“Don’t worry, I’m not gonna eat you or anything…” Leaving the terrified townsfolk scrambling on the ground behind me, I leapt lightly into the air.

My body floated up gently, soaring to the height of a third-story building. From here, I had a full view of the city.
Just as planned, the werewolf unit had surrounded the governor’s mansion. Looks like there had been some guards stationed there, but they hadn’t fared well.

“I told them not to kill if possible… but I guess it couldn’t be helped.”

With werewolves, holding back is hard—both due to their strength and fighting instincts.

I ran along the nearest rooftop and dropped down in front of the governor’s mansion.
Right then, reinforcement guards arrived—bad timing for them.

“Protect the governor!”
“Charge!”

Five guards rushed me with swords drawn, coming at me from behind.

I sent the first flying with a casual back-kick, then turned around and launched into the fight.
I batted aside a descending sword with my arm and snapped the blade in two. Using claws would be fatal, so I opted for a light jab to the chestplate.

“Guhh!”

Whoops. Might’ve gone a bit too hard. Controlling my strength is harder than I thought.
With no other choice, I took out the remaining three with low kicks. Their legs were probably broken, but I’d have the wounds healed with magic later.
By the time I finished thinking all that, all five guards were already sprawled out on the stone pavement.

“I’ll get you healed later, so just stay put.”

Saying that, I climbed into the mansion through a second-floor window.

The window I broke through was a crude piece of glass you’d never see in my previous life. Uneven thickness, full of bubbles and cloudiness—transparency was laughable.
Still, that single pane of glass cost as much as a wealthy citizen’s monthly salary here. But I shattered it without hesitation and infiltrated the governor’s mansion.
The room I entered was the governor’s office. I’d already scouted it in advance.
And just as expected, the governor was there.

“Who are you!?”

The person glaring at me was a woman, around twenty years old. Her outfit looked like a business suit, but it was actually formal wear for noblemen in this world. A saber hung at her waist.
I glanced around the room—no sign of bodyguards. Neither my nose nor ears picked up anything. Only the presence of my werewolf soldiers outside.

Making sure not to come off as hostile, I offered her a polite bow.

“I am Veit, vice-commander of the Demon Lord’s Army, Third Division. You must be Governor Aylia. Am I correct?”
“That’s right.”

Her face had gone pale, but she nodded with dignity. Still, her lips trembled slightly—she couldn’t form any more words.
She wasn’t exactly leadership material for an empire, but she clearly had the makings of a general. Certainly more than me, anyway.

I judged her a worthy opponent, and spoke as gently as I could.

“Our forces have taken control of the entire city of Lüenheit. Further resistance is meaningless. Please surrender.”
“I will not!”

She shouted with clenched fists, her face still pale. A respectable figure, if a bit stubborn.

“Lüenheit is a vital stronghold of our city-state alliance! We will never fall under the Demon Lord’s rule—!”

To silence her, I opted for a slightly rougher approach.

“Then die.”

I bared my fangs and took a stance.
As expected, she froze in fear, trembling all over.
Well, of course she did. I’m a werewolf—a monster who can slash through heavy armor with claws and run faster than cavalry. There’s no way this delicate young lady could win.
I stepped forward to further provoke her.

“For the honor of the governor, I grant you the right to fall in single combat. Draw your sword.”

Startled, she fumbled for her saber, but fear made her hands weak and clumsy. It was clear at a glance she wasn’t used to fighting.

“I—I am a second-class noble and… and governor of Lü… Lüenheit…!”

In her panic, she was trying to formally declare a duel, but she hadn’t even drawn her weapon yet. That part comes first.
I bared my fangs and let out a light growl. The glass windows rattled from the sound.
She screamed, dropped her saber, and fell flat on her backside.

“Eek…”

I nearly burst out laughing—but considering she was facing a werewolf, it was understandable. If I were still in my old life, I’d have been paralyzed with fear too.
I stopped growling and leaned down toward her, now seated on the carpet.

“You think you can take down a werewolf with that saber? Even if you defeated me, you wouldn’t be able to save this city. Just give up.”

But then Aylia picked up her saber and pointed the tip at herself. Her face was pale, and her lips trembled.

“Then… I shall—”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait!!”

I quickly snatched the saber from her hands. What the hell is wrong with this woman?

“Offing yourself won’t solve anything! Use your head for once!”
“My… head…?”

She looked up at me, dazed. Shock must’ve frozen her thoughts.

I sighed deeply and explained:

“Look, the Demon Lord’s Army has occupied this city. We haven’t killed any civilians, but of course they’re scared. You get that, right?”
“Y-yes… I understand.”

She nodded like a child being scolded.
I nodded back and continued.

“We do plan to rule over humans, but we’re not going to slaughter or enslave them. Life will continue more or less as before. Which means… we’ll need a human leader. You follow?”
“Um… you mean you want me to stay on as governor?”
“Exactly.”

As expected of a governor—she caught on quickly.

“To prevent chaos, why don’t we strike a compromise? Surrender and cooperate with the Demon Lord’s Army. Within reason, we’ll also honor the people’s needs.”

I waited for her reply.

Aylia hesitated, but her eyes regained strength before long.
Her decision came swiftly.

“If any part of what you just said turns out to be a lie, I will call on every citizen to resist with all they have. Are you willing to accept that?”
“I don’t mind. His Majesty the Demon Lord personally gave me full authority over this city.”

I nodded, and Aylia stood up. She extended a hand, so I returned her saber.

She held it respectfully with both hands, then formally presented it to me.

“I, Aylia Rütte Aindorf, Governor of Lüenheit, hereby surrender to the Demon Lord’s Army. I ask for your mercy and wisdom in governance.”
“Surrender accepted.”

I nodded. And thus, the urban battle came to a close.
