Once he heard Surtr’s enthusiastic shout, Kanata quickly used teleportation to take some distance.
“Gah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!! I‘ll go first!!” Surtr yelled and aimed his arm at the distant Kanata.
That instant, a large number of Fireballs – beginner magic – appeared… Each of them was as large or even larger than a human.
“Now, how will you deal with that, Kanata? Choke on them~!”
He shot off the huge number of ultra-large Fireballs. Kanata didn’t try to avoid the abnormal balls of flame and instead looked at them while standing still. The fireballs closed in on the boy regardless.
The moment the first mass of fire was about to hit, it vanished. It wasn’t just the one, all of them disappeared successively once they got close to Kanata. Surtr watched that scene with a grin.
“You dealt with them…”
“It’s my turn now… right?”
“Sure, come at ME!”
Kanata chanted magic. When he finished, a large number of spears emerged. He summoned such a large amount, it seemed a waste of time to try counting them. These spears encircled Surtr from all directions.
“So… is that it?”
“…Well, just watch what happens.”
Kanata snapped his fingers. Although that gesture wasn’t necessary for the skill, the spears took it as their signal to fly towards Surtr all at once at ultra-speed.
However, the Black God also displayed no intention to avoid them. While there were too many spears to follow them individually, they certainly seemed about to pierce him. Still, Kanata got the feeling that the attack didn’t reach his foe.
Several seconds later, all the summoned weapons had finished making their way to Surtr. What remained made it look as if a shower of spears had fallen.
Amidst the devastation stood someone with his upper body exposed, well-tempered by daily training, and, same as when Loukis had been possessed, with hair as white as burnt-out charcoal, and his whole eyeballs bright red like flames. All his skin was pitch-black – fitting for someone called the Black God.
On that black skin, there were reddish-orange vein-like lines running, and his fingernails were a deep crimson. And all over his body (which was patently no longer human) for example on his black shoulders and parts of his abdomen, there were flame-like flickers. This was how Shuu now looked1.
“Heh… That just now was great, you know? Well, I ended up burning all of them!!” Surtr declared with another grin.
The teeth Kanata could see from his position were the normal white.
“That’s great, right…? All good… truly great~~~~!! You are strong, and I am strong, too. This is exactly what I wanted, a thrilling fight. And winning it… winning it will make MY blood boil~!”
Contrasting with Surtr who shouted like a lunatic, Kanata’s eyes shone as he put on the eyepatch made by his beloved childhood friend and covered it with one hand.
“Indeed… I feel the same, Black God Surtr…! However, you, fiend, are an incarnation of evil. I, on the other hand, am the jet-black messenger… There is no way for me to lose!”
“Is that so…? Gah, gah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! That’s good, great even… I don’t mind that at all. So, I wonder, how will you deal with this?”
They weren’t just at his feet… magic circles unfolded, as if they were encircling the boy from each direction. All those magic circles were for Fire Emission.
“Try to get out of this…”
With a boom, beams of fire were shot off. However, or rather as expected, Kanata used his teleportation to escape the fiery prison.
“Yep, I knew you’d do that.”
Surtr stretched out his hand towards Shuu’s sword, Lævateinn, gripped its hilt roughly, and propped it up against his back. A clanging sound echoed. The same moment, Kanata had appeared behind Surtr and stabbed his summoned spear at the Black God. The latter had defended against it2.
“Grah!” Surtr swung his sword wildly.
Still, Kanata anticipated that reprise and teleported away once more.
The Black God suddenly pushed his right arm forward. Another magic circle appeared.
“Can you avoid this one?”
It was a warped shape formed from a great blaze. What the Black God had chanted was the spell Matchless Fire on a scale that defied common sense, which scorched the surface of the island even further, as it made its way towards Kanata. A single attack that was very different in power from the earlier Fireballs… It found its mark, but disappeared right before finally actually reaching the boy.
The ocean’s surface suddenly rose up and exploded.
“Oh, no!? All those poor little fishies ended up dead? Well, not like I care.”
“That might be so. Still, I don’t mind it much, either.”
“Gah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha, shall we continue our fight to the death? I knew it, you are the best among the sages I have fought so far.”
TL notes:
So far, the battle between those two looks like the classic “guy who can dodge everything” versus “guy who can tank any attack you throw at him”. They likely both need MP for that, and with Surtr boosting the stats of his host, it might not look good for Kanata in the long run.
