It shook its white hair. Its chilling cerulean blue eyes gazed down on others, ridiculing everyone but itself. The corners of its mouth slowly curled upward, distorting its thin, bloodless lips.
It appeared to be about ten years old. It wore black outerwear over a white shirt. On its chest, it wore a jabot with numerous folds, like those worn by nobility, and at the center of the jabot rested a jewel the same color as its eyes. Additionally, colorful jewels adorned its neck, peeking out from the gaps in its outer garments.
It, who still appeared to be an innocent boy, was holding up a girl. The girl, around twelve or thirteen years old and somewhat larger than him, had been effortlessly lifted by him with only his left hand resting on her waist.
The girl, held by the waist and bent over, stared into the void with wide-open eyes and tears welling up. Her lips drained of blood and quivered as she repeatedly whispered, begging for forgiveness.
The white-haired boy looked at the girl condescendingly, with evident delight. When the boy murmured something into the girl’s ear, her eyes widened even further, and she tried to scream, but no sound escaped her lips. Even though she seemed like she wanted to escape, her body remained motionless, as if bound by an invisible commandment.
The girl’s eyes took on a color of despair, her mouth opening and closing repeatedly in futile attempts to speak. The boy took the girl’s left hand, brought it close to his mouth, and kissed it tenderly.
Then, he slowly tightened his grip around her hand. The sound of bones creaking echoed through the air. The girl’s eyes widened even further, and her lips moved to form the word, “Stop,” but no sound emerged.
Soon, a dull sound, similar to that of several twigs being crushed, echoed through the room. The girl suddenly burst into tears, attempting to scream from the depths of her throat, but only the sound of escaping air emerged. No sorrowful voice escaped; instead, a silent cry reverberated in its place.
The boy, watching the girl’s expression, tilted his head with evident joy, his twisted smile growing wider.
Air escaped from the girl’s mouth in intermittent bursts as she tried to scream.
The boy gripped the girl’s hand and, with deliberate slowness, twisted her arm in the opposite direction of her elbow joint. A crunching sound rang out as the girl’s arm bent in a direction that it wasn’t supposed to bend in.
The girl opened her mouth wider, her body convulsed, and she tried to scream, but once again, only air came out with even greater intensity. The girl’s inability to vocalize her pain only served to amplify her suffering. Tears streamed endlessly from her wide-open eyes, and her pupils quivered slightly in torment.
The boy’s smile deepened with delight as he sensed the girl slipping into madness. He cast aside the girl’s arm and seized her forehead with his right hand.
His fingernails, sharp as those of a predator, dug into the girl’s temples as he pulled her head, exposing her throat. The girl’s eyes flickered with even greater fear.
The boy then took his time, biting at the girl’s throat, as though savoring a bite of the finest fruit. The girl’s body twitched violently with pain and terror, unlike anything she had felt before, becoming rigid as she jerked and convulsed.
The boy’s eyes shifted from cold blue to blood red, glowing and shimmering with a suspicious light.
As the scene unfolded, the girl’s body gradually became drained of its blood, turning as pale as wax. Eventually, life faded from her eyes, her body lost all strength, and she ceased to resemble a living being.
The boy pulled his mouth away from her throat and discarded the body carelessly, as though tossing aside an empty drink can. He moved something inside his mouth, then produced a jewel, about the size of a pinky fingertip, onto his tongue, which looked as if it were stained with blood.
“Hmmm. The color’s no good. It’s murky too.”
He placed the jewel back in his mouth and began to move it around as if savoring a candy.
“Its taste is awful as well! I guess that’s what bad ingredients get you. I shouldn’t have expected any more from a vulgar country girl.”
As the boy spoke, something began to stir in the shadowy corner of the room.
“All yours. She’s already at death’s door and will die if we leave her anyway. Just deal with her.”
As if in response to the boy’s words, something leaped from the shadows and sank its teeth into the girl’s body.
It had the body of a human, but the tip of its nose jutted out, and its mouth looked like it was cut open, filled with disordered fangs. Several such creatures, with crocodile-like heads—neither beast nor man—clung to the girl’s body, baring their teeth.
The creatures bit into the girl’s arm, crushing and severing the bones with their fangs. They tore into the flesh of her thigh, gnawing on the exposed femur. Their fangs sank into her abdomen, ripping it open and pulling out her organs to devour them. They bit into her throat, severing her head, then crushed her cranium, sipping and eating the brain inside.
The girl, barely clinging to life, was consumed alive by the beasts, used up to satisfy their brutal cravings.
“No matter how awful it tastes, food shouldn’t be left to go to waste!”
The boy slouched in his chair, resting his elbows on the table. He continued to lick the jewel from before as if savoring a candy.
“Master Orbet, you have a visitor.”
A young man, appearing around seventeen or eighteen, suddenly emerged from the shadows behind the boy’s chair. He looked to be much older than the boy known as Orbet.
