“…Phew, that should do it for what’s needed for the teacher qualification1.” Kanata placed the mechanical pencil on the table and stretched. “Now, what to do next…”
“Hey, wait a moment.”
“What’s up, Sakura?”
As he was about to create new study material with the machine able to create anything he wanted that his older brother had given him, Sakura stopped him.
“U-Uhm, say. Aren’t you studying too much? You’re in here all the time.”
“Hm… well, maybe?”
“It’s true! Ever since we came back to Anazumu, you’ve been constantly studying.”
“Didn’t you join me, too?”
“I did, at the start… for what we needed to graduate from high school. But we’re still in middle school, that’s going too far.” Sakura let out a big sigh. “You have a tendency to get completely absorbed in your hobbies, but to think you’d chose studying for that… You’re in this magic room the whole time, day after day.”
“I wouldn’t call this studying, it’s more like cramming stuff into my mind.”
“That’s what studying is2! Until now, you managed to take the top spot in our academic year merely by listening during class. When we are studying together, it feels more like you teaching me than studying.”
She shrugged as if to say, “good grief”. Even after seeing her expression, Kanata still seemed confused.
“Come on, can’t you give it a rest already?”
“Well, I guess it is time for a break… let’s do that.”
Kanata placed his hands on the table, uncrossed his legs and pushed himself up. The next moment, he lost his balance.
“Gah…”
“Wa-… watch out!”
“Heh-heh, thank you.”
Sakura hurriedly caught him before he fell.
“That happened because you’re sitting all the time.”
“Ha-ha-ha, you’re right…gh!?”
When Kanata replied with a smile, he suddenly clutched the fingers of his dominant hand.
“What’s wrong!?”
“Ah… it’s nothing.”
“Let me see that.”
Sakura forcibly took his hand and inspected the part that seemed to hurt. It was in a horrible state, with huge callouses caused by writing.
“…You need to be more careful.”
“Sorry.”
Still holding his hand, Sakura cast Restoration Magic on him. The poor condition of his body vanished instantly. Then, still holding hands, the two of them left the magic room specifically made for studying.
“I know I said we’d take a break, but what are we going to do…?”
“Taking a nap might be a good idea. You’ve barely been sleeping recently, haven’t you?”
Kanata thought about Sakura’s idea.
“Well, but…”
“What are you glancing at my face…? I-If you want me to spoil you… we c-can sleep next to each other, I guess?” Sakura suggested, although it caused her to turn bright red in embarrassment. Kanata gazed at her with a kind look. “S-So, what will we do?”
“Hm~, I guess I’ll take you up on that.”
“Alright…!”
The two then changed into sleepwear in their separate personal rooms and crawled into their double bed. Sakura pulled Kanata into an embrace that left barely any space between them.
“That’s the first time we’re sleeping next to each other during daytime.”
“I guess that’s true.” She nodded while keeping him in her embrace.
“…Say, Sakura, aren’t you embarrassed when you hug me while we sleep?”
“Huh…!? Ah… uhm…”
Her eyes popped open in surprise and she turned red again. However, she didn’t let go of him.
“Uh… I-I guess it’s because we’re sleeping next to each other?”
“Huh.”
“Wh-What about you, Kanata? Are you no longer embarrassed by it?”
“No, it still makes my heart beat faster. I’m only used to it while we’re sleeping,” Kanata replied while caressing Sakura’s head.
“Hmph… well, whatever. Shall we sleep?”
“Can’t we talk a bit first?”
“…If that’s what you want.”
The two of them started chatting with their faces close to each other.
“…You want to go on a date, soon, don’t you?” Kanata asked.
“I do. We’ve been talking about going to the aquarium, right…? I won’t have any examination at the research institute next week… so I think we could go then.”
When she explained that, he looked overjoyed.
“Are you that happy to go on a date with me?”
“Yep. What about you, Sakura?”
“I’m the same… though I guess I’m more looking forward to it than happy.” She smiled, same as him.
“Right now, I’m thinking of… leaving early in the morning, going shopping in the department store, and then going to the aquarium.”
“That sounds like a good program. At any rate, I’ll be looking forward to it! Since it’s not a simple outing, but a proper date!”
Until now, the two of them often had to act that way when they were out an about. Sure enough, the two of them never perceived those outings as dates, but the people around them certainly did.
“Mmh… let’s sleep, then.”
“Are you tired now? Alright, let’s do that.”
In the room with only a small light on, the two of them slept while holding each other close.
Footnotes:
- I kinda doubt they’ll let him be a teacher with zero practical experience, even if the theory is solid.
- Yeah, if studying equals to just memorizing stuff to you, there’s something seriously going wrong.
