“Haa… Quite the place you’ve got.”
The place I was brought to was a mansion with a rather blatant nouveau-riche taste.
The red carpets laid everywhere were so soft that I almost hesitated to even walk on them. The paintings and vases placed around the room were obviously expensive at a glance. I found myself looking around while still sitting in my chair.
He’s someone entrusted with a major trade hub. He must be making quite a profit. After all, he has thirty-six wives.
A maid with a distinctive hairstyle—pink twin-tails—poured tea for me, so I took a sip for now.
It was black tea. And it seemed to be a very good one. It had a deep aroma and strong sweetness, yet no unpleasant aftertaste lingered in the mouth.
“First of all, allow me to apologize for my earlier rudeness, Argento.”
“Huh?”
That was unexpected. Samakah-san suddenly stood up, removed his hat, and bowed to me.
It was hard to believe he was the same man who had just been striking poses and saying things like “Become mine.” His manner now was humble and gentlemanly.
Not only him, but the black-haired attendant and the armored men also bowed deeply.
“I apologize for acting forcefully. However, I absolutely had to secure you.”
“What do you mean?”
“Your Healing Magic is far too powerful. A mage with such power cannot simply be left alone. As the lord, I have a duty to report your existence to His Majesty… King Pleiades. To inform him that a powerful mage has appeared.”
…So what, the whole wife thing was just a pretext?
“…The real reason you invited me here is to have me meet the king?”
“No. Bringing you here was my personal decision. Even if I didn’t report you, rumors of you would eventually spread to other towns and eventually reach the king’s ears. Before that…before His Majesty takes notice of you, I needed to bring you here.”
So Samakah-san has the duty to let the king know about my existence, that I understand.
After all, both my Healing Magic skill and Enhanced Magic Power skill are maxed out.
In reality, many of my other skill levels are also at their cap, but for now the rumors about me are simply that I “heal any injury or illness.”
I possess Healing Magic so absurdly effective that it regenerates lost body parts, missing senses, and removes deeply rooted diseases altogether. And if that can be used again and again, then there are countless possible uses for it.
It could generate enormous profit. Reporting it to a superior would be natural.
But Samakah-san chose to abandon that duty. And not because someone ordered him to—by his own will.
In other words, he is actively going against the king’s orders…
“The king would make great use of you. He would send you to the front lines of the war against the Empire and have you heal wounded soldiers… The soldiers would thank you and raise their morale greatly to protect you.”
“…That sounds about right.”
“You would heal those close to the king if they fell ill, and heal the common people to gain their support… And with your unparalleled beauty as well, you would surely be elevated as a great mage, a divine messenger, a saintess, and many other great epithets.”
“Ah… yeah.”
Oh no, just hearing about it sounds incredibly troublesome.
That means running around every day, healing people everywhere, and always smiling like a saint, right?
No thanks. I want to spend my days lazily sleeping. If that happened, I’d never have time to rest. I might not even get time for snacks.
If it came with three meals and snacks, I could sleep whenever I wanted, and all the patients came to me instead, then maybe—just barely—I could accept it. But otherwise, no thanks.
“So… uh. Samakah-san, why did you invite me to your mansion instead of reporting me to the king? Is there some kind of political movement you’re thinking of using me for?”
What Samakah-san described doesn’t necessarily have to be done by the king.
For example, Samakah-san himself could do it. Every time his soldiers were injured, I could heal them. I could cure the townspeople’s injuries and illnesses to help him gain their support. If he did that, Samakah-san could even become the ruler of the country.
That’s the kind of power I possess. I’m aware it’s that extraordinary.
…Though it’s completely wasted on me.
The reason I put all my points into Healing Magic originally was to heal my own injuries. Now I use it to earn money or repay favors. In other words, it’s entirely for my own benefit.
I don’t have some noble heart that wants to travel the world healing people. I’m not a saint. I just want to nap all day while being supported by someone.
“I have no such intentions. I respect the king and have sworn loyalty to him… but there is one line I will not cross. This situation touches that line, so I made my move to hide you from the king.”
Unexpectedly, he denied it. I was certain that was the reason he took me for himself…but apparently not. It seems he’s satisfied with his current position.
If that guess is wrong, then I really can’t understand what Samakah-san is thinking.
He’s satisfied with his position, yet he’s willing to defy the very person who granted it. What exactly does he want?
“Nom nom… So what is this ‘line’ you mentioned?”
When I don’t understand something, it’s best to ask directly. After taking one of the cookies served with the tea, I asked Samakah-san.
Samakah-san suddenly stood up energetically, as if he had been waiting for that question. He walked along the table toward me, then spread his arms dramatically, almost theatrically, as though intoxicated with his own words.
“Isn’t it obvious?! Because it would be ridiculous to use a beautiful girl like you for such vulgar things!”
“…Huh?”
“To go to dangerous battlefields, be used as a political tool, be worshipped against your will… Oh, what a waste… it would be a loss to the world!”
“Uh… Samakah-san, so you were…seriously proposing to me?”
“Of course! Live as my wife, a simple life as another woman! If we all treated you as a mage with a slightly more skill in Healing Magic than normal, then even His Majesty will lose interest in you. That is how I will report you to him. Something as beautiful as you must not become a tool of politics or war… Those beautiful hands of yours are not meant for such boorish things… They exist to nurture love, such is the happiness of a woman! Argento, marry me… Abandon that overpowered burden of an ability and come live your life as a normal girl”
…Uh-huh.
Seems like this man is an even more hardcore woman-lover than I thought.
