「Jobs and humanity have been inseparable, granted to us by Goddess Alsharohs’ plea.」
「Was it not granted to us by Goddess Alsharohs directly?」
「That is correct. To be precise, it is said that Jobs were granted to the then powerless humanity by the gods. As Goddess of Love, healing is Goddess Alsharohs’ domain, but she is by no means skilled in battle.」
「So each Job has a specific god that governs over it, I see.」
Lowering the hood, removing the mask, and turning my black hair back to white, I’m back to Ciel―Ailneige―style. As anyone can guess, going to the church in our Ainsel getup would likely cause a ruckus. Honestly, I also wanted to give the reins back to Ciel, but she refused because today is Ainsel Day.
The church has two fairly distant entrances, one that rough-looking people are using and another that regular-ish townsfolk are using. In other words, hunters seem to have their own entryway. Well, having people coming to worship and hunters going through the same entrance could result in trouble―or make it harder for regular people to enter―so this arrangement is understandable.
For now, we tried entering through the regular townsfolk’s entryway. While our outfit leans on hunter fashion, I probably look like a noble lady incognito, and we just had some trouble at the Hunter Guild, so I’d rather not be near a gathering of hunters for a while.
As we entered the church, we were caught by a sister who asked for alms. From a quick scan, they don’t seem to ask from everyone, so they must be only approaching those who seem to have money.
While I’m sure we wouldn’t be barred from entry if we refused, it’s pretty much like giving offerings at a shrine, which I’m used to doing, so I thought of giving alms after discussing with Ciel. I thought about it, but I have no idea how much we should give.
I tried asking how much would be good, but the sister responded, *’Any amount is more than enough.’* That doesn’t help me at all, but I guess it might not be good to specify an amount on their part.
『I wonder how much would be good.』
『How about we give 10 large gold coins?』
『That’d be too conspicuous. Well, let’s try around 2 or 3 gold coins.』
『Yeah, that sounds good.』
While Ciel probably wanted to get rid of our excess money with this given opportunity, 10 large gold coins is a bit too much. After all, that’s around a year’s worth of our dormitory room rent. Honestly, 2 or 3 gold coins is not an amount to easily give away either, but if the sister already suspects that I’m a noble, this should be the right amount for a noble visiting in secret.
However, after actually handing it over, the sister was completely taken by surprise, so I decided to ask for a simple guide around the area. Either due to the amount or due to confirming―in her mind―that I’m a noble, she gladly undertook the request, and now she’s currently giving explanations while leading me through a long hallway of doors.
Specifically, she talked about the gods and Jobs, but on the topic of Jobs, it sounds like there are parts where I’m more knowledgeable. For example, in regard to how the Creator God was the one who created the foundation of the Job system.
Speaking of gods, other than Alsharohs, she also spoke about the God of Technology Mehtestos, the God of War Quacres, the God of Sorcery Waltorus, and the Chief God Tyrnorus.
Like how both Quacres and Tyrnorus were in love with Alsharohs, and so on and so forth; I feel like I’ve already heard this somewhere, and I’m honestly not interested.
While she continued her exposition, when we reached the chapel, the sister immediately stopped speaking. The chapel, bathed in the kaleidoscopic light from the stained glass windows, looked so divine; this is probably a popular tourist spot. 『It’s a beautiful place.』 Ciel even explicitly praised it, scoring it additional points for me.
If the sister actually fell silent so we could have a proper look, she’s quite the considerate person.
「It’s such a beautiful place. The air here feels so soul cleansing.」
「Yes. It’s a bit presumptuous for me to say, but we take pride in our chapel’s beauty.」
Seemingly delighted by my words, the sister cheerfully responded.
「Is the statue in front that of Goddess Alsharohs?」
「That’s right. I have been told that this statue of the goddess has been here since this church’s construction.」
「It’s… a quite splendid statue. If it’s alright with you, may I hear more stories about Goddess Alsharohs?」
「If you are fine with what little I know… But before that, could we change locations first?」
「Of course.」
Since it’d be obstructive of us to talk in front of the entrance, I agreed to the sister’s suggestion and sat down on an unoccupied bench. I don’t know if this is an unpopular time or not, but along the long benches arranged in a line, there is only one person offering a prayer and another reading a book.
Perhaps the sister is not allowed to sit down, as despite there being available sitting space, she remained standing.
「Now then, I would like to apologize in advance, but other than what I have shared earlier, I don’t really have that much I can share about Goddess Alsharohs. Is there anything specific that you would like answered?」
「You said that Goddess Alsharohs is the only god to speak to humans, but do you know what words she had said?」
「That, I can answer. Most recently was when I had just been born; she had apparently announced that a powerful monster was to appear by the frontier lands. Some time before that was, “Impart our teachings to more people.”」
If she had just been born, could it be around 20 years in the past? Perhaps she’s even younger than that, but the last oracle is still more recent than I expected. Personally, that’s somewhat suspicious enough for me; the second-to-last oracle is a lot more dubious on whether it was actually spoken by the Goddess. After all, Alsharohs… or rather, the church does not forbid the worship of other gods. The church is likely this world’s most widespread religion, so I find it hard to believe that it would need to be spread more.
There is a chance that Alsharohs meant it as spreading her and the other gods’ teachings, but it’s still fishy. Most of all, the sulking god the Creator God mentioned is likely to be Alsharohs.
「The most famous of her messages is, “Grant healing to everyone impartially.” Following her word, the church impartially heals anyone in need.」
「Goddess Alsharohs must care for us greatly, then.」
「Yes, that’s right.」
And that ends this part of the chapter! We’re introduced to more of the in-world mythology, which is very well appreciated! I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice day~!
