Stopping was not an option in Seletina. Exhaling meekly, she cast her gaze in the direction Lichter had left. After a brief moment she continued running.
She couldn’t understand Lichter. She couldn’t understand what drove him. She even thought that his values themselves could be wrong. However, such thoughts were trivial in the midst of the blood-stained battlefield.
If Lichter had decided to go down, then that meant he could handle himself. Seletina had built up sufficient trust in his skills during the time they’d spent together. Which is why she could entrust the area to him and go somewhere else.
While running, Seletina occasionally glanced down, her gaze falling on the countless wolves that were overrunning the streets.
The blood from their victims’ flesh dripped from the edges of their mouths. Yet, despite this, the wolves continued to slaughter humans one after another, unable to satiate their hunger.
The guards in the town attempted to confront the wolves with their inadequate spear-handling skills, but they proved to be equally ineffective. A spear that was only half-trained managed to strike a wolf’s flesh but was deflected by the wolf’s tough fur.
The potential for a domino effect was evident: if one guard fell, the rest would likely follow suit. Like a whirlwind passing through a narrow gap, the wolf surged in, its powerful jaws gradually devouring the guard’s flesh, bone by bone.
As the stench of gore filled the air, those guards who had been alive earlier had already been reduced to dismembered masses of flesh. Witnessing the horrifying death of the one next to you could easily drive an ordinary person to delirium.
The guards, who were consumed by fear, had long since given up fighting.
“Don’t falter! If you show your backs, you’ll die!” Seletina’s voice resonated clearly.
The guards, overcome by fear, gazed skyward. There, a golden-haired young man danced with grace. A determined expression adorned his handsome face, and he held an exquisitely crafted Sacred Sword in his left hand.
Seletina let out a triumphant howl from the depths of her lungs. As she descended, the Sacred Sword’s tip traced an acrobatic path, effortlessly severing the heads of two wolves.
Seletina twisted her body in mid-air and landed gracefully, like a feather. She wished to strike down the alpha of the wolves, but witnessing any more brutality had become unbearable.
Seletina moved as if gliding through the air, wasting no time after landing, and once again beheaded the wolves on either side with lightning speed1.
Exhaling sharply, she readied Elyutinias in front of her chest. Eight wolves rushed at her in that momentary opening.
Her deep-blue eyes assessed everything in an instant, and she daringly charged herself at them. Swinging Elyutinias, she sent the blood on the blade spraying, blinding the three six-eyed wolves closest to her.
She sent the heads of the frightened wolves into the air. Taking down three blinded wolves was nothing short of child’s play for Seletina. Three wolf heads soared through the air.
Five to go.
The wolves reached out their paws like starving children, desperately trying to cling to Seletina, which had leaped into the air.
Their sharp claws closed in, aiming for Seletina’s guts, but the Sacred Sword under her control wouldn’t allow it. In the blink of an eye, the claws that had aimed at her fell prey to her swordsmanship.
Amidst the high-pitched canine screams, Seletina stepped on top of a wolf’s head, took a knife from her pocket and thrust it deep into the wolf’s back. The wolf cried out and hurriedly joined its comrades as they all ran around, howling and shrieking in agony.
In the blink of an eye, Seletina decapitated all the wolves, and they fell like dominos. Her Sacred Sword moved through the air devoid of mercy.
There was no sign of any Demons at that moment.
“……”
Seletina finally exhaled deeply and profoundly, sheathed Elyutinias and remained vigilant, scanning the area without relaxing her guard. The citizens who had failed to escape and the guards who had just arrived watched her in sheer amazement.
“W-Who are you?” One of the guards asked
“My name’s Tieck. I’m a wandering adventurer. Can I ask you something? There should be an alpha wolf, or someone that brought these wolves here. Have you seen it?”
“A-An Adventurer… Thank you… And yes. I-It’s probably that. It all turned upside down when that thing appeared. It happened when it dropped some kind of seed into the city.”
“That thing?” Seletina asked.
The guard pointed to the sky. The thing was flying high in the sky, behind it was the sunset-tinted horizon. Bat wings and a goat head adorned his slender stretched arms and legs.
Seletina recognized this demon, dressed in a tailcoat even darker than black. It was the Wearer of Death.
Seletina’s senses slightly dulled in the presence of the Upper Rank Demon. Its strength painfully reminded her of her time as Orthus.
She swallowed the viscous saliva and then turned to the guard.
“Evacuate as soon as possible!”
“W-What are you planning to do?”
“I’m going to take it down.”
“Take it down?! Are you crazy? Can’t you see how high up it is?”
The following moment, wings of light spread forth from Seletina’s back.
“A-Angel?!”
“Retreat!”
The tension in Seletina’s voice was almost palpable. She felt no fatigue and her body felt light. Seletina’s body was in the best shape possible. With the way she was now maybe she stood a chance.
It’s going to be fine. With the way I am now I can definitely take down an Upper Rank.
She ran her fingers over the Snake Rose crest on her neck, as if invoking a spell, and slowly began to rise, her gaze locked onto the Wearer of Death.
