“I hope we can get along well in the future,” Rir finished her introduction and gave a small bow.

“You really fluently speak Japanese, huh?”
“Thank you, for saying that. Isn’t there a Japanese proverb that goes ‘what one likes, one will do well’… Teacher?”

It was adorable seeing her at a loss whether to use polite language in response to the teacher’s praise.

“Just as you told me, she has a cute face but gives off a composed impression, Yamagami whispered. “Or rather, isn’t she super pretty?”
“Right?”

Seeing my girlfriend being praised genuinely made me happy.

“Let’s see… you can take the chair next to Hino.”
“Alright, I will do so.”

As the teacher told her to, she went to the chair next to mine. It was on the edge of the classroom’s last row. While on her way there from the blackboard, she managed to draw the gazes of all my classmates.

As she passed my table, she asked “How did I do?” in a small voice. At the same time as she sat down at her own table, I gave her a thumbs-up with my right hand. She smiled happily and replied with the same gesture.

“Alright, let’s all get along for those one and a half years Miss Fún is with us. Then, time to get this home room started.”

Home room was over. There were still ten minutes until the next class began.

Since there was some time and a new member of the class, my classmates gathered around said transfer student in a rush.

“Fún, your Japanese is incredibly good!”
“Yes, that’s because I practiced constantly.”

And once they had her surrounded, the questions started.

“Hang on… I can’t see her…”
“Wow… she’s really pretty…hm? No, she’s more the cute kind, I guess.”

Moreover, the TV reported about her when she arrived, so an insane number of students from other classes had come, too.

In general, appearance makes the biggest impression when seein’ someone for the first time. Looks like Rir bein’ awfully cute is bein’ confirmed. Heh-heh-heh, somehow this makes me happy as if they were talkin’ ’bout me. I mean, she’s my girlfriend… I can’t wait to brag about it.

“What food do you like, Rir?”
“Mostly meat, I guess. Steak and such. I like it rare. If we’re talking about Japanese food, then Sushi.”

I looked like one thing that hadn’t changed even now was her preference for meat. Though she had added Sushi to that.

“Which do you prefer, Norway or Japan?”
“That’s hard to answer. I guess I prefer Japan for one reason.” She looked my way for just an instant.

So, that reason is me? Today I just can’t stop grinnin’ inwardly.

“Oh, what might that reason be?”
“Well, that’s a secret,” Rir replied, still in the same calm fashion as before.

She didn’t act super amicable, but did a good job answering the questions. A somewhat mysterious transfer student… that was how she probably appeared to those who didn’t know her circumstances.

“I heard that you’re really good at studying, Fún, but what about sports?”
“I am better at exercising than studying.”

Well, she’s originally a wolfkin.

The rubberneckers were oohing, and aahing whenever she was answering a question.

“Then, Fún, among the boys here, is there-”

Bing-bong-bang-bong!

Sanada’s inquiry was interrupted by the bell signaling the end of the 10-minute break. The students from other classes hurriedly returned to their classrooms when they heard that. Sanada and my other classmates who’d crowded around Rir also rushed back to their places.

“Alright~, class is starting now.” The classics teacher entered the room.

After finishing the ritual of standing up and bowing which preceded class, the teacher started to place course materials on the desk.

“Erm, Miss Rir Fún? Your textbooks haven’t arrived yet, right? Ask Hino to show you his.”
“Understood.”

We pushed our tables together1.

“Eh-heh-heh, please show me, Shuu,” she giggled.

She was just as always. Outwardly, she might seem calm and composed, but for me, she looked like a child wanting to be spoiled.

For the time being, I placed my classics textbook on the seam between our tables.

“Miss Fún, you can speak Japanese normally, right? I’m afraid I cannot speak English, so if you don’t understand something in Japanese, please ask Magarigi… Do you know about Japanese classics?”
“It should be fine.”
“Then, today, we’ll be looking at a passage from The Pillow Book2-”

“U-Uhm, with this, class is over… huh…” the teacher said, surprise still in their voice.

Was it because Rir had done so well in class despite it being a hard subject?

This teacher went by the system of having students raise their hands if they wanted to answer a question, but Rir had raised her hand at every single question. Trying to encourage her, the teacher then said things like “Do you understand it? Do you want to give it a try?”… and she had answered everything correctly.

It was funny to observe how the expressions of the teacher and our classmates changed every time Rir raised her hand and replied correctly.

Well… no matter how you slice it, she’s way too bright. Even if it ain’t on the level of Kanata, you can probably call her a prodigy3.

Footnotes:

  1. The original is 個別だった席にリルの机が繋がれる。 (“Rir’s table is connected to individual seat”). Either I’m missing something here, or there was supposed to be a second “For that reason, we had to push our tables together” sentence.
  2. The Pillow Book is from the 10th century and consists of observations and musings recorded by Sei Shōnagon during her time as court lady to Empress Consort Teishi.
  3. Ok, I guess this can no longer explained by language ability getting imparted during transfer.
