in a wide arc, heading straight for the destroyed school building.
“Susie jumped?!”
“Damn it! Why? Why can’t I see?!”
Irvine yelled in shock, followed by Alan’s yells as numerous blows fell down on him, which Susie decided to simply ignore.
In the air, Susie rotated her body vertically and began her descent headfirst, plummeting toward the ground like a thunderbolt.
(Two Elder Vampires. And those things from their shadows appear to be Shadow Ghouls. There are seven of them, huh? And those white ones are Lesser Vampires. This place is swarming with small fry. I can use an AoE attack to wipe them out, but it’s too risky with everyone here. I guess I have no choice. I’ll finish them off one by one. I can leave the dogs and the bats to the others. The way those children are now, they should be able to handle small fry of that caliber.)
After quickly analyzing the situation, Susie drew her twin swords and aimed directly at the ground. She aimed straight for the white targets and unleashed a rapid burst of slashes, so fast it seemed like she was firing a machine gun. A thunderous series of impacts rippled through the air. One after another, the Lesser Vampires were struck down, flung aside like broken dolls. The two Elder Vampires hadn’t even processed what had happened. In a single breath, all of the servants they had summoned… were gone.
“Huh? What? What the hell?!”
Doug shouted in panic. Susie landed squarely in front of the ruined school building. The moment her feet touched the ground, she swung her right-hand sword with immense force. The sheer pressure of the swing released a shockwave that tore through the Shadow Ghouls in an instant. They let out one final roar before fizzling into nothing, vanishing from existence.
“Can someone tell me what in the actual hell is going on? Who are you?!”
Doug spun around, shouting in confusion, stomping his feet as he searched for his familiars, who should have been nearby.
