The 10’000 yellow balls were crashing into Surtr one by one. Normally, it would’ve been complete impossible to see him among all the flashes, so I put on some special glasses to observe what was happening to the Black God.

“Gah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!”

Although some hit him, Surtr was cutting down most of the Thunderballs with his sword, which had the well-known name1 Lævateinn.

…What’s going on with that sword?

Normally, lighting coursing trough one’s body would cause paralysis… no, even assuming evil gods were comparable to final bosses and thus immune to status effects, I’d expected his sword to explode, like mine was melted by the Fireball.

I got curious, so I appraised it.

I see, so Surtr can fuse it with any swords he creates. In addition, there’s Shuu’s (and now Surtr’s) cheat skill – the one Sakura told us about – “God of Fire”.

This skill synergized with the summoned fire sword (likely from an SS-Rank skill) which was then fused with Lævateinn. As a consequence, although that was just an assumption, Lævateinn was strengthened to at least the level of a lower end divine grade sword.

“Big Bro…! Let me back you up…”

It looked like Kanata and the others had noticed the Black God being hurt by the barrage of Thunderballs, although only slightly. Still, I raised my hand, signaling them that there was no need.

“Why not…?”
“Ah-ha-ha, I still haven’t gone all out, you see,” I replied to Kanata’s question.

It was the truth. Still, I might not manage to win. Premonitions like that might come true… or they might not. Nevertheless, it didn’t change the fact I was fighting the strongest foe I had ever faced.

Why, I’m feeling… a bit excited? When was the last fight that had me this emotional…? Was it with Samaeyl?
No, the fight with her was over way too quickly, it was before that. Back when I was still weak… during the fight with the Rainbow Emperor Dog. It might’ve been then.

“Ah, ah, ah! That was too simple… you know?” Surtr commented with Lævateinn on his shoulder.

He didn’t seem bothered by his body being covered in wounds by the maybe 3% Thunderballs2 that managed to hit him. All those wounds disappeared in the blink of an eye, likely since he was casting Restoration Magic.

“…So, it was useless, after all.”
“Indeed. Still, it was quite something, you know? From how things are going, it’s MY turn now, right?” Surtr told me with a smile, not the disgusting grin from earlier, but a hearty, pleasant one, like the ones Shuu displayed when he was enjoying a game.

The Black God held out one of his hands and a reddish-black magic circled appeared.

I‘d like to continue our exchange with Emission spells… From how it looks, both ME and you are still miles from hitting our limits. This is a performance, you see? The current all-out skirmish is over. This is round two of our full-power destruction contest… come on!”

The magic swelled. It shone. Finally, it fired.
The roaring blaze, reddish-black like the magic circle had been, flew at us… no, it was solely aimed at me.

Heh-heh-heh-heh, at any rate… the one thing I’m glad about at this point is that Shuu’s the one who got possessed. It’s what made this situation possible.

My favorite videogame – although for the last half a year or so I had prioritized Mika – was the third entry of the “Dragonar Story” series. In fact, this was the last entry that I was able to play. The last boss in that game was the former best friend of the protagonist… and said friend had been possessed.

This is exactly the same situation…!
I’m not saying that I’m craving thrilling fights like Surtr. Still… although I can’t say it out loud, I couldn’t wish for a better opponent than Shuu.

I created a large number of shields to defend against the black flames. They had fire resistance, magic absorption, and magic weakening effects. The flames burned those shields with this combination of effects to nothing and closed in on me, their power weakening just a tiny bit for every shield they consumed. The resulting clash was both larger scale and flashier that the one between our Ball spells earlier.

Still, this magic’s power wasn’t anything half-baked. It was an attack that brought utter destruction, leaving nothing behind in its wake. The only one who might take this attack and remain standing was Surtr with his body made of fire. The spell probably had the power to comfortably level two or three countries.

“Ah!?” Mika yelled.

The last… of the 500 shields had been destroyed. Her reaction was inevitable.

[It’s fine, my dear,] I ended up cracking a joke.

If this hit me, it surely would end poorly, but…

“Gah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, full-power magic contests are great, aren’t they~~~?”

…I cancelled it out with a Thunder Emission.

Surtr was showing that disgusting grin again. You could tell from his look that he truly enjoyed himself.

Footnotes:

  1. The original ありきたりな名前 (“common/ordinary name”) seems a bit weird, so I’m not sure if it’s intended or a typo. Maybe he means that the name is commonly used in fiction?
  2. That’s still 300 Thunderballs, each of them powerful enough to oneshot a SS-Rank subspecies. Just how crazy is Surtr’s magic resistance?
