…A few minutes passed after the undead began attacking the turret.
“Oh… out of bullets. Jade, what about the muskets I requested?”
“Yes yes, I made all the ones you requested.”
With the two magazines spent, the bolt was unable to load any more rounds into the chamber.
In that state, GUNgnir was just a long chunk of metal, so Crim put it into her inventory and accepted the caplock rifles…muskets of a simple construction, and put them one after another into her inventory as well.
“The vanguard…is doing well enough. Hahah, Elmir really is going all out this time.”
Crim watched the state of the fight from a high vantage point. Most of the skeleton spellcasters and the enemy archers had already been taken out.
Hinagiku, Kasumi, and Setsuna all made good use of their high mobility, focusing mostly on the enemies on rooftops. Freya stayed a distance back, watching the battlefield while assisting with cleansing magic spells. Frey was close to her, throwing fire arrows at the few remaining archers.
The actual vanguard, those fighting in the frontlines, came mostly from Silver Wings, the guild led by Elmir. He had gotten especially inspired before the break they took, so he was holding back no punches as he fought against the undead army.
“Good, everything is in order there. Now…”
Crim nodded in satisfaction, pleased with how the battle was unfolding… but then her expression shifted. She suddenly turned sharply to look behind her, toward the path they had taken earlier.
A sharp clattering echoed through the air as a group of skeletons emerged from behind the wall Crim had used for cover during the earlier crossbow barrage.
“A pincer attack?!”
“Everyone, look behind—”
The top of the turret was quickly starting to panic, but Crim raised her hand and put a stop to it.
“Don’t fret, just keep supporting the front side. I’ll take care of the rest.”
“Wha… You alone?”
“Heh, it shan’t be a task of much difficulty. The door on that side is narrow, so I may hold it alone.”
The archers from the other guilds atop the turret looked worried, but Crim grinned confidently as she told them that, before jumping over the wall. Then, she readied a musket in her right hand, aiming it at the skeletons with curved swords running in front and pulled the trigger.
It was loaded with buck and ball, a mix of buckshot and regular bullets. The barrel lacked rifling, so its accuracy was poor, but the sheer impact was devastating, blasting several skeletons apart in a single shot.
And then…
“Eat…this!!”
Her voice rang out with vigor as she spun the empty musket around, swinging it to channel centrifugal force into the sturdy stock. With the added momentum from her fall, she brought it down hard, caving in the skull of a nearby skeleton.
“Yuck… Striking plain bone always feels so gross…Hah!”
She scowled at the sensation similar to snapping dry wood, but quickly composed herself again to throw the empty musket at another enemy, making it stagger. Before it could recover, she reached into her inventory to bring out a different musket and fired at the staggered skeleton and its surroundings.
…The fight went on like that, a bit of kicking and hitting, before firing another musket. The muskets flew and spun around like twirling batons, which she threw liberally at the enemy as she hopped further in.
“Woahh…”
“It’s like the Ditzy Lord is dancing while fighting…”
“Crim has gone insane now…”
The archers atop the turret voiced their disbelief, while Lycoris sounded almost betrayed.
“Crim! Don’t be so rough with my babies!”
“My apologies Jade!”
“I get that they’re cheap for you, but don’t even think of doing that with GUNgnir, got it!!”
Even Jade protested her treatment of the guns, as she ran behind Crim to pick up the fallen muskets and reloading them.
But now that Crim had been given a source of more bullets, her fighting style was given new life, like a fish that found fresh water, constantly catching the reloaded muskets Jade threw her way and firing them before discarding them again.
Her white hair trailed behind her, her red coat twirled around, and there was almost a rhythm to the hops followed by gunshots, smoke, and sparks flying around the battlefield, like a dance of the death…Danse Macabre.
In the end, Crim kept her word, and she alone defended the rear side of the turret from the incoming skeletons, decimating their army.
“…Phew, fighting with guns isn’t so bad every once in a while. And the best part is that I don’t have to get close to the undead this way!”
“No! That’s not how you fight with guns at all!!”
“Oh…huh?!”
Crim wiped the sweat from her brow with a smug face…but was quickly corrected by Lycoris, something Crim had not expected.
“…I’m really glad, from the bottom of my heart, that I chose to ally myself with her.”
Someone else muttered that, looking at the mountain of loose bones left by the defeated skeletons…and everyone else nodded in agreement.
