“It’s fancy,” Lin Feng said, holding up his hand to inspect the sparkling piece of jewelry. “But I don’t think guys are too suited for accessories like this.”
While the ring looked exquisite, especially against his soft hands and fair skin, which he inherited from Liu Mengqi. He slid it off and handed it back to her. “We’re identical, aren’t we? You can just try it out on yourself.”
Suddenly, his attention was caught by the tantalizing aroma wafting from the “Fish 2 Meet You” store. He remembered spotting a variety of fish there during their earlier zombie encounter. The temptation was now too strong to resist.
“How about a BBQ tonight?” Lin Feng suggested, glancing at his team.
Their unanimous cheer, perhaps a result of days surviving on just potatoes, resonated with excitement.
Lin Feng’s attention shifted to the fire exit. Seeing the substantial padlocks reinforcing the doors gave him a touch of comfort.
“Tonight, we aren’t turning in till we are dead drunk,” the school doctor announced, her eyes gleaming at the sight of the cocktails.
“Sen, how about a friendly drink-off? It’s been a while since our last showdown,” Liu Tao teased with a chuckle.
Sen smirked, “Challenge accepted! But remember, you’ve never outdrunk me.”
Lin Feng then approached Ruo Lian. “Could you assist with something?”
“What can I do?” she inquired.
“Would you and a few others help set up the bedding before we eat? The coffee shop across seems a cleaner option.” If he remembered correctly, there were even some sofas in there which they could use, and they could just sleep on the floor at the worst.
“Got it.” Ruo Lian coordinated with a group and headed to the coffee shop, bedding in tow.
“Liu Tao, Hao Jian, and Song Zhe,” Lin Feng began, “we’re on guard duty tonight, so no drinking.”
He added, directing his gaze at the school doctor, “And don’t drink till you’re dead drunk.” Despite the festive mood, they had to remain cautious. They were a capable team, but caution was the order of the day.
“Fine, fine,” said the school doctor, though she had already consumed half of her drink.
“Hey, easy there!”
Once the second floor had been secured, the group gathered their selected food items and regrouped in a barbecue restaurant. Using the small gas canisters they had scavenged, they ignited the grill and commenced their long-awaited feast.
“Finally, real meat!” Chen De and Liu Tao’s voices echoed in unison, brandishing their grilled steaks with tears of joy forming in their eyes.
“Lily, could you hand me that corn?”
“Do it yourself,” Lin Feng responded, nibbling on his slightly undercooked mackerel. He paused, brow furrowed. “This doesn’t taste right.”
He scrutinized the barbecue sauce he had prepared. Ginger, garlic, rice wine, light soy sauce, spring onions, and dark soy sauce – all seemed to be in order. He had concocted it according to a trusted recipe. “Why the difference in taste?”
“Junior, try this,” Hao Jian offered, presenting a skewer of expertly grilled beef.
“Mmm, oh. That’s nice!” Lin Feng commented with a nod, his tail swaying in contentment. With no worries about electricity, the air conditioning hummed, providing a cool respite.
“Sample mine,” Yan Ao Xue chimed in, offering a skewer of tofu with a grin.
“This is extraordinary! It’s not mere tofu; it’s transformed,” Lin Feng raved, his tail oscillating with increased enthusiasm.
“Try this!” Liu Mengqi interjected, a hint of competitiveness in her voice, as she handed Lin Feng a dark, charred skewer.
“Hm? The heck is this?” Lin Feng pondered aloud, taking a hesitant bite. The taste was overwhelmingly of burnt crust. Puzzled, his tail formed a questioning arch.
