Just as William shouted, the stone wall shattered with an explosive sound. From behind it, countless black spears flew through the wreckage. The wall of wind, unable to fully block them, allowed the spears to slip through, closing in fast on William and the others. William and Lombard braced themselves, deflecting the spears with their shields, while Irvine and Dana each swung their longsword and spear, cutting down the onslaught as best they could.
Yet, the torrent of black spears was relentless, and the vanguard was bound to suffer injuries.
“Urgh!”
“Ah! Argh!”
Irvine’s cheek was slashed open, and Dana’s arms and thighs were wounded by grazing blows.
Mia decided to abandon her original earth diversion spell and stretched out her hand to cast a higher-level magic.
“Crush! Rock Block!”
Basketball-sized chunks of rock rained down between them and the enemy. The barrage either blocked the incoming spears, knocked them off course, or shattered them, significantly reducing the pressure on the vanguard. In the brief moments of reprieve, Corin and Beatrice quickly moved in to heal Dana and Irvine’s wounds.
At the same time, the black spear assault suddenly came to an end.
“So? Is everything going according to your plans?” The boy asked, his mouth twisted in amusement.
Both William and Lombard, who were still holding their shields, had been wounded. Willie reached out his hand to heal William, but William waved him off, directing him to tend to Lombard first. Irvine and Dana’s bleeding had stopped, but both were breathing heavily.
(Only 10 minutes and we’re already in this state. How much longer can we last?)
William glanced behind him. Corin and Beatrice had grim expressions on their faces, fully grasping the severity of the situation.
“Oh yeah! Remember this thing I got? Using it would’ve made things annoying for us.” The boy continued speaking, idly toying with the barrier device he had taken from William. “If it’s me and the others, then we can bypass this level of barrier no problem. But our retainers are a different story.”
William felt a wave of horror wash over him at the vampire boy’s words.
(The barrier wouldn’t stop him? He’s got to be joking! The barrier in that device is several times stronger than the magic surrounding the training area. If he can pass through that, then the training area’s walls aren’t any better than paper!)
Realizing the implications, the blood drained from William’s face.
“Sooo, given the circumstances, I’ve already called my children!” With that, the boy made a V shape with his fingers, brought them to his mouth, and whistled. “Given that you can’t use the barrier, I could’ve called them anytime I wanted. Ahahahaha.”
Cold chills raced down William’s spine. Something was coming, closing in from all directions.
The others sensed the presence as well, growing tense and scanning their surroundings. A thunderous rhythm of countless footsteps rose, pounding against the earth and slicing through the air, while the sky itself seemed to herald the oncoming approach.
They appeared all at once. Emerging from the shadows of the school building ahead, from the sides of the training area behind, and descending from the sky.
“Everyone! Stand firm against the walls! Don’t spread out! Vanguard! Hold down the front no matter what! Beatrice! Deploy a defensive wall! Hurry!”
(This is bad! Shadow Dogs and Brutal Bats! Even six or seven of these kids would struggle to handle just one of them. This is way too much for them right now!)
While feeling the pressure, William stopped the first Shadow Dog that lunged at him with his shield and lunged his sword at it.
However, the blow was shallow. The creature bared its fangs and sprang at him again. Blocking it with his shield once more, William bought just enough time for Dana to drive her spear into its side and Irvine to slash its neck with his longsword, finally bringing the beast down.
“Block! Rock Wall!”
Beatrice, responding immediately, summoned a wall of stone with her magic. This time, she didn’t just defend. She quickly built a barricade around the entire training area to limit the enemy’s movements. However, the strain of deploying such a wide-area spell at once exhausted her. With a small, pained moan, Beatrice fell to her knees.
“Kelm eigo spelo eude. Gnomes, keepers of the earth, and Nymphs of the waters—grant strength to the children of the land and bind our foes. Barbed Cargo!”
Mia called upon the powers of both the earth and water spirits, weaving their magic together to control the plants in the area.
The ground cracked open, and countless thorny vines surged upward, wrapping around the legs of the Shadow Dogs. The vines immobilized them and wounded them.
“Kelm eigo spelo eude. Let your flames pierce through my enemies! Fire Bullet!”
Carl unleashed a fiery projectile, striking a bat swooping through the sky. Mary and Helena followed up immediately, firing arrows into the burning creature.
“Ahahahahaha! Do your best! Do your best! Ahahahaha…”
At that moment, the bell in the tower swung wildly, its loud chime resonating across the area.
(Good! We completed our objective. Now we just need to hole up in the training area. The three who rang the bell should follow the plan and try to get out of the school as fast as possible. If they try to chase them, then I—!)
William scanned the battlefield, tense and cautious, hand resting on the Control Bead embedded in the center of his breastplate.
“Ahahahaha! It sure rang loudly! I wonder if it spread through the whole village?!”
“What?!” William stared at the vampire in disbelief.
(What is he saying?)
Everyone who’d heard the vampire boy’s words was wondering the same thing.
“What’s wrong with him? Why is he acting like he knew the bell would ring?” Dana voiced the thought that was going through everyone’s mind.
“Why, you ask? Because I made it so that you’d ring it, of course! If you hadn’t rung it, then we would have! Ahahahaha!”
“B-But why would you do that?” Corin asked, her face pale.
“Why huh? Ahahahaha. Well, if it didn’t ring, then the villagers wouldn’t know that this place was being attacked, no? It would be unacceptable if they failed to notice in time, causing dinner to be postponed.”
The abrupt change from his usual light-hearted tone to something darker in his last sentence was chilling.
“So stop playing around and just hand it over to me.”
“Why, I was having so much fun.”
Suddenly, a new figure appeared, a girl dressed in black, no older than twelve.
She wore the same black butler’s uniform as the boy, and her silver hair was tied in twin tails with a black ribbon. Her blue eyes were just as cold and piercing. In her hands, she carried something.
“Alan! Belknap!!!” Corin’s scream echoed.
Alan and Belknap were being dragged by the neck, unconscious and helpless. Both were covered in blood, their bodies battered, with long trails of crimson marking the ground where they had been cruelly dragged.
A Shadow Dog followed behind them, its mouth stained with blood.
“Damn it! Stephan!!!” William gritted his teeth, anguish flooding his face.
The Shadow Dog sank its fangs deep into Stephan’s neck, dragging his limp body. Reddish drool dripped incessantly from the Shadow Dog’s mouth, still tainted with blood from the place where it had sunk its fangs.
“Stephan, Alan, Belknap, My god…”
Corin’s face drained of color as she pressed a hand to her mouth, tears spilling from her eyes. Her plan had led them straight into the enemy’s hands, and it had also cost them three of their own. Corin could do nothing but sob with regret, the weight of her failure suffocating her.
