Re:Library

“Certainly, the first question: how did you come to be like this?”

“I started to change a few days after the zombie outbreak. A classmate and I gradually transformed into this,” Lin Feng explained.

“Wait a second,” Li Ying halted, pausing the recording on her high-definition smartphone.

“What’s the problem? I’m telling the truth. You want me to change something?”

“No, it’s not that. What are you thinking? I was forced by the officials to say those things when I was in F city. Can you add a ‘meow’ after finishing each sentence?”

“Add a ‘meow’?”

“Yes, it will create more impact and prove the authenticity of your mutation. Also, can you wag your tail and ears while speaking? It will prevent some internet skeptics from claiming it’s just a special effect.”

“Uh, okay.”

“3, 2, 1, let’s start again.”

“So, the first question: how did you become like this?”

Lin Feng, with a pained expression, started to speak again, this time shaking his tail. “A few days after the zombie outbreak, my classmate and I gradually turned into this, meow.”

“The second question, what do you think about the quarantine stations?”

“Quarantine stations? They’ve been taken over by those damn gangsters, and the officials are doing nothing! They’re planning to bomb us with missiles! We’re going to die here, you people… meow.”

Li Ying paused, surprised by this new information, but continued to ask her questions.

“What is your opinion on the military shooting civilians?”

“I don’t know much about the virus, but those were living people. I think they should be examined and treated, not just shot outright, meow.”

“Can you demonstrate your mutation for us?”

“Yes, I can,” Lin Feng said, approaching the camera to show his ears. Feeling a bit shy, he allowed Li Ying to pull down his trousers slightly to inspect the base of his tail.

“This is the real story here! Reporter Li Ying will continue to record. If I can’t make it back alive, please ensure this footage is broadcast.”

After finishing her recording, Li Ying turned off the camera.

“That’s it then.”

“That’s it,” Lin Feng agreed, scratching his ear and flicking his tail.

“It’s better to keep it simple. Too much information can create confusion. By the way, what are you planning to do? The missile strike is imminent.”

“I…” Lin Feng hesitated, contemplating whether to reveal his plan, as more people meant more burdens.

“We’re planning to escape on a plane from the museum,” he eventually admitted, appreciating the reporter’s professionalism and the fact that she had saved his life.

“Really? Could I possibly…”

“I’ll try my best,” Lin Feng interjected, anticipating her request.

“No, that’s not what I meant. Could you take my recordings and give them to my superiors? I know it must be hard for you to increase the transportation load,” Li Ying quickly clarified, understanding Lin Feng’s reluctance. She smiled, indicating her years of experience in reading people.

“Oh, that’s definitely not a problem.”

Lin Feng hadn’t expected Li Ying to prioritize her mission over her life. He felt guilty for underestimating her and his respect for her grew.

“But, could you help me with one small favor?” Li Ying asked, clasping her hands together, a hopeful expression on her face.

“A small favor?” Lin Feng asked, sensing her request might be more complex than it appeared.
