After having dinner with Freya and Frey, Crim logged back in two hours later just like they had agreed.
There, she saw that many of their friends were already online, including someone new who had been too busy to join earlier.
“Jade?!”
“Hello hello Ditzy Lord, and yes I’m here. I just had to come when I heard that there’s some crazy alchemist enemy.”
Lua Cheia’s own alchemist said that with a nervous chuckle.
“But…but what about work…”
“I got off early today! But Sara got the night shift so may God bless her soul.”
Then she looked around from the tall turret, seeing the other players readying their bows and guns, and began to grin.
“And also…heheheh, it looks like the perfect chance to use that thing you requested.”
“…Hm? Does that mean…”
“Yes, it’s done and ready to be used.”
Anticipation mounted in Crim’s eyes as Jade began ruffling through her bag, and eventually…
“Sometimes sniping from afar can be more convenient, right? So here you go, GUNgnir!”
Eventually, she found the item and held it out, talking like a certain robotic cat. It was a large sniper rifle, made of plain metal and roughly the size of Crim’s height.
…The sniper rifle GUNgnir.
While it was really long, the barrel was rather narrow. It had been named in a peculiar way to make it different from the spear Gungnir that was certain to show up in the game eventually, and was currently the sniper rifle with the highest accuracy and power, coveted by all gunner players.
There were quite a few of those in the Lua Cheia United Kingdoms, and all of them (including Lycoris) turned around to look at it when Jade pulled it out. Crim noticed all of those eyes on her as she took the gun, checked the grip, and tested holding it.
…It was also one of the items they made with a bunch of rare materials from R’lyeh. Though sadly, they only kept a small amount of those materials.
“I didn’t think this baby would see combat so soon, so I only have sixteen bullets. They’re special ones too, so you can’t switch them with regular bullets. Don’t go wasting them, okay?”
“Got it, thanks.”
Jade said that while holding out two magazines, Crim took and put one in her inventory and loaded the other into the rifle.
“D-Demon Lord, you can use that?”
Elmir asked, not convinced it was a good idea, while Crim replied with eyes twinkling like a child who had just received a new toy.
“No need to worry, I don’t have any restrictions on the weapon types I can use. It’s just that I can’t make any guns with magic, so I haven’t used one yet.”
Now that she had obtained a physical gun, Crim would be able to snipe together with Lycoris from now on.
Just like how the Katana Skill had Alternate Styles, or the Forms used with One-Handed Swords, the Gun Skill also had what many referred to as Specialized Style Skills, such as sniping or dual-wielding pistols. However, Crim could not acquire any of those.
On top of that, since she lacked an innate Skill for using guns, she was also unable to access the special abilities available to dedicated gunners, which severely limited her capabilities. Even so, when the situation called for additional ranged support or participation in a firing line, she could still manage to hold her own.
Crim explained all of that to Elmir as she checked the contents of the magazine and pulled the bolt to load a round into the chamber. There was a satisfying metalling clang, which set the hearts of all men ablaze.
“Umm, Crim…? I was thinking um…could I…could I borrow it sometime? Maybe…?”
“Aye, we did fight side by side to gather the materials, so it is thy right to make use of it as well. Feel free to ask for it whenever thou hast need.”
Lycoris nervously asked about that, either because she could not contain her curiosity anymore, or because her obsession with guns was driving her insane. Either way, Crim did not mind letting her try it.
“Alright then… Everyone, take aim. Vanguard, stand ready, the enemy will charge the moment I open fire.”
Saying that, Crim propped GUNgnir on a corner of the parapet to keep the long barrel steady, and looked through the scope to aim at the gap in the bretèches on another wall far away.
Through it, she was able to spot a Death Knight archer, looking back at her. Lycoris set up next to her, took aim, and then looked at Crim, who held her finger at the trigger while giving a nod.
Crim took a deep breath. Then she expelled all that air.
She felt like her field of view was narrowing, her heartbeat slowed down…then pushed the reticle in her scope slightly above the Death Knight…and pulled the trigger.
BAAAAAAAANGGG!!
An explosion like the roaring of a wild beast echoed through the citadel as the bullet was propelled with extreme force from the barrel, crossing the distance to the target in an instant…and piercing through the head of the Death Knight.
A moment later, Lycoris also fired a bullet of light, which struck the head of the other target they had identified. A skeleton spellcaster standing far away that would be too troublesome to deal with from the ground.
“Alright, we’ll take down any other pesky enemies before the enemy reaches us. Everyone else, march on!”
The undead charged toward the turret just as the empty rifle casing was ejected, clinking sharply against the stone floor. Crim loaded the next round without missing a beat, shouting commands to the troops on the ground. That single metallic sound was enough to signal that things were about to get chaotic once more within Garland Citadel. Lua Cheia’s campaign had entered its second act.
Afterword:
The Ditzy Lord prefers being a jack of all trades, or rather weapons, even if her ability is only superficial.
