“The next group is made up of four D-Rank magic beasts, is it not? How should we deal with those?” Myuri asked, seemingly in high spirits.
After picking up the Child Dragons’ drops, we immediately moved on, only coming to a stop once the next group of magic beasts became visible.
“Let me think… Miss Lilo, how many Fire Cannons can you shoot off?”
“Uhm… four to five, I guess?”
“Then please use one of them. After Miss Myuri buffs you, obviously.”
Myuri quickly raised Lilo’s spellpower, quickness, and – likely remembering our talk earlier – her dexterity.
“Good… there goes high grade magic for the first time in my life…! Everyone, watch this!”
When she saw her three teammates nod, she got close enough to the group of enemies to create a magic circle there. Once she had reached a certain distance, a red circle appeared at the feet of the battle-ready magic beasts. It erupted.
“Woo-hoo~~!!” Lilo yelled excitedly.
Result-wise, three foes had perished, while the last one was on death’s door. Ruin finished off the heavily wounded magic beast.
“You did it, Lilo! That was amazing!”
“Yeah!”
Lilo beamed in apparent delight as Ruin praised her, while picking up the magic cores.
“Alright, we can move on… Right, Alim?” she asked me.
“Yes, you can! But stay vigilant. The next group will likely contain either a C-Rank foe, or even a C-Rank subspecies,” I cautioned them in advance.
I mean, it’s true. You can never be too careful.
We, the group of people leveling up, followed the straight road. We entered the part we hadn’t explored before. What came into view after slowly advancing… was a C-Rank Iron Golem and two D-Rank Wood Golems. Ruin and the others stopped their march with serious looks.
“Once you’ve defeated those, we’ll go back again. Is that fine with you?”
“Yes.”
“Then, for tactics… Miss Lilo, please shoot as many Fire Cannons as your remaining MP allows, aimed at the Iron Golem. Just aim at that single foe, alright? Don’t push yourself. Once it has been weakened enough, the other three can beat it down.”
“Okay~!” Lilo took a step forward. Then, she cast her spells. “Fire Cannon! Fire Cannon! Fire Cannon… Fire Cannon~~!!”
The golem was assaulted by four casts of high-grade magic. Though even when defeating monsters safely from a distance, that didn’t mean you were less tense.
When the smoke cleared from where her spells had struck, there were two golem corpses and one battered Iron Golem. Although she had aimed at only one enemy, the Wood Golems were also caught up in the spells. That was how these things went.
The Iron Golem lowered the arms it had used to guard against the attacks, its yellow eyes shone more brightly, and it turned towards Lilo. The three swordsmen stepped in front to engage it. The damage on the severely weakened golem steadily piled up – mostly due to Orgo’s heavy strikes imbued with the earth attribute – until it fell.
“*Huff*… *huff*… it was strong…” Ruin panted.
“This is the second C-Rank we defeated… they are strong, after all,” Orgo reflected.
“Hah… so, this was a C-Rank magic beast…” Tuhl murmured.
They said it was the second, did they only accept D-Rank requests after I met them? Well, that doesn’t matter now.
“…Please check your status screens. Mr. Ruin, how many levels did you and your friends go up?”
“…Three. We passed level 40 and went directly to 421.”
I think they were around level 32 back in Pipi Village. Even though the war and several other things happened… they’re only at 42. Sounds like they level a bit slow.
In another 20 to 25 levels, they’d probably be around C-Rank. Still, with just C- and D-Rank enemies, leveling would slow down from now on. Killing everything on this path up to this point only got them three levels2.
I conveyed my thoughts about it in a simple manner.
“Hah… hah… it does make me happy that we leveled up five times3 in a single day, but…” Ruin commented, “there’s still a long way to go… I always heard that it gets a lot harder once your personal rank goes from D to C… I guess it’s true…”
“Still, you cannot waver now! You will grow stronger for sure!” I tried to motivate them. “Use the time you have to the fullest! Keep at it!”
“That’s true!”
The eight of us left the dungeon again and returned to the magic room. It was to have them (mostly Lilo4, who’d used up the most MP) take a nap. Still, if we had to do this all the time, we’d be going nowhere fast, so I placed various enchantments on the pillows.
“Miss Myuri, before you go to sleep, could we decide what to do about your stats?”
“Of course, I do not mind.”
…To be honest, those two girls were likely the key to doing the dungeon repeatedly. I’d have to wrack my brain.
Footnotes:
- Hang on, they had to work this hard with four people at level 39, while Alim managed to solo a C-Rank at level 25? Something doesn’t add up here.
- It’s “two levels” in the original, but Ruin just said he gained three levels.
- He says “four times” in the original, but it should be five if they got two levels the first round and now three.
- The original is “Rir”. A typo, I assume.
