The fight at the turret took down most of the enemies, dictating the pace for the following fight.

Now the only threats remaining were the enemy’s commander and the one pulling the strings behind the curtain.

With things calming down around the central fort, they crossed the drawbridge across the final moat… and then bulldozed their way through the double stacked iron doors, barely noticing the few enemies that remained.

With that, they found themselves in a large courtyard, overgrown with plants except for the paved paths to walk on.

There was a parade ground in a corner, surrounded by overgrown grass and weeds…and standing in that courtyard was also a giant knight, around five meters tall.

His body was clad in full armor of an ominous black hue. The inside of his helmet seemed to be filled with pure darkness, making it impossible to see his face, only his crimson eyes glowed from within. From what they had heard so far, this strange knight was the leader of the Death Knights, meaning he too was undead… yet the way he stood was almost majestic.

“Is that..?”
*”…Yes, his body has been twisted by that accursed devil, but there’s no mistaking him. He’s the Undead King…and my lord, Garland III.”*

The Undead King seemed to react to Alberich’s words as he raised his face to look at Crim’s group.

*”…THAT…THAT VOICE…IS THAT YOU, ALBERICH?”*
*”Yes, milord. Even in death, I’ve come to serve you one last time. I’ll release you from this plight.”*
*”RELEASE…ME? THERE’S NO NEED FOR THAT. FOR AS LONG AS MY BODY STANDS, I SHALL PROTECT THIS LAND, THIS EMPIRE…”*

His voice boomed with a staunch determination.

“…I am sorry to say, but the empire thou claimest to defend existeth no longer.”

Crim spoke with a monotone voice, which made the Undead King’s body twitch, and Alberich averted his eyes.

“Times have changed, Garland III. Thy age lies more than a century past. In life, three generations of thy lineage wouldst have come and gone.”

The Undead King stood silent as Crim calmly tried to once again explain that to him.

“Regardless of that, the empire did fall thirty years past, and by none other than the will of the people.”

Everyone fell silent. The Undead King stood completely still, making it impossible for Crim to tell what he was thinking. But as cruel as the truth was, she felt he needed to hear it.

“I can assure thee, thy duty was fulfilled the very day the empire drew its final breath… So rest easy now.”

*”I…I DON’T BELIEVE IT.”*The Undead King muttered, his voice ringing like the sorrowful voices from the depths of hell. “SILENCE, NO MORE…I DON’T BELIEVE IT. I’LL PROTECT…THE EMPIRE…THE PEOPLE!!”

He let out a throat-rending shout, rising to his full height and swinging an enormous sword that looked more like a lump of iron on a handle. The blade, three meters long, was engulfed in black flames, as though fueled by pure malice.

The swing alone unleashed a wave of heat that surged through the courtyard, scorching the skin of everyone nearby. At the same time, an ominous chant began to echo all around them, sending a chill deep into their bones.

Despite that, something about it all appeared more sorrowful than terrifying, prompting Crim to keep talking.

“…What an ironic and cruel fate. ’Twas thine own hands that turned this citadel into a land of the undead, and yet thy loyalty and devotion remain unshaken.”
*”…That’s who he was. A great lord, always thinking of the empire and its people.”*

Alberich brought that up with a melancholy voice. It was painfully obvious that even in this state, he still held Garland III in great esteem.

“…Let’s do this. We have to give him respite.”

Elmir tapped Crim’s shoulder and then walked forward.

“Mhm, and so we shall. Wilt thou serve as our main tank?”
“Yeah, it’s the least I can do here.”

Elmir nodded at Crim and then looked straight at the Undead King, unsheathing his sword. His usual carefree demeanor was gone as he focused entirely on the task at hand. Crim nodded back at him, then readied her own weapon, calling forth a black scythe.

“Elmir and Silver Wings will stand in front, directly facing the enemy. All close range attackers, join us Lua Cheia and the Black Wolf Pack. Everyone else, keep a distance and watch the surroundings as we fight, and attack whenever there’s a convenient opening.”

There was a short grace period before the fight started, which Crim utilized to dish out orders in quick succession to set up their battle formation.

“Hinagiku, thy Blue Fire should prove most effective against him, so focus on serving as the main damage dealer. Freya, do tend to everyone’s wounds as needed, but make certain to keep Hinagiku in good health above all.”
“Leave it to me, Master!”
“Mhm, you can rely on me!”

With most of the orders given out, Crim held out her right hand, making her crimson coat flutter.

“As the leader of our United Kingdoms, I now command thee, unsheathe thine swords and make ready for battle… Our foe is none other than the Undead King, Garland III!”

The sharp sounds of swords being unsheathed overlapped each other, while Crim pointed her scythe at the Undead King with a rallying cry.

“This land of the undead…this citadel of loyal knights… We shall free it from its lengthy decay, and make it ours!!”
