“…Damn it all…”

Loukis was in a poor mood.

“What’s wrong, Your Majesty? Are you sulking?” the Black God, from within Gungnir which Dace was holding, called out to the king.
“I’m not, today was simply the worst.”

His brows were creased, his teeth grinding, and his fists clenched.

“First, Dace’s prediction was off. I’m extremely angry because of that.
“…I profoundly apologize once more.”

Still holding the spear, Dace bowed her head deeply. Loukis scrutinized that sight for a while, but after seemingly getting sick of it, moved his gaze elsewhere. Dace finally raised her head again.

“Next… a slave from the outside world came to my castle.”
“…That’s true.”
“Apparently, that fire user sage freed her… but if you ask me, all beastfolk are slaves.”
“It is exactly how you say.”

Loukis saw slaves as filthy things. He had inherited that way of thinking from his father, the former king.

“And finally… these sages… they’ve gotten way too strong, curse them! How am I supposed to control them if they are like that!? All three of them are monsters! Hey, Black God, Dace, what am I supposed to do with them? Tell me!!”

Loukis’ whole body was shaking violently in a mix of rage and fear. Dace and Surtr, on the other hand, seemed unconcerned.

“Well, I can steal the body of someone who flies into a rage1, you know? I can control any of them you want.”
“That’s… that’s certainly true, but…”

Loukis held some doubts about how Surtr described his power. Without paying it any mind, the evil god continued.

I‘m pretty sure that’s the reason Dace had that prophecy about you getting your skill ready.”
“Ah… right, that must be it! I see, ha-ha! You’re right, you’re absolutely right!”
“By the way…”

Loukis, who felt the pressure from Surtr grow after the latter muttered that, balled his fists more tightly.

“What… what is it?”
I am… close to my resurrection2.”
“I-Is that true!?”
“…My foretelling said so, too.”

For an instant, Loukis seemed scared of Surtr, but that fear immediately changed to elation and he jumped up from his chair vigorously, not even trying to contain his excitement.

“In that case, the day… the day for our war is close!”
“Wait a moment. We first have to discuss which sage I will take over.”
“Hrm. You’re not wrong. Which one will you take, then?”

Loukis sat back down in his chair.

“To begin with, that Sakura girl won’t do at all. I don’t make a habit of possessing women,” Surtr explained, and then added a “I’m different from that trollop Samaeyl3 in a small voice, which only Dace could hear.

“So, it’s either Kanata or Shuu… On that note, do you know what attribute I specialize in, Your Majesty?”
“You’re called Black God, so… darkness?”
“Wrong! You don’t know anything, do you…? The ‘black’ in Black God is what remains after the fire has burned out! It’s fire, fire, I tell you!” Surtr exclaimed, growing more and more agitated. “It’s obviously the fire attribute, you understand? Enhancing the existing abilities of whoever I possess isn’t all I do. I control flames and burn everything to a crisp… get it? Or rather, that is MY main power.”

As they listened to him, Dace was smiling while Loukis was left openmouthed. After the king had regained his calm, he asked another question.

“That means Shuu, right? So, how will we make him angry?”
“According to the foretelling I got-”

From that point on, Dace sent the information as messages4. It was for the sake of caution, even though she had perfectly soundproofed the room with magic.

“Understood… In that case, we need to make sure that 11 days from now, the war has already begun… with the Mephilad Kingdom. Ha… ha-ha-ha, ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!!” Loukis yelled, full of excitement.

Before he spoke those words, Dace had deliberately undone the soundproofing, making sure the king wouldn’t notice. Thus, his voice leaked outside the throne room and ended up reaching someone standing in front of the doors.

That someone stealthily left his post and contacted the Mephilad Kingdom – his true employer – telepathically.

Dace had been ordered by Loukis to put away Gungnir in its storage room.

“Hey, will this work?” Surtr asked her.
“Yes, I’m sure.”

She gently placed the spear onto its pedestal.

“At any rate, that king proves to be a fool to the very end. Doesn’t he notice we’re using him?”
“Well, that’s how he is. He’ll be dead soon, anyway… We should simply stick to the plan.”

Dace sat down and continued her conversation with the spear for a bit longer…

TL notes:
Another look at the antagonists. It surely comes as no surprise that Dace and Surtr are playing Loukis, seeing how much of a moron he is. He more and more proves to be a perfect example of “stupid evil” and is clearly self-destructing at this point, so it likely won’t need much from Dace and Surtr to seal his fate.

I love Surtr’s outburst in the middle when he gets completely sick and tired of how damn stupid the king is.

Footnotes:

  1. So, unlike Samaeyl, all he needs is someone to be angry to posses them, instead of relying on a specific bloodline? I guess it evens out seeing the Demon God had all the demons for support while Surtr is on his own.
  2. The original here is そろそろ復活ちけェわ, and I’m seriously lost on what this grammar is supposed to be. The ち after 復活 might be from the shortened version of してしまう (“do completely/accidentally”), but that would be either ちまう or ちゃう. It’s clear from context what it’s supposed to mean, but the grammar makes no sense at all.
  3. The original is カマ野郎なサマイエイル (“the ga̲y ba̲stard Samaeyl”). I changed it since information from a later chapter contradicts it.
  4. Does that mean Surtr also has access to the status screen (assuming you need that for messages)? Or does she only send them to Loukis since Surtr is in on the plan already?
