Fear and tension gripped Lin Feng’s heart, yet through the eyes of a cat, these emotions seemed trivial. His mind was a whirlwind of conflicting feelings.
After some thought, Lin Feng retreated and rummaged through a female employee’s drawer to find a towel. He wiped the sweat from his hands, then located a radiator and tied one end of a rope around it, securing the other end under his arm.
Feeling somewhat reassured, he returned to the window. This time, he didn’t dare look down at the daunting height below. Instead, he slowly moved towards a protruding stone that offered a path upwards, steadying himself against the wall.
With a swift motion, Lin Feng grabbed the stone and scrambled up, using both hands and feet.
Breathing a sigh of relief upon reaching the top, he admired the unique perspective from this height. The panoramic view was worth the effort. Although one could see the city from the lower windows, Lin Feng preferred this vantage point to survey the entire riverside area of E City.
No longer needing to consult a map, he easily spotted the quarantine station—a former office building repurposed by the military. A large white cloth covered the building, with a prominent red cross painted in the middle. It fluttered in the river breeze, impossible to miss.
Frowning, Lin Feng tried to discern details from afar but couldn’t make out much.
“Psst, hey Hao Jian, can you hear me?”
“I hear you, junior, what’s up?”
“I’m on the roof of Fengshun Logistics. Could you find a pair of binoculars and bring them to me?” Lin Feng spoke into the walkie-talkie, reluctant to make another trip down. With plenty of time to spare, he decided to wait for Hao Jian’s leisurely arrival.
The rooftop sun felt pleasant, though it was a bit chilly near the river.
“Lin Feng, your binoculars.”
Hearing Hao Jian’s voice, Lin Feng threw down the rope from the roof, and upon feeling a tug, he hauled it up and grabbed the binoculars, immediately turning them towards the quarantine station.
But something was amiss.
Why was there no one?
Confused, he flicked his tail. In his mind, the quarantine station should have been bustling, yet it was eerily deserted, like a barren land. A few military tanks were neatly lined up by the roadside, also devoid of life.
What was even more puzzling was the complete absence of any zombies. After watching for about 20 minutes without spotting a single soul, Lin Feng frowned and scanned the surroundings.
His attention was drawn to a distant building, from where it seemed a helicopter was taking off. It was probably a skyscraper owned by a business tycoon in E City.
Hmm? Yan Corporation? After comparing his location with the map, Lin Feng was baffled. Did Yan Aoxue’s family remain unaffected? If so, why hadn’t Yan Aoxue’s father sent this helicopter to rescue her when the outbreak first occurred?
Pondering fruitlessly, Lin Feng shook his head, tested the rope tied to the rooftop piping, and then climbed down.
“Hao Jian, why are you still here?”
“Waiting for you, junior. So, what’s the situation?” Hao Jian asked, surrounded by several zombie corpses, indicating he hadn’t been idle.
“It’s strange, very strange. I saw no one at the quarantine station.”
“No one?”
“Right. I observed for 20 minutes and didn’t see a single person. I’ll go there tonight.”
With evening approaching, Lin Feng decided to find some food to replenish his strength for the night’s venture to the quarantine station. He knew it was crucial to restore his energy for the task ahead.
