- School — In Front of the Training Area 16:10
Mia stopped Corin and said, “You shouldn’t walk yet.”
But Corin simply smiled and replied, “I’m fine, thank you,” quietly stepping back from Mia to continue speaking.
“Neither we nor Will can do anything about that thing. The only thing we can do right now is to try and buy time.” Corin spoke softly, her eyes fixed on the enemy, and everyone fell silent.
“But how? How do we call for help? The smoke bombs were near the wall that had just been blown away earlier.”
Mia explained that the smoke bombs, which they were supposed to use to call for help, had been placed on one of the office walls—the very one that had just been destroyed. Now, she couldn’t help but wonder what they could possibly do to call for help.
“We ring the bell.” Corin turned her gaze toward the bell tower standing atop the school building, a fire burning in her eyes. “We ring the bell and let the village know that the school is in danger. Then we hole ourselves up in the training area and focus on defense!”
The training area’s walls had been built solidly to withstand combat training. They were also reinforced with a strong magic seal that turned the place into something akin to a shelter. Its walls were nothing like those of the rest of the school.
“That’s not my type of defensive warfare.”
“We’re not all like you! Besides! Reckless fighting is not something soldiers do!”
“Tch. I know!”
“Good! Just think of it as defensive training, and you’ll be fine!”
“This is no training. It’s a full-blown defensive war.”
“So? Who’s going to ring the bell?” Irvine asked, glancing around.
“I’ll go.”
Suddenly, a voice answered from behind, causing everyone to turn in surprise.
“Stephan?! When did you leave the training area?!”
“You can’t! This is a job for the higher levels! The children of the middle and lower levels should stay inside the training area! Alan! Belknap! Can you go?!”
Beatrice quickly rejected Stephan’s offer and nominated Alan, an apprentice scout, and Belknap, a skilled escort, both from the seventh level, who were standing in the rear.
Belknap and Alan responded with wry smiles, saying, “Yeah,” and “Leave it to us,” respectively.
“I’ll go! Su’s always praising me, saying that out of everyone, I’m the best at concealing my presence! That’s why it’s best if I go!!!”
William, who had been sitting quietly in meditation as if deep in thought, turned his head toward Stephan, who was still insisting. “Okay. We’ll leave this to you, Stephan. Alan and Belknap, you’re tasked with escorting and assisting him.”
“Will?! Have you gone insane?! Stephan is still in the middle levels!” Beatrice’s protests did nothing to change William’s decision.
“This operation requires people who are both quick and stealthy. Stephan, Alan, Belknap, can you do it?”
“I alone am enough. Those two will only hold me back!”
“Stephan, you b̲a̲s̲t̲a̲r̲d̲! We’re going to leave you behind!”
“It’s fine, Will. I’ll protect both of them.”
“During operations, it is customary to work in a team of three. The same applies to the Village Guard. Those who can’t handle that won’t be invited into the group.” William’s words were met with nods of approval from the three boys.
“Listen! Our job now is to keep the enemy in check while staying on the defensive.” William explained as he received the kite shield handed to him by Mary Frank.
“Willie, Corin, Beatrice. When the battle starts, I want you to create a distraction and cast defensive magic. After that, focus on healing. Lombard and I will shield you. Irvine, Dana, you two handle anything that gets past us. But don’t move forward to attack! Those shadow spears will disappear in the sunlight, but their number is nothing to scoff at! Don’t get too focused on just one spear; always be prepared for the next! As for ranged attacks, Mia and Carl, you use spells. Helena, Mary, use your bows!”
“But what if an arrow hits Fiorina? She’s still being held captive by that boy…” Mary voiced her concern as she was preparing her bowstring.
“We don’t need the attacks to hit him directly. Our goal is to simply keep him in check and distract him. It’s enough to aim at the black spears coming toward us or just a bit in front of him.”
The long-range group nodded in agreement. Everyone listened closely to William’s instructions, focusing on the tasks ahead.
“Stephan, Alan, Belknap! As soon as we start attacking, you head for the bell tower! Go around the back of the training area, cut through to the east magic building, and be quick! Once you ring the bell, get out of the school immediately! Head straight for the Village Guard and inform them about the situation at the school as soon as possible!”
The three nodded in unison.
“Listen, there’s only so much time we can buy for help to come. Even more so given that our opponent is a vampire. Once the sun goes down, we won’t stand a chance. Don’t forget. This is a race against time. Everyone, are you ready?!”
A resounding “Yeah!” echoed in reply.
The silver-haired boy watched the scene unfold with an amused smirk. “It seems like the strategy meeting is finally coming to an end. I suppose I’ve waited long enough. It’s time to start.”
The shadows around him stirred and rose, swirling in the air as if mocking the gathered children.
“Tch! He’s coming! Begin defense preparations!!!”
William and Lombard immediately stepped forward, raising their shields. Behind them, Corin, Willie, and Beatrice began casting.
“Kelm eigo spelo eude. I, Corin Saunders, daughter of the Saunders family of Amukham, call upon you—Zilph, great guide of the wind. Lend me your power. Let your winds shield us from those who mean us harm. Air Wall!”
Air Wall, a defensive wind spell that creates a turbulent barrier of air. It reduces the force of incoming attacks and warps the surrounding atmosphere, making it difficult for enemies to aim precisely.
“Kelm eigo spelo eude. I, Willie Hodgson, son of the Hodgson family of Amukham, call upon you—Salamander, great guide of fire. Grant us your flame of life, and bless us with its spark. Life Force of Fire!”
Willie casts a fire support spell, which channels the life force of flame to those nearby, stimulating cellular activity and enhancing both physical capabilities and regeneration.
“Kelm eigo spelo eude. I, Beatrice Croque, daughter of the Croque family of Amukham, call upon you—gnomes, steadfast keepers of the earth. Let the will of stone rise and sever the space between me and my enemies. Rock Wall!”
Beatrice cast an Earth Defense Spell. A wall of solid stone rose from the ground, forming a sturdy barrier between her and the boy. One after another, more stone walls emerged through Beatrice’s Spirit Magic, encircling the group and shielding them from all sides.
“Ranged group! Begin the attack!” Helena and Mary released their arrows, while Mia and Carl raised their voices in a chant.
“Kelm eigo spelo eude. I, Mia Matheson, daughter of the Matheson family of Amukham, call upon you—gnomes, great guides of the earth. Let the strength of the land strike down my enemies. Sand Shot!”
“Kelm eigo spelo eude. I, Carl Giacobini, son of the Giacobini family of Amukham, call upon you—Salamander, great guide of fire. Let the fury of your flames consume our enemies. Fire Shot!”
As they chanted the spirit magic, magic circles unfolded in front of them. From Mia’s circle, a volley of pebbles shot forward, while from Carl’s, small fireballs launched toward the silver-haired boy. A thick cloud of dust filled the air, obscuring the battlefield.
“Now! Go!!!”
At William’s command, the three boys in the rear sprang into action. Stephan, Alan, and Belknap sprinted behind the magic building to the left and quickly disappeared from sight.
“He’s coming! Stand your ground!”
