Orbet roared as Mana gathered between his eyebrows, glowing with an intense radiance. The amassed Mana formed into rays and began to shoot out in all directions around him. Howard and the others ducked quickly to try and avoid the Mana rays, but a few were unable to avoid the blasts. Parts of their equipment were struck, erupting into flames and getting blown away. When a Mana ray struck the ground, the compressed energy was released, rapidly melting and vaporizing the surrounding earth. The impact zone exploded outward in a burst of searing flames.

“Hyahahahaha! Die! Die!!! Drop dead!”

Orbet continued firing Mana rays in rapid succession. Explosions and flames engulfed the area, and his maniacal laughter echoed through the air.

“Damn you, Child Eater! Ryder!”
“Yes?!”

Howard exchanged a glance with Ryder, and both charged toward Orbet. Seeing this, Orbet focused his Mana on Howard and fired again.

“Disappear already, you blasted geezer!”

Howard’s equipment flared with brilliance, the blue glow of the Zweihänder intensifying.

“Hmph!”

As the Mana ray closed in, Howard poured all his strength and spirit into his blade, slashing the Zweihänder upward and deflecting the beam of light.

“T-That’s impossible!”

Orbet’s massive, reptilian eyes widened in disbelief as his mana ray was deflected by a single sword strike. Seizing the brief opening, the knight’s sword pierced the space between his eyebrows. Ryder leapt onto Orbet’s head and drove the sword, its blade radiating a holy aura, deep into him as golden light surged forth.

Orbet screamed in agony and reared up on his hind legs, thrashing his head in a desperate attempt to shake Ryder off.

At that moment, Howard leapt into the gap created by Orbet’s movement. In the next instant, his powerful sword drew a blazing blue arc, and the flash of energy streaked across Orbet’s torso. The strike cleaved Orbet’s massive body in half in a single, fluid motion.

From the left of his stomach to the base of his right foreleg, Orbet’s body was split open. His enormous frame slid apart along the wound and collapsed heavily onto the ground. The flesh of his massive form began to bubble—just as it had when he absorbed the Mana—but this time, it crumbled and melted away. Soon, all that remained was the frail, white, childlike upper body.

“I-Impossible… H-How could I… lose…”

Now stripped of his power, Orbet muttered in confusion, unable to comprehend what had happened. White steam had billowed from his body as the remains of his form collapsed into a grotesque, melting heap.

“This is it, Child Eater…”

Orbet lay face down, scratching at the ground with his pale fingers, trying to drag himself forward using only his hands. But there was no strength left in his body. Howard walked beside Orbet, who writhed weakly on the ground, and quietly spoke.

“Ryder, you finish it.”

Howard said as he looked down at Orbet with a calm expression.

“What?! But, Sir Cloud! You should do it! I’m fine. I managed to help push him back this much, and…”
“Don’t push this old man too hard… I’ve nearly used up all my strength. I don’t have enough power left to finish him now. You do it, Ryder. And then move on. I want you to settle this!”
“Sir Cloud…”

Howard met Ryder’s eyes and nodded firmly. Ryder stepped forward, holding his knight’s sword in a reverse grip. A golden holy aura gathered in the air, then tightly compressed and concentrated. Without hesitation, he faced Orbet, who still twitched faintly at his feet.

“You’ve met your end, Child Eater. Disappear and never return!”

With that, he drove the golden knight’s sword deep into Orbet’s heart with a single, fluid motion. For a moment, Orbet’s body jerked slightly—but then, it shattered into glowing particles of light, which quietly scattered into the air and vanished.

“Orbet has disappeared.”

In a small, dim room, after a long and heavy silence, a man murmured softly. In the space, lit only by a faint oil lamp, a few figures swayed in and out of shadow, their forms barely visible in the darkness. The one who spoke lounged back comfortably in a large, regal chair.

His skin was tanned, and his long, straight black hair cascaded down the back of the chair. He wore only a loincloth that hung loosely in front, leaving his upper body bare. A wide necklace of gold and silver hung around his neck, golden bracelets circled his arms, and a thin silver crown adorned his forehead—each piece reflecting the weak lamplight with a quiet glint. But brighter than any of those ornaments were his sharp, cold eyes.

The man standing before those cold eyes wore a heavy black robe, his hood drawn low to reveal only his mouth. He looked to be a man not yet in his prime. He responded to the earlier comment with calm detachment.

“That seems to be the case. It seems he truly wasn’t strong enough.”
“Rodolphe Darker, you used Orbet, didn’t you?”
“……”
“You used him to gauge their strength, didn’t you?”

At the question from the man seated on the highest throne, a woman behind Rodolphe quickly stepped forward, interrupting the conversation in haste.

“Mimroad, with all due respect, Master Rodolphe bears no ill will toward you! He would never…”
“That’s enough, Clarimonde. I do not blame your master.”
“It’s true that we couldn’t predict how effective he would be against the people in Amukham. The strength among those villagers is uncommon. But… this happened far more quickly than I anticipated…”
“What are you thinking, Abd?”

The man on the throne directed the question to one of the people standing nearby.

“My apologies. I believe it was the result of Orbet’s haughty nature. He failed in measuring their strength beforehand and thus underestimated them.”

The follower, named Abd, responded swiftly.

“Well then, Rodolphe? Was your intention to measure the strength of those skilled fighters?”
“The strength of that village is unknown, and…”
“The hero’s strength is also unknown, isn’t that right?”
“……”
“There is no need to be surprised. I, too, have eyes and ears, though perhaps not as keen as yours.”
“You must jest…”
“A jest? Haha. That’s right, this is just a simple joke. Fufufu.”
“I knew that even with Lord Orbet’s power, he would be in danger against the fighters of that village… As such, I took the necessary measures, but it wasn’t enough.”
“I said that Orbet disappeared, didn’t I? What I meant was that his existence was erased.”
“W-What?!”

Abd exclaimed in astonishment.

“As a True Vampire, Orbet would normally resurrect, even if he’s slain. But that can’t happen if he has been erased from existence. His soul has been utterly annihilated.”
“To think they were this strong.”
“Do the people in that village possess that kind of strength?”
“……”
“The first hero in 200 years. This sure sounds like fun. Don’t you agree, Rodolphe?”