His entire body was encased in a black butler’s uniform, and his fine silver hair, styled neatly in a slick, all-back fashion, took on a wisteria hue in certain lighting. His pupils, which were the same shade of blue as the boy’s, peeked through their slitted shape as he announced the visitor’s presence.
From the shadows behind the silver-haired butler, a woman emerged, moving without making a sound, just like him.
She was in her early twenties, stunningly beautiful, and had a cold air around her. She had white porcelain skin and thick, blood-red lips. Her sky-blue eyes displayed a composed, thoughtful demeanor. Her platinum blonde hair parted neatly down the middle and cascaded down her chest on either side, growing more luminous the further it fell. Her dress had exposed shoulders and a wide-open chest, revealing the rich twin curves that seemed ready to spill out.
The dress that enveloped her was a deep garnet, even redder than blood. The hem of the dress and the ribbons were adorned with black accents and fastened the dress together. The seam of the tiered skirt at the waist pointed downward, giving her a slimmer appearance, while the tiers, cascading in layers from that point, concealed her legs and accentuated her slender waist.
“Excuse me for interrupting your meal. Please forgive my rudeness in arriving unannounced.”
The woman bowed her head quietly, offering an apology for her unexpected visit.
“You should be. Completely tactless of you. Well, it’s all done either way, so it doesn’t matter now.”
Orbet chewed vigorously on the object he had been idly toying with in his mouth.
“I am deeply sorry. I cannot thank you enough for your generosity, Master Orbet.”
Without meeting Orbet’s gaze, the woman bowed her head quietly.
“Tch! So? What is it? Clarimonde the Rat Gofer?”
“Master Rodolphe has a message for you.”
“You’ve come here so that much is obvious! That shouldn’t be all there is. That’s why I can’t stand women in heat! I’m asking you what your business is for coming here!”
“I apologize. Master Rodolphe wishes to delay the Knights of the Royal Capital’s expedition to Iroshio.”
Clarimonde, unfazed by Orbet’s insult, calmly delivered her message without changing her expression.
“Isn’t it that muscle-headed person’s job to handle muscle-headed idiots?!”
“Master Halbert is currently executing his plans in the Great Forest.”
“Tch! Then why doesn’t he just go and intercept them?!”
“Doing so would delay the plans. That is why I have come to ask for your assistance, Master Orbet.”
“Hmph! You sure know how to boss people around. So? What do you want me to do?!”
“The expeditionary force will require a guide to raid the Great Forest. As such, they are bound to coordinate and hire the personnel from the village most familiar with the Great Forest.”
“Oh my. You’re talking about that village, aren’t you?”
Orbet, who had been resting his elbows on the table with his brow furrowed in a sulky expression, narrowed his eyes with growing interest.
“Yes, I am talking about that famous village. Master Orbet, we ask that you make sure that the village will not be prepared for the arrival of the expeditionary force.”
“Does this mean you are okay with me destroying the village?”
“How you proceed is entirely up to you, Master Orbet.”
“Oh my… Fine! I’ve been to that village before to have fun. There were a lot of energetic kids there. There was also one exceptional kid in particular who presented me with a first-rate gem. But then, Rodolphe forced me to use it a bit back. If this is his way of compensating me for back then, then I guess it’s fine. Quite thoughtful of him!”
“We are much obliged.”
“Alright! I’ll go for you!”
“Thank you very much. Rimroad will be pleased as well.”
Orbet extended his hand and cheerfully announced, while Clarimonde responded quietly.
“What?! The king is aware of this as well?! You never thought of having me refuse, did you? Well, whatever!”
“I apologize. Having settled this, may I ask how you plan to act?”
“Let me see. I went to Iroshio just recently. And well, I’d feel sorry for Halbert if he had to return midway, though I guess that necrophiliac wouldn’t mind. Still, I just settled down here! How about I go there in early fall?”
“There would be no problem with that at all. I will inform Rodolphe about your decision.”
“Please do. Then again, it must be hard for you to serve a human, no? Or maybe you serve him because you enjoy it? Haha! Well, whatever, just do your best!!”
“Thank you for your concern. I pray that you accomplish your duty. I will take my leave.”
Clarimonde bid her farewell in a robot-like manner, bowing deeply once more before vanishing into the shadows.
“Hmph! That h̲o̲r̲n̲y rat that only waves her a̲s̲s̲ for those humans!”
Orbet remarked contemptuously at the shadows where Clarimonde had disappeared.
“Ahab! I’m going out! The mansion reeks of that h̲o̲r̲n̲y, vulgar female! Clean it!”
“Understood! Will you take someone with you, Master Orbet?”
“I’m going on a hunt for a change of pace! So it doesn’t matter… Actually, I’ll take Doug and Eliza with me! I enjoy watching those children hunt!”
“Yes, Master! I’ll have everything ready promptly.”
“Good! Although I’m not fond of this, the prospect of a tribune village gives me something to anticipate!”
Orbet’s mouth twisted into an ugly smile, and he swayed as he dissolved into the water, disappearing into the shadows.
