Lin Feng found the coat he’s currently wearing in a wardrobe at the hotel. Originally, the coat’s collar was adorned with a thick ring of fur, possibly fox or some other kind, but for Lin Feng, this seemed excessive, so he removed it all.
He was already furry enough.
The black coat was a good choice, offering no hindrance to running or jumping, and it even added a dash of stylishness.
Approaching the car’s trunk, Lin Feng patted the lid, prompting Hao Jian to open it. Lin Feng then began equipping himself. The buildings in this coastal area all bore the marks of weathering, covered in thick dust. The ground was littered with piles of zombie corpses, likely the aftermath of a military cleanup. Empty shell casings were scattered everywhere.
The central oil tar road bore deep tracks from tanks, hinting at a significant military presence.
Thump.
After retrieving a bow and arrow from the trunk, Hao Jian closed it and turned to Lin Feng.
“Where are we headed now?”
“It’s more like where I am going. I’ve synced the walkie-talkie to your car’s frequency. Just park in an alley; I’ll head up high to scout.”
After briefing Hao Jian, Lin Feng surveyed the surroundings, eyeing the tallest office building.
Fengshun International Logistics Co.
The company’s name loomed large on the roof. Given the context of all the logistics around, this building was the most imposing.
The first floor hosted a formal reception area with a spacious hall, featuring a central circular desk. Inside, a female zombie in uniform aimlessly roamed in circles.
Upon noticing Lin Feng, she charged towards him. Unfortunately, she couldn’t leap over the reception desk that came up to her chest and could only pace in place.
Lin Feng drew his katana, feeling a thrill. It was his first time handling this weapon, which he’d only seen in zombie TV shows. He remembered a TV series where a black woman wielding a katana was incredibly cool.
He gripped the katana expertly with both hands at the right position, aiming for the zombie’s neck.
A few minutes later.
Ding dong.
The familiar sound of the elevator door opening.
Lin Feng sighed, looking at the katana in his hand. Was he not suited for this weapon, or was the blade not sharp enough? Instead of slicing the zombie in half as he’d imagined, the blade got stuck halfway due to its length, making it difficult to withdraw. In the end, he had to use a spear to finish off the zombie.
In the movies he’d watched, katanas were portrayed as cutting through metal like butter. In his hands, however, it felt blunt. He decided to find a whetstone to sharpen it before using it again.
The katana, over 80cm long, was cumbersome to swing and even problematic to carry at his waist.
Reaching the top floor, Lin Feng casually dispatched a few office zombies absorbed in their duties. He opened a window to the rooftop, finding the stairway locked. After searching in vain for something to break the heavy lock, Lin Feng decided to climb directly to the rooftop.
Setting aside the cumbersome katana and bow, he strapped a rope around his waist for the descent. He assessed the 20-story height and the climbable design outside the window.
“Whew, Lin Feng, you’ve got this. Don’t be scared, you’re a cat,” he encouraged himself, gripping the top of the window frame. But a wave of dizziness washed over him as he glanced down.
