Did he just say “20’000 soldiers”…?! What do I do, just how am I supposed to do this?
Nothin’ to do but try.

“Uhm, can I start?” I asked the king.

Huh…? Dace next to him is holding some spear, but… since when did she have that thing? Meh, whatever.

“Yes, you may,” the king replied.

Let’s do it, then.

I raised one of my hands. There was no special reason for it. Then, I chanted the name of one of my SS-Rank skills, Final Sun1.

In any case, all my SS-Rank skills had the option to limit their effects to designated enemies2, so any of them would’ve worked. For now, I decided to go with this one.

As for those designated enemies… I’ll limit it to soldiers created by magic. It shouldn’t damage anythin’ else that way.

With these conditions, I fired off Final Sun. Our surroundings, which were slightly dim due to the mountain’s shadow, grew extremely bright.

“This is…” Heimdall murmured, as he looked up.

It was the first time I used this magic, so I also wanted to see how it looked. I turned my face upwards.
There was a second sun. And it was falling from the sky, aiming straight at us.

I set it up in a way so its impact radius is small3 and there will be no shockwaves or anythin’, so it shouldn’t cause any secondary disasters… I’m sure it’ll be fine, probably.

As for the reactions of the people around me: Kanata had a somewhat happy gleam in his eyes, while Sakura and the SSS-Rankers4 had blank looks on their faces. Rir was gazing at me in admiration.

The king and Dace, the most crucial people for this demonstration, had disappeared unnoticed. All that remained was the spear, which had been stabbed into the ground.

And close the us, the ball of flames was approaching…

“This is it for me… After seeing that, I am convinced that even if it had been 100’000 soldiers, they’d have been finished with that one attack just now,” Heimdall commented.
“I’m opting out of this one…” Thor decided. “These sages, they’re terrifying.”

I thought I was no match for ’em but looks like I was wrong and Rir got it right.

With the sound of clapping, the King and Dace reappeared from some distance away.

Huh…? The color is the same, but I’m pretty sure the king’s trousers are a different fabric than before, ain’t they? Eh, that doesn’t matter now.

“I-It appears your power is sufficient, S-Sage.”

Ain’t his voice tremblin’ a little?

Moving on, Dace addressed everyone as she pulled out the spear.

“You did well. As for his power… Little old me would say it is on par with Kanata and Sakura. Let us head back.”

Thus, the measurement of my power came to an end.

“You may go home,” the king told us, right after we’d arrived back at the castle, and he’d thrown himself onto his throne.

In the carriage, Dace had told me that I’d normally be promoted to SSS-Rank, but because I was a sage, this wasn’t possible at present. Instead, they’d supply me with money, so I wouldn’t have to work for a while. It wasn’t like I wanted to work that much, so I agreed to that part, but considering we had enough money already, I refused the offer of funds.

“We’ll be off, then.”
“If we need anything from you, we will notify you,” the king told us. “Until then, you can stand by.”

For now, we bowed our heads to him and left the castle, with the same people who’d greeted us5 seeing us off. On that note, the two SSS-Rankers had gotten off the carriage and gone home right after we’d arrived at the castle.

Rir, Kanata, Sakura, and I returned to our high-class condo and parted in front of our apartments. As a consequence, I was currently alone with Rir.

“Woof. I… I was so nervous~…!” she exclaimed as she let herself sink into the sofa.

I was also tired and sat down next to her.

“Same here.”
“Woof. But you’re just as amazing as expected, Shuu. I think you’re the strongest in this world.”
“Nah… I’m pretty sure Kanata is stronger, y’know.”

I mean, he is Ayumu’s little brother… I don’t think he’d do thousands of rounds through a dungeon like Ayumu, but the guy is smart, so I’m sure he’d come up with somethin’.

“At any rate, I was prepared to be turned away at the gate, but… they let me into the castle without any issues.”
“That’s apparently the rule when it comes to acknowledgin’ adventurers. Still, he kept treatin’ you like a slave, even though you aren’t one. Next time, I’ll give him a piece…”

I’m still a bit cross about that stuff. I mean, I’ve already released her from slavery.

But Rir shook her head.

“I don’t worry about that at all, you see. From my perspective, I would’ve been happy to stay your slave, Shuu.”

Now that she mentions it, she did tell me somethin’ along these lines when she gave me her Proof of Loyalty. But ain’t it different now?

“It’s not the same. We’re in a relationship now… right?”
“Yeah…” She leaned against me. “Shuu… do you… love me?”
“‘Course I do.”

As I told her that, she fell silent and pulled me into a strong embrace.
She’s soft… and unlike when we first met, she feels very warm.

TL notes:
Dropping a sun onto an army certainly does sound like an effective way to fight. At least that should put Shuu’s doubts about his powers to rest.

A huge issue for all the protagonists in this story is that they gain their power mainly by fighting weakish enemies that die in a single attack, so they never get a chance to properly test out their skills. The SS-Rank stuff is potent enough to permanently alter geography, so it’s somewhat understandable that they don’t just throw that around willy-nilly, but at least for weapon skills you’d expect them to spar with each other to get a feel for their power.

Footnotes:

  1. In chapter 301, it is called ファイナル・サン (“Final Sun”), while it’s ラスト・サン (“Last Sun”) here. I opted to go with “Final Sun”.
  2. Seeing how insane SS-Rank skills are, it makes sense for that to be a standard feature.
  3. The original is 範囲はせまめに. This is most likely a typo and supposed to be 範囲は狭めに (“narrow down the range”).
  4. The original is その他大勢 (“the many others”). It might mean the summoned soldiers, but why would he care about their reaction? Maybe the author forgot there’s only 7 people there?
  5. The original is 入ってきた時と同じ人 (“same person/people from the time we entered”). This could mean that old butler or the gate guards. It might also mean that Dace went with them up to the gates.
