“Here I go~!”

The ball of flames Surtr had shot off approached Kanata. It disappeared, having been counteracted by darkness magic.

“Hmph.”

However, this was then cancelled out by another ball of flames. This back and forth with both weapons and magic had gone on for a long time

Kanata was thinking. Just how could he seal the Black God…?

The evil god’s powers greatly elevated his hosts original strengths.

Then, like he had changed the effect of King Loukis’s certain death skill to turn the target into ash1 after killing it, he could evolve skills by adding effects related to fire. Kanata assumed the Black God had used something similar to melt Rir’s ice.

And now his fire magic turned out impossible powerful… and that was with him holding back. Kanata’s own SS-Rank magic didn’t have enough firepower.

Additionally, Kanata assumed that on top of melting anything it touched, Surtr’s body could turn into flames. This guess was due to the flamelike flickers being visible on parts of Shuu’s body after he had melted Kanata’s summoned spears.

Furthermore, since Shuu was the one possessed, he couldn’t just send him into space2. He had to render Surtr powerless without using physical attacks, on top of cutting off the skill that let him melt down objects, before he could stab him with Gungnir. With such low odds of success, Kanata was racking his brains once more, when Surtr spoke.

“You’re still not going full boil… Are you holding back since you know the owner of this body? …Right, I just thought of something to make you go all out.” Surtr grinned at Kanata, as if he had a wonderful idea. “If you can’t entertain ME any better than this, then I‘ll go… and kill that cute little girlfriend of yours… Gah-ha-ha… I wonder, if I use magic that can destroy the closest two to three countries… will that be enough to get her?”

Those words made Kanata open his eyes, and they echoed in his head. He chewed on his lips.

“I won’t let you… never!”
“In that case, entertain ME, will you? If you don’t… I‘ll turn her into ash… just like that wolf girl!”

Surtr suddenly picked up some soil from the ground and squeezed it strongly. Then, a spark appeared in the palm of his hand. When he opened it again, the burnt soil fell to the ground in flakes.

“Like this… see?”
“…!”

Kanata invoked the simple spear summoning magic he had made earlier, and a dignified looking weapon appeared in his hand.

“Graaaaaaaaaaaah!” he shouted with all his power and a complete lack of composure.

The same moment, he threw the magic spear at high speed, adding various effects to it. It flew at Surtr at a velocity that long seemed the have passed the speed of sound, piercing his body…

“Oh?”

He couldn’t pull it back out. In the center of the body, which should’ve been pierced by the spear, a passage of fire had opened for the weapon. It was as if Surtr resided no longer on the same plane as reality3.

Furthermore, although it had only touched him for an instant, the spear’s tip had melted. Continuing on its path, the weapon flew away at high speed.

“…Was that it?”
“N-No, there’s still more!”

A large number of magic circles formed very close to Surtr. Each of them was from a powerful skill Kanata possessed.

“How will you… deal with this?”

A barrage of magic that might destroy a country was unleashed all at once. Spears flew, black magic roared… it seemed clear.

“…Oh-ho.”

Still, Surtr stood there calmly. He immediately drew Lævateinn and had it absorb the magic fire sword Muspell, which was summoned by an SS-Rank skill. The next moment, Lævateinn flared up and the Black God swung it at the magic circles.

A single slash… just that one slash was all it took to destroy them and burn them out. All of Kanata’s magic circles were blown away with roaring noise, high speeds, and terrible wind pressure.

That one slash didn’t stop at erasing the magic, it severed half the island. And it still continued onward, splitting the ocean in half.

“How did you like that…? This was ME going all out, you see?”

Propping the glowing Lævateinn against his shoulder, Surtr looked at Kanata proudly. After being baffled momentarily by the excessive power of that one attack just now, the boy immediately regained his senses. Only…

“What will be your next move?”
“…”

He didn’t have a next move. While currently neither his own nor his foe’s attacks would find their mark… he no longer had that luxury when Sakura was targeted.

“Gah… Aaaaaaah!!”

He summoned several powerful spears again and started throwing them. Using his Stýra Rúm skill in conjunction, he also sent them towards Surtr on various trajectories, making them pass through the Black God’s fiery body. As a spear was passing through him, a magic circle appeared on it.

“Eat this…!”

Before he had any time to swing his blade, Surtr was showered in magic. It happened once… twice… three times, and so on. It repeated for each of the many spears.

Once a spear had pierced Surtr and continued on its trajectory, Kanata pulled it back and made it pierce the Black God again… invoking the magic once more.

“How did you like that?”

He looked at where Surtr should be with a face drenched in sweat due to nervousness and impatience. The place was covered in smoke.

Kanata tried to sense magic power. He was lost for words.

“…Well, that was easy.”

What emerged from the smoke was the truly tenacious evil god. He was grinning. It seemed as if he was ridiculing Kanata’s efforts.

“As long as I‘m constantly casting healing magic… I can endure it, you see? Fighting with you… was a lot of fun! The best fight I ever had! Still, I am getting bored!”

Even with that new knowledge, Kanata was trying to think of a possible next move. Surtr ignored him and slowly raised his hand. He pointed to the sky.

“Look up, Kanata.”

Just as he had been told, Kanata raised his gaze.

Dazzling. It seemed to burn his eyes.
Of course, if there were 13 suns in the sky, the result would be dazzling.

I will scatter these… all over the world… though mainly where Sakura is. It will be a grand spectacle! Alright, where is she right now… hm?”

Surtr dropped the hand he had raised and suddenly stopped grinning. He had felt something incredible close to Sakura. What he had felt was a truly staggering amount of magic power.

Kanata not only ignored what Surtr was doing but also teleported the 12 fake suns into space while he had the chance.

Even so, the Black God was laughing. It seemed he lost all interest in the boy. He appeared contented.

“Gah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Did they finally arrive…? The little main dishes!!”

TL notes:
So, Surtr was essentially killing time while waiting for Alim and Mika to arrive, which Dace likely told him would happen. With him being almost immune to physical attacks and extremely resistant to magic, could this be the first fight where Alim can’t just settle everything in a single, impossibly fast attack?

Footnotes:

  1. The original is 肺になる (“turn into a lung”). Seeing that both 肺 (“lung”) and 灰 (“ash”) are pronounced as hai/はい, I assume that’s a typo.
  2. Why not? The chances of him beating Surtr without killing Shuu seem very low, and the vacuum does a splendid job of preserving a corpse.
  3. So, the guy’s pretty much a fire elemental? Not a good match at all for someone using darkness magic and a spear.
