But if it really is the headmistress, then investigating her will be troublesome. I’m already feeling discouraged. Stealthy investigation doesn’t really suit our style, either.
「Thank you very much. I learned a lot today.」
「I’m glad to be of any help.」
「In that case, may I ask one last question?」
「What might it be?」
「Princess Leshimiiya, do you know of 『Artificial Divine Messengers』?」
「…The monsters that appeared in Estoque and Central, yes? From what I’ve heard, no one knows who subjugated either of them, and the two didn’t share the same appearance.」
「If you ever find one, could you relay the information to me?」
「I don’t really mind, but…」
Why?—the princess’ gaze seemed to ask.
Since we didn’t really hide ourselves when defeating the first one, and Cielmer doesn’t need to keep it a secret, I answered frankly: 「Finding these Artificial Divine Messengers is part of why I came to Ausente, you see.」
「To defeat them?」
「That’s the plan. I simply want to defeat them, so if you’d like, I can hand over its magic core and materials.」
「That would be appreciated, but…」
Her gaze once again questioned my intention, but I didn’t answer this time.
After all, I have no obligation to explain. Frankly, even the manor servants probably don’t know our reasons.
I’m not sure about our personal attendants, though.
「I do not particularly claim ownership of it, so if Ausente ever happens to defeat one in the future, that wouldn’t be a problem either.」
「I appreciate the sentiment. I’m well aware that they’re not weak monsters, so we will prioritize minimizing the collateral damage.」
「Princess, the time…」
「I see. Miss Ailneige, thank you for having me today.」
「No, it was my pleasure. It was a meaningful time.」
With that, I parted ways with the princess and headed to the Hunter’s Sorcery lecture room.
◇◇◇
Despite the different name, the Hunter’s Sorcery lecture was mostly the same as the General Sorcery one, and the teacher was still Ms. Claura, so there wasn’t really anything new.
But as I suspected, I guess? The students in Class A seem to be high achievers, as I didn’t see any of my homeroom classmates here either.
After the Hunter’s Sorcery class ended, next was Monsterology. From here, I switched with Ciel, as it was her time to attend classes. A lot of my classmates were present this time.
Among them was Palra, and as soon as she saw Ailneige, she immediately came over. With great speed, the seat next to Ail was claimed, leaving several boys visibly disappointed.
「Ailneige, good afternoon!」
「Good afternoon.」
「Have you already attended some classes?」
「I attended two sorcery lectures.」
「Really? This will be my first class, so I’m kind of nervous.」
「What did you do this morning?」
「I helped with dismantling. I earned more than expected today, so I splurged a bit for lunch.」
As Palra cheerfully talked, Ciel listened with her usual detached expression. It’s only happened a few times, but I’m already getting used to this scene. Ciel doesn’t actually seem to dislike it at all, so perhaps they might have surprisingly good chemistry.
I had heard from Princess Leshimiiya that hunter aspirants are given time to work, but hearing it firsthand makes me appreciate this fact more.
And so, as Palra shared her experiences with dismantling monsters, my own knowledge of dismantling grew.
In the past, we would only take the monster’s subjugation proof and magic core; after getting a magic pouch, we simply stuffed the whole thing inside. As a result, I have absolutely zero hands-on dismantling knowledge. And even in the future, I probably won’t have much use for Palra’s shared wisdom either.
Before long, the lecture began, and—unlike the sorcery ones—this one was actually kind of interesting.
After all, the most I know about the monsters taught at the basic level is that they die when beheaded. No, that’s mostly an exaggeration, but I didn’t even know that goblins are exclusively right-handed. It’s genuinely fascinating.
Generally, there were many warnings: even the weakest monsters can kill you, never let your guard down outside towns, only fight monsters you’re sure you can defeat, and so on.
There will likely be students who take on hunter work outside the walls during their time here, so maybe this first lecture was meant to help prevent fatal injuries.
「The next period is Combat Training. What will you be wearing, Ailneige?」
「My usual hunter equipment.」
「Right, you’re a hunter after all. I don’t really have anything like that, so I’m kind of embarrassed. The outfit I wear when helping out during hunts is really plain…」
「Standing out wouldn’t be helpful anyway.」
Unless it’s an extremely high-grade weapon or armor, flashy gear tends to be a disadvantage, in my opinion.
Even the outfit we had tailor-made is a mostly inconspicuous long-sleeved cloak.
It’s a verdant green color that blends easily into forests. However, our white hair still stands out as usual.
「Is there something you want to say?」
「N-nope, nothing at all. Yep.」
Palra had been staring at Ail’s hair, so I could guess what was on her mind. But Ail was able to complete requests just fine with this hair color, so there’s nothing to worry about.
We generally keep it inside our cloak most of the time, so it’s not that much of a problem in keeping a low profile.
「Well then, see you later.」
「Yup, see you.」
Palra scurried off like she was escaping, while Ciel leisurely went off to change.
And that ends this the chapter! From teatime with the princess, we have some idle chatting with Palra! It’s honestly nice how Palra seems a bit less fidgety this time around. Though she did kinda mess up at the end, lol.
Continuing from the discussion about the taboo, Ain also informed the princess about their goal of defeating the Artificial Divine Messengers, so that’s one matter that shouldn’t cause a conflict of interest later on due to lack of communication. Moving on, it’s once again nice to see our social underdog Palra doing her best. Man, I don’t know why, but I honestly find it endearing how she’s basically an Slice of Life main character interacting with a brooding ice queen side character if you look at it from another perspective.
Now then, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice day~!
