“I didn’t know Irvine could show such a manly expression!”
“Bibi, have you fallen for him?”
“N-No way! Like I’d ever!!!”
Meanwhile, in the center of the training area, Ryder stood facing Susie.
“Sorry to bring it up, Susie, but these ones are for swinging practice and are heavier than the other swords. It would be brutal if you hit someone with them. Could you pick new ones from the box next to this one?”
“I see!” Susie exclaimed in surprise and hurriedly began selecting different swords.
“Irvine, where’s your armor?”
“I don’t need it.”
“She’s way stronger than I’d heard. At this rate, you’ll end up with a broken bone or two.”
“If it’s broken bones, then I can patch them up in no time! So don’t worry and just go at it!”
Jessica chimed in enthusiastically, raising her hand and grinning.
“You heard her, big bro.”
“Fine then!”
“No… worry! Won’t… break! Leave… to… me!!!” Susie said with an air of confidence while gripping her swords.
“What’s with Susie? She seems to be fired up!”
“She looks to be extremely confident.”
In the middle of the training area, Susie stood facing Irvine.
“Huh? You’re only using one sword?” Irvine asked.
“Yes… Since… spar… this… good… enough…”
“I see. In that case, I look forward to our match.”
“Likewise… Irvine!” Susie replied with a big, friendly smile.
“I-I’ve already told you! That smile is so not fair!”
Irvine exclaimed, to which Susie tilted her head in confusion. Seeing that, Irvine blushed even more.
“There it is again, Irvine! That lewd look!”
“Bibi, don’t get jealous, okay?”
“I-I told you already! It’s not like that!”
Ryder approached Irvine with a stern expression.
“Irvine, do you want to stop here?” Ryder asked in a cold, level voice.
He was suggesting that continuing in such a distracted state would be pointless.
“No! I’m doing it!!!” Irvine shouted, slapping his cheeks repeatedly in an attempt to pump himself up. “Okay! I’m ready, big bro!”
“So you’re doing it?”
“The men from the Haggard Family do not run away in the face of an opponent! Isn’t that right?”
“It certainly is! Okay! Go and make the most of it!”
“Thanks!”
Ryder moved to the center of the room, looking at both Susie and Irvine. With a swift motion, he raised his hand high, then brought it down sharply, signaling the start of the match.
Irvine’s weapon of choice was a longsword. He wasted no time, gripping the sword tightly and placing it atop his right shoulder before lunging forward. He didn’t bother waiting for Susie to move. He was well aware that he was the weaker fighter, so he had decided to jump in first, even if this meant that he could be struck down.
Susie, on the other hand, held her sword loosely in her left hand, her posture and arms relaxed and almost nonchalant. Her expression remained calm, her eyes fixed straight ahead with unwavering focus.
“The air around Su changed.”
“You’re right. She’s scary like that. I wouldn’t want to mess with her.”
Cara and Alicia discussed the sudden change in Susie.
“What? Really? It just looks like she’s standing there doing nothing.” Corin remarked, puzzled by their reactions.
“She has no openings,” Cara responded casually, then continued, “She may look like she’s just standing still, but no matter where you attack, she’ll deflect it. There’s no weak spot to exploit. Having said that, if it were me, I’d still go in anyway!” she remarked in a carefree manner.
Irvine was focused on only one thing. Delivering his strongest, fastest strike. He swung his sword diagonally from the right, putting all his weight and momentum into the blow. If his blow was blocked, he’d maintain the momentum and roll the sword upward to slash from below.
The powerful strike, fueled by his forward charge and the twist of his body, came speeding toward Susie.
However, instead of blocking with the blade, Susie shifted slightly to the side and struck the left side of Irvine’s blade with the hilt of her sword.
The unexpected impact to the side of his weapon was strong enough to throw Irvine off balance, forcing him to stumble forward, his feet shuffling to maintain stability.
Taking the Hanmi stance1, Susie smoothly moved out of Irvine’s path and positioned herself beside him.
Without hesitation, she pressed her right index finger against his temple and flicked it sharply. Irvine’s head snapped back from the surprising force, and he was sent flying towards the wall at an astonishing speed.
