“The evil god that appeared seems to be Surtr, the Black God,” the king explained ambiguously.

Well, all I know is that there are three evil gods, so that doesn’t tell me much.

“As for where he appeared, it was in the country of the holy tree, Yggdrasil.”

I doubted my ears.

Yggdrasil is that place, isn’t it? The one trying to start a war with this country. So, is the king saying that right before they went to war, an evil god showed up?

“This Yggdrasil is the place you talked about before, right, Your Majesty? The country plotting to start a war with Mephilad?”
“The very same.”

It’s their fault that the special level-up training with Karua and Ruin had been cancelled, you know.

The king leaned back in his chair and continued.

“…For the past few days, I’ve received word about the state of Yggdrasil’s war preparations from a covert agent1.”

A covert agent… that’s a spy, right?

Apparently, there weren’t any of these in Mephilad. From what he said, both Thul and Karuna used their status screen viewing powers to check for people working for other countries2. He also told us that in the past, they meticulously managed their personnel, ensuring there would be no foreign spies or such.

I wonder, did the knight commander handle that, or was it the minister? I think one of them mentioned that proudly, when we were having dinner at some point. Right, it was the minister.

The HR management in this country must be rock solid, for no information at all about my Amritas and the war to leak to hostile nations, and for the friendly nations to send so many fighters to the war.

Though I have absolutely~ no clue about politics. I’ve become a girl, and my job is to be an idol.
Huh, you’re saying that’s no excuse? …Who cares. At any rate, I should listen to the king.

“However, while there was a fair amount of information about them planning to go to war, there haven’t been any preparations for it, and neither the populace nor the army seem to be aware of what is about to happen.”
“In that case, maybe the information was wrong or a misinterpretation?”

The king shook his head at Mika’s guess.

“That country… no, their royal family, the Zeggrays, have prepared in a different way… They summoned a being able to destroy a country by itself3.”

I see, this tracks. So, in other words…

“Are you saying, they are trying to plan to use Surtr as a weapon?” I asked.

“Indeed. Regrettably, I just received that information earlier… It looks like the evil god has already been resurrected. In the past, it would’ve been readily available, but in the last few years, it has suddenly become much harder to obtain such information… much to our detriment.”

Woah… In other words, Mika and I need to eliminate this Surtr, don’t we? And right now.
They’re coming after this country, and it’s not like I’m all that averse to vanquishing evil gods, but… if I’m honest, it’s a huge pain.

“Understood… Then we’ll leave immediately to defeat-”
“Ah… could you wait for a moment?”

The king closed his eyes. It was how people focused when they received a message.

“…I just got new information. It appears the Black God proved disobedient. He killed Yggdrasil’s king, leaving not even a single trace.”

S-Seriously? I guess that’s him getting his just desserts…

So, does that mean Yggdrasil will be destroyed soon? Even so, don’t they have hero-like fighters over there, like Mr. Herrell the former hero, and me?

“W-What will happen now?” I stammered.
“Currently, a group of people called sages, similar to the hero here, seem to have moved the Black God to another place to face off with him there.”

So, there is someone, after all. In that case, maybe we’re not needed?

“So, what should we do?”

“Hrm, I’d love to tell you to go home, but I’ve got a bad premonition… Alim, though you saved us with your Amritas, there is a possibility the Black God possesses a similar power to the one that sent us all to our graves… Assuming the sages fail, it would cause issues if Surtr came here.”

That’s certainly true. Even though I was able to defeat Samaeyl more easily than expected, she ended up killing everyone, including Mika.
The possibility that Surtr has that kind of outrageous power seems rather high.

“Understood. Then shall we go there, Your Majesty?”
“Yeah. We’ll support the sages,” Mika agreed.

When he heard those words, it looked like some of the tension left the king’s face.

“My apologies. We will owe you a great deal once again, Alim, Mika. I shall make sure to reward you. I’d prefer to send the other SSS-Rankers with you, but-”
“No, we should be plenty.”
“Is that so? Hrm, you certainly might have ended our previous war all by yourselves,” the king mused as he stood up. “Therefore, go, heroes!”
“Yes!”
“Yes! …Oh, could I ask one more thing?” Mika questioned.
“What is it?”

I wonder, was there something unclear in what he told us?

“For the time being, information about the powers of those sages we will collaborate with… might be too much to ask for, but could you at least tell us their names… and the thing that evil god was originally sealed in?”

I see, I completely forgot that part. Especially knowing what the Black God was sealed in is important.

Mika’s question seemed normal enough, but what the king told us next came as a real shock.

“Indeed, the Black God was originally sealed in a spear called Gungnir. Once you get there, you should ask for a book with a drawing of it, so you’re able to reproduce it. Then, the names of the sages appear to be Kanata, Sakura, and Shuu. I’m told, they are from another world-”

TL notes:
This chapter confirms that the events in the Yggdrasil chapters still haven’t quite caught up to the Mephilad part, but we seem to be getting close. Also, Alim and Mika finally learned about the others’ presence in Anazumu and we get a bit of a preview about what’ll happen in Yggdrasil next.

Footnotes:

  1. The king uses 隠者 (“hermit”, “recluse”) in the original, but if you just look at the Kanjis’ meaning, this can also be “hidden person”. It’s possible he uses it either as a euphemism or code, but the English “hermit” doesn’t have that added meaning, so I went with “covert agent” instead.
  2. I wonder how that works. Do you get country specific titles with that occupation?
  3. The original doesn’t clarify that a single being was summoned, so this could also refer to the sages, who definitely have the power to destroy a country single-handedly. Though context makes it clear he means Surtr.
