“Gah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, awesome… this is THE BEST, the absolute BEEEEEEEEST!! Gah-ha, THE BEST, THE B-B-B-B-B-BEST…!! Next, next-next-next-next-next-neeeeeext…”

Surtr created another magic circle, likely containing power similar to the black flames earlier, and pointed his hand at me, ready to fire it off.

“However… you’ll probably defend against that one, too… Gah-ha-ha,” he grumbled and then lowered his hand.

The Black God, who’d just been showing a smile of mad delight, suddenly turned dead serious, as if someone had dunked cold water on him.
Don’t tell me that earlier attack was as strong as he managed? And I defended against it…

“We can keep up our exchange, but… you’ll just ward it off… If you wretch were to go all out, I would lose for sure.”

His expression kept changing without much pause. Right now, he had what might be called a sorrowful smile on his face. Could he have grasped the difference in power between us?

“It’s frightening… but no matter how many SS-Rank spells I use, no attack will reach you. It’s a simple difference in stats. And it looks like magic can damage this body…”

So, my earlier guess was correct.

As Mika, Kanata, Sakura, and I still harbored some doubt at that sudden change and tried to keep our guard up, Surtr walked up to us, his sword still at the ready. He somehow looked as if he had given up.

His next words came as a slight shock.

“How many times did you use Reincarnation? How many thousands of magic beasts have you defeated? You are even using divine grade items… like Amritas and that sword. To begin with, why do you even have divine grade items? What did you do to obtain such power?”

This was the first time Mika and I heard the words “Reincarnation” and “divine grade” from someone who wasn’t from Earth.

I assumed he could’ve found out about my sword’s value by virtue of simply appraising it, but his mention of Reincarnation came as a surprise. It was a surprise, but on second thought he was an evil god who’d lived for eons and had the word “god” in his name, so it might be natural for him to know.

“Yep… well, I won’t answer that,” I replied.

The Black God, likely since he didn’t expect me to tell him, didn’t press the issue and continued talking.

“…As for stats. They max out at 999’999. At this point, MY own stats are several times higher than that, but yours are still superior.”

That was probably because I was wearing tons of items that raised my stats. I had even modified my everyday clothes to do that.

I was wearing rings on all my fingers, save for one where I planned to put my wedding ring, once I tied the knot with Mika. Then there were earrings, hair ornaments, belts on my tights, a choker, gloves, shoes, underwear… the list went on and on1.

At any rate, everything I wore raised my stats.

“That’s true,” I confirmed.

“…And the abilities of your sword; it can absorb a crazy amount of MP, right? I took the liberty to appraise it, but…” Surtr explained as he pointed at my sword. He looked as if it was completely baffling to him. “…I have no knowledge about that divine grade item. There is only a limited number of those in this world, so obviously us evil gods know all of them… we should… How. E. Ver! I have zero information about that sword of yours.

I see, that’s why he looked so confused.

“Well, that’s because I made it.”
“…!? Gah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Are you serious…? Ah, ah, ah, is this for real? Gah-ha-ha!!”

He started laughing again, as if I had cracked a joke.
All I told him was the truth. Well, that certainly confirms just how awesome divine grade items are.

“From what I know, you’ve just been living a normal life since facing off with Samaeyl! If you can make such a thing, you’ve probably also made Amritas as you pleased, right? While we were talking, I noticed that almost everything you’re wearing is raising your stats! Gah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! How abnormal! I‘d never have expected that!”

Not paying us any mind, Surtr continued talking at a speed that didn’t allow us to interject.

“Alright, in that case Armageddon’s instant death would’ve been meaningless, too. You can probably also drain MP with that sword… I see, then it’s also possible you had an item which made that doxy Samayel disappear, soul and all.”

He put his hand to his cheek, as if he was contemplating something.

…We probably should’ve sealed him while he was talking2.
When I had that thought, the air about Surtr suddenly changed.

“…I shouldn’t worry about winning any longer.”

He lowered the sword from his shoulder and put it away. Then, he intensified his grin. He somehow managed to make it look even more ominous.

I‘ve got no choice… Ragnarök!”

TL notes:
And Alim manages to get the second evil god to use their secret forbitten technique that might or might not be more than he bargained for.

This is the first time in the series we’re seeing a clash that isn’t settled in a single chapter. Either people complained about the short fights, or the author themselves decided to try something new. I’m not sure what to think of it myself. While it’s nice not to have everything end in a single attack, it’s just flinging bigger and bigger nukes at each other so far.

Several fights in volume one, especially the one against the Rainbow Emperor Dog, placed Alim in the inferior position, so he had to strategize and adapt. Here, none of this is present here. You could say Kanata fills that role, but instead of allowing him to grow through it, it’s merely used to show Alim’s superiority.

Footnotes:

  1. Again, for how gamelike Anazumu is, it’s both weird and extremely unbalanced that there’s no proper equipment slots.
  2. Yep, sounds like he learned nothing from his experience with Samayel and Mephistophales.