“Gagh!”
Irvine’s back slammed against the wall, forcing the air out of his lungs.
(My head hurts like hell! What is this?! What happened?! How was I sent flying2?!)
Irvine tried to figure out the current situation after somehow managing to get his body to move.
“Irvine, are you done?”
(What is big bro saying? Of course, I’m not!!!)
“I’m still good! Let’s try once more!”
“Okay! Take your stance!”
In the end, Irvine ended up being slammed against the ground four more times. Whether it was slashing, sweeping, or even thrusting, all of Irvine’s moves hit nothing.
“Irvine, that’s enough.”
“I-I can… still…”
“You’re switching. Go rest.”
Irving attempted to stand, but his body betrayed him—his limbs refused to cooperate, and he collapsed back onto the ground in a heap.
“Haah… Haah…. Haah….”
“Irvine, are you alright?”
As Irvine lay on his back, panting heavily, Beatrice walked up and kneeled beside him with a worried expression on her face.
“Damn it! To think… that I’d be in this state after only a few rounds… And I wouldn’t even call that a round!”
“Irvine…”
“Good grief… That’s not fair… That’s totally against the rules!”
“You’re right. Her Mana is also out of this world!”
“Damn it! I never imagined the difference between us would be so huge.”
“It’s impossible not to get fired up from that!” “Totally!” “I agree!”
The girls spoke, and laughter spread among them.
“Even you, Bibi?”
“Of course! There’s no way I wouldn’t get fired up after seeing such a display of Mana! Still!”
“Not a single person in this village would lose their motivation after being shown such a difference in strength!”
“That’s right! Rather, it’s harder to resist wanting to challenge them! That’s just how Amukham is!”
“You said it!” Bibi said and burst into laughter alongside Irvine.
Nearby, Mia muttered, “It seems Bibi managed to make up with him.”
“We can finally duke it out, Su!”
“Yes! Dana… that… spear?”
(It’s about as tall as me. At first, I thought it was a club, but is that really a spear? Is it one of those short spears? Since it’s not that long, will she use it like a staff? Dana’s dress also looks quite a lot like a qipao. No, wait! She’s wearing pants, so maybe it’s an ao dai3.)
“That’s right! It’s a spear! I’m also not that skilled, so I too intend to finish this in one go!”
With Ryder’s signal to begin, Dana leaped forward. She swung the spear starting from her back and then twisted her body to add centrifugal force to increase the spear’s speed further. The spear came flying from the right, aiming right at Susie.
But Susie effortlessly intercepted the spear, lifting it from below with her short sword. The forceful deflection of the spear upward caused it to recoil, pulling Dana’s arm with it and exposing her side.
Before Dana could react, Susie’s fingertips lightly tapped her side.
“Argh!” Dana yelled as she was thrown back, colliding with the wall and tumbling to the ground.
“Gah. This is really tough! Still!” Dana gritted her teeth, clutching her side as she slowly got back to her feet and looked forward.
“Not yet! I can still go!” she declared, gripping the midpoint of her spear firmly. With a swift motion, she spun it in a figure-eight pattern in front of her, before lunging straight at Susie. The spear’s tip darted toward Susie from both sides in rapid succession, yet not a single strike landed.
Dana continued to circle around Susie, launching a series of thrusts at various intervals.
Yet, none of them landed. There were moments when the force of the spear being parried almost sent Dana flying. But she eventually managed to make use of that force and incorporate it into the next attack.
The tip of the spear was thrust toward Susie’s face. Susie avoided the strike by tilting her head to the right and struck the spearhead, which was being pulled back, with the hilt of her sword. Unable to restrain the spear as it recoiled with unexpected force, Dana was thrown backward.
Susie quickly closed the gap between them and gently placed her fingertips on Dana’s chest.
“Argh!” Dana was flung into the air and slammed into the wall once more. “Aah! Ugh! Grrh! Bleh!”
The air was forced out from her lungs, leaving her to try and recover herself with the little air she had left. She rose again, using the spear as support.
“Once more!” Dana charged at Susie for the third time4.
