More than half an hour passed in the blink of an eye since the fight with the Undead King Garland III began.
By now his HP bar had been reduced to 20%, entering the red zone. But no matter how relentless the attacks on him were, how many arrows rained down, and how much magic burst on him, his strength did not seem to wane, making justice to his name as the Undead King.
*”…GHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!”*
A powerful roar rang out, hitting everyone like a gust of wind, which was followed by a circular slash that spread through the whole arena.
At the same time, dark orbs began to spawn randomly around the arena, each one pulling nearby players toward it. Despite that, some players chose to willingly jump into the orbs on purpose.
Touching an orb inflicted heavy damage, but once it completely absorbed a player it disappeared. Because of that, it was safer for the tankier players to take the hit and erase the orbs before the weaker rear-line members could get caught in them.
Still, that was just the beginning of a chain attack, as the boss swung his sword relentlessly against Elmir, the main attacker.
“How vexing! Canst thou still hold on, Elmir?!”
“Yes, no problem…here!”
He replied while holding his shield up, trying to push back against the Undead King’s greatsword.
As soon as the clash ended, a spellcaster and healer quickly cast restorative spells on him, recovering the HP and defensive barriers lost in that exchange. Crim recognized both of them from a previous PvP encounter. Their timing was impeccable, showing how accustomed they had become to fighting together, which brought a smile to Crim’s face.
…But they could not forget they were facing the Undead King, a formidable general of the past who fought with such grace and swiftness that his massive size seemed to weigh nothing.
**Accelerating Strikes.**
That was the name of a skill some raid bosses used, canceling the recovery animation of one attack to immediately launch another, leaving no openings. Sorleon had once explained that to Crim.
The boss spun like a top before unleashing a barrage of slashes, all the weight of his enormous sword focused entirely on Elmir.
“Elmir, step back, I’ll take over here…”
“I’m fine… Don’t worry, I’ll do it… I’m not stepping away from this fight..!!”
It was too much even for him, his HP steadily decreasing from the blows he could not fully block, yet Elmir shouted to keep Crim from stepping in. His eyes remained fixed on the Undead King, burning with determination.
“Undead King, I respect how you sacrificed yourself for your beliefs. I admire your military achievements, and I feel some compassion for you!”
“Elmir, above you!!”
The relentless assault finally knocked Elmir’s sword and arm upward, breaking his stance. The Undead King’s massive blade came down like a guillotine, prompting Crim to shout a warning.
“But that’s all…I won’t lose to you!! Shield Smite..!!”
Metal slammed against metal with a thunderous crash that echoed through the arena.
*That was good!*
Even disarmed, Elmir stepped forward and struck with his shield. Crim silently cheered him on, impressed by his quick reflexes. Shield Smite, a weapon art similar to Shield Bash, carried much greater knockback power, though at the cost of a longer cooldown. His shield connected near the hilt of the Undead King’s greatsword, releasing a blinding flash before both combatants leapt back to create distance.
“…Demon Lord, fox girl!!”
“Leave it to us!”
“Already here!”
The strike had staggered the Undead King. Seizing the opportunity, Elmir called for aid, but Crim and Hinagiku were already moving in, unwilling to let such a chance slip away.
“…Void Quietus!!”
Crim swung her scythe, unleashing a crescent of devouring darkness that slashed across the Undead King’s lower body.
“…And Raikiri too!!”
Hot on its heels, Hinagiku rushed forward, moving so fast she seemed to blur, leaving trails of blue fire in her wake. Like lightning outracing itself, she ran up the Undead King’s massive frame, carving a diagonal cut that erupted into searing blue flames.
*”GH…AH…?!”*
The combined attacks overwhelmed him, forcing the Undead King to his knees. His head lowered, and then…
“This is the end, Undead King… Requiescat!!”
That skill, born from combining the One-Handed Sword and Holy Magic, delivered three swift strikes: two forming a silver cross, the last a thrust through the center. The final blow pierced clean through the Undead King’s head.
***KA-CLINK***
The brittle sound of shattering echoed through the arena. His helmet cracked apart, scattering pieces as golden hair spilled free.
*”HAH…HAHAH…IT SEEMS I LOST.”*
He dropped his greatsword, no longer able to lift it. The weapon hit the ground with a heavy thud as light began to spread along the edges of his body.
His true face appeared, ghostly and worn, the remnants of the noble lord who had once devoted himself entirely to duty. Now, in his final moments, his expression seemed almost relieved. Slowly, he raised a trembling hand toward the young knight who had delivered the finishing blow.
*”I’M SORRY…I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO…I JUST WANTED TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE, THIS LAND…”*
“…I see.”
The words sounded like a confession wracked with regret. Elmir did not know how else to respond, so he simply nodded.
*”I…CAN I…FINALLY REST..?”*
“…Yes, you can. We’ll watch over this land for you now.”
Garland III raised his head one last time to make sure of it. Elmir answered with a warm smile. The Undead King’s disfigured face seemed to soften at last. His hollow eyes gave a final glance to Crim and the others, as if reassured.
*”THAT’S…GOOD TO KNOW. I’LL LEAVE THE REST TO YOU…THANK YOU, STRONG WARRIORS. AND YOU TOO, SPELLMASTER ALBERICH, I’LL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL TO YOU FOR GUIDING THEM… TO ME…”*
Those were the final words of Garland III before his body dissolved, rising as countless particles of light into the sky.
“…Let’s keep moving now. There’s still one last thing we promised to take care of.”
*”Right…thank you again.”*
Crim stood tall, pointing forward as she spoke. Alberich nodded, silently wiping tears as he mourned his fallen lord. One last scoundrel still awaited judgment within the fort. The massive gates, sealed until then, slowly creaked open, inviting Crim and her allies deeper inside…
