Demon Sword Maiden Chapter 45

I spent quite some time thinking of the classifier regarding the monster’s ranking system. The direct translation would be Low-Rank Initial Stage, Low-Rank Middle Stage, etc.

I felt that the direct translation would be too long. So I came up with several options:

Option AOption BOption COption DOption E
Low-Rank
Low-Rank+
Superior Low-Rank
etc…
Lesser Low-Rank
Low-Rank
Superior Low-Rank
etc…
Low-Rank
Low-Rank+
Low-Rank++
etc…
Low-Rank
Low-Rank Plus
Low-Rank Plus Ultra
etc…
Low Rank-
Low Rank
Low Rank+
etc…

Obviously, I chose option A, but options C is not bad either. What are your thoughts? Which option do you prefer? If there is none, what other option would you suggest? Please leave your comment below or cast your vote HERE!

  1. I’d still prefer the direct translation, as translations in general should be as faithful as possible and in this case the direct meaning conveys more than a mere + or – sign (like the existence of stages themselves that may or may not be an important distinguishing factor). So that’d be my vote under “Other”. That said, if it’s really not possible, then it depends on how many “stages” exist for each “rank”; if it’s only 3 (initial, middle, upper(?) then option E is the cleanest. If there’s a 4th (something like “Pinnacle”) then E with ++ or C with +++ (even though it both look bad…) or perhaps E but ending with “Pinnacle X-Rank”. 5 or more, and direct translation is the only reasonable option.

    1. I’ve said this before but generally what I’ve learned in my long years of translating is that: direct translation is never a good idea. That’s what a beginner does.

What I mean is that, if I am to use the direct translation, then onmyoji would end up as “yin-yang master” and shikigami will be “formula god”.

      1. If I have to pick from those, I’d go with C for the same reason above.
(besides, on some occasions, authors more or less throw these ranking systems out the window later on in the story).

Though if I was making an “other” answer, I might go with something like 3rd tier Low Rank -> 2nd tier… -> 1st tier… to avoid having readers read symbols like that. Maybe swap the order tho, so it becomes “Low Rank, 3rd Tier” and so on.

Anyway, thanks for the hard work~

    2. But yeah, what you said does make sense, but seeing as there are only 3 ranks for samurai, I am hopeful that it remains the same for monsters.
