Seeing her delighted as though she herself were being praised, this sister must be very pious. Or she’s a good swindler, or I just can’t read her.
「Speaking of healing, what should I do if I wish to request medical treatment?」
Since the previous topic was at a good stopping point, I asked the thing I’m curious about, and the sister’s expression immediately froze. You can practically hear a pin drop in this sudden silence. It’s probably because right after speaking of granting impartial healing, they charge a fee for it.
As I was wondering how she’d reply, she frantically responded, as though to compensate for her silence.
「Are you perhaps injured?」
「I’m currently enrolled in the second academy, and there’s a chance that my peers could get injured. I don’t really know what to do in case we encounter that predicament…」
「Umm, if you inform us, then you will be guided to a dedicated treatment room. If you enter from the other entrance, then there is also a reception desk there… But either way, we will need to ask a considerate amount of alms…」
「Since even the church surely needs money to continue operating, that really can’t be helped.」
「That’s exactly the case. I’m glad to see that you understand. There are occasionally people who immediately turn to anger, you see…」
The sister’s distant gaze is telling of her hardships, but let’s poke a little more. I didn’t want to come here, but since I’m already here, I’ll take all the information I can get.
「Specifically, how much would it cost?」
「A standard miracle would be 2 large silver pieces, while higher miracles would need a few large gold coins.」
「Around what degree of injuries can a standard miracle heal?」
「It can heal a fracture immediately and can also cure certain common diseases. For the higher miracles, it can regenerate recently lost limbs and organs, and can cure more severe diseases. However, when it comes to diseases, there are regrettably many that miracles simply cannot cure.」
The said standard miracle has around the same healing effect as a basic potion and can heal illnesses. If I remember, a basic potion should be around 5 large silver coins, so this should be cheaper. Still, it’s not cheap for the regular populace. For a regular household, it’s probably difficult to afford several miracles in a year.
The most expensive healing likely has a greater effect than the Song Princess’ healing. For the Song Princess, reconnecting detached body parts is the limit; regenerating lost limbs is impossible.
The talk about impartial healing probably refers to providing equal pricing regardless of social status, so I guess that makes sense. While the ideal could be to heal anyone for free, since the church does employ people, they inevitably require money; even nonprofit organizations still need the bare minimum operating capital. Let’s put aside whether the church is nonprofit or not for now.
It likely costs them money to maintain the temples as well.
*Nonetheless, I guess there isn’t any resurrection magic, huh?* As this thought went through my head, 「However—」 the sister confidently continued.
「—For light injuries, you can get it healed as long as you come to the chapel at a certain time.」
「At a certain time?」
「Yes. It should begin right about now.」
A few seconds after saying so, a song suddenly echoed. It’s a very church-ish song, singing praises for the goddess. I looked around to find where it could be coming from, but I didn’t see anyone who could be the source, and most importantly, this singing felt awfully familiar.
『Isn’t this a Song Princess’ singing?』
『I believe so.』
『It’s my first time hearing a Song Princess who isn’t Ain, but Ain is a much better singer.』
『That’s… Thank you very much. Umm, would it be fine to do a small experiment?』
『Sure, I don’t mind.』
I didn’t mention what I planned to do, but since Ciel gave the permission, I made a small knife wound on my fingertip in a way unnoticeable to the surrounding people. I really didn’t want to wound Ciel’s body, but there is something I really needed to confirm for Ciel’s future safety.
Observing the wound for a few seconds, there was no particular change. The pain is still there, and the blood flow isn’t stopping.
After this, I put up a certain barrier and switched with Ciel, who seemed to have realized my intentions.
Then, the pain slowly but gradually started fading. Ciel glanced at the wound, and the bleeding had stopped, proof that the wound was healing.
I could just let Ciel stay in control as is, but the moment we had proper confirmation, Ciel once again switched with me.
『I suppose I’ll have to leave this one to Ain.』
『I don’t think there’s a need for excessive caution… but in case anything happens, I’ll probably have to be the one to run.』
『So, what are you going to do, Ain?』
『Nothing at all. I was simply proving my suspicion.』
This series of actions was an experiment with a Song Princess’ song. I wanted to see if one can defend against a Song Princess’ abilities, and the conclusion was that only another Song Princess can defend against it. Even shutting out all sound didn’t work, so it can apparently go through my current barrier.
Still, I don’t believe the Song Princess’ debuff can work against Mother Fii, and it shouldn’t work against spirits either, so maybe they can choose whether it can influence them or not. That’ll probably be possible for us when we reach around 50% divinity? Maybe a bit higher.
Anyway, even if it can affect Ciel, it doesn’t seem to affect us when I’m in control, so I guess that’s a relief for now.
Now, about Ciel’s question of what to do about the Song Princess that should be here, I don’t plan on doing anything. While this did increase my suspicion towards the church, unless Ciel wants to help, I won’t be helping, and I don’t think she wants to do anything either.
「Is that… Singing?」
As the song ended, I asked the sister.
「It’s a song that only priests of higher power can utilize, which grants some level of healing to anyone who hears it. As it is channeled through song, people first experiencing it may find it odd―or even distrust it―but it is by no means anything sinister, so there’s no need to be anxious.」
「I see. May I ask who the individual singing may be?」
「That, I unfortunately cannot answer, since I do not know who it is either.」
Are the higher-ups the only ones that know her identity?
Well, digging deeper probably won’t get me answers, so let’s shift to a different question.
And that’s the end of this chapter! With the visit to the church, we got some lore drops and world-building. I kinda feel bad for the sister, as usual, the people directly interacting with clients/customers get the short end of the stick.
On the previous part, we had some lore drops about the gods and their connection to Jobs. Combined with Ain’s knowledge, we can surmise that these named gods were given the Job system foundation by the Creator God, for whatever reason. Though the Creator God is still managing some part of the Job distribution, at least, since the Goddess of Love is apparently sulking, lol.
For the second part, it’s funny and sad how the sister felt relieved when Ain showed understanding about there being a charge for medical service, she probably had a lot of angry encounters. And then there was the curious case of the mysterious Song Princess. Based on how the discrimination surrounding Disappointing Jobs has been built up throughout the story, Ain’s caution and suspicion is understandable. Still, her singing did prove that church’s point about impartial healing, though.
Now then, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Please feel free to comment. Stay healthy, stay safe, and have a nice day~!
