I don’t remember much about my past life—nor do I feel the need to.
My name now is Veit—pronounced VayT with emphasis on the T. Most people don’t pay it any mind, but personally, I wish they’d be more careful with the pronunciation.
Right now, I’m a monster.

“Lord Veit, infiltration complete.”
“Good. Once the advance unit gives the signal, charge in. Don’t wait for my command.”
“Yes, sir.”

I’m a werewolf—a monster that transforms from a human into a wolfman.
In my untransformed state, I look just as plain and forgettable as I did in my previous life. But once I transform, I become a black-furred wolfman.
Humans find me terrifying, but personally, I think I look pretty damn cool. As far as reincarnated races go, I’d call this a win.

Right now, I serve in the Demon Lord’s army. Specifically, I’m the vice-commander of the Third Division.
It sounds like a big deal, but each division is small, and there are multiple vice-commanders.
This time, I’ve been placed in command of 56 werewolf soldiers and about 200 dogfolk engineers on loan from the division commander.
Our target is a frontier trade city, a walled settlement of about 3,000 people.
Its name is Lüenheit.

From deep within the forest, I looked down at the city nestled at the foot of the hill.
Dogfolk messengers stood beside me, delivering a new report.

“There are roughly two hundred stationed troops. They’re spread out across the city for security.”
“You sure about that?”

One of the younger soldiers—he looked like a beagle—tilted his head, troubled.

“The report came from the werewolves who infiltrated the city, so we don’t really know ourselves…”
“Fair enough.”

Our mission isn’t to wipe them out, but to occupy the city.
As I walked, I gave the messengers their orders.

“Tell the dogfolk units to begin the advance. Stick to the plan.”
“Yes, sir.”

I watched the messengers dash back to their respective squads, then started walking toward the city.
At the gate in the city walls, guards were keeping watch over the flow of people. One of them eyed me, but I looked like nothing more than an ordinary young man with plain black hair.
One of the guards—wearing just a helmet and breastplate—held a short spear and stopped me.

“Don’t think I’ve seen you around before.”

I pulled a small bird-shaped whistle out of my pack.

“I’m a merchant, here to deliver toy whistles. I’m headed for the Petun Shop.”
“Hm.”

The guard took the whistle and gave it a quick blow. It made a silly sppyyorororo sound.

“Funny, right?”
“…Is it?”

He handed it back with a wry smile, clearly not sure what to think.

“You can go in.”
“Thanks.”

Just then, a commotion broke out near the gate.

“A monster!”
“Help us!”

Traveling merchants burst in clutching their packs, panic written all over their faces.

The scene turned chaotic in an instant. The guards surrounded the merchants.

“What kind of monster!?”

With pale faces, they shouted:

“D-Dogs! They had dog faces! And weapons!”
“There were tons of them!”
“Quick, do something!”

The guards glanced at each other but sprang into action immediately.

“Sound the bell—three times!”
“Send word to headquarters! Notify the other gates!”
“Close the gates! Get everyone inside!”

Travelers panicked, residents fled clutching their children—the whole area was thrown into chaos.
The guards, on the other hand, were well-trained and coordinated. Their morale was high. A competent force.

I slipped into the city amidst the confusion and took out one of the whistles from my bag. Out of sight, I blew it hard.
It made no sound. but the werewolves could hear it. It was a dog whistle.
That meant the plan would now move to its next phase.
To avoid drawing suspicion, I casually made my way toward the city center. That’s where the governor’s mansion was.
Before long, the city was thrown into further uproar.

“There’s a monster in the city!”
“A dog-faced beast!”

The infiltrated werewolf squad must have transformed and started their move. The panic was spreading.
Fortunately, the troublesome city guards were still fixated on the outer wall.

And now the reports were all mixed up: “dogfolk outside the city” and “werewolves inside the city” were getting jumbled together.

“A dog monster!”
“The guards are fighting them—we’re safe!”
“O-Okay…”

Perfect chaos. Though really, I wish they could at least tell the difference between the cute dogfolk and the fierce werewolves. We’re not dogs.

Everything was going according to plan. No unexpected complications. The time was right.
It was time for me to transform as well.
I took a deep breath and released the beast within.

“UWOOOOOHHH!”

No matter how many times I do it, transforming feels amazing. Power wells up inside me, and my heart races with excitement—like a kid at play.

Of course, for the humans around me, it was anything but fun.

“Eeeeek!?”
“Kyaaaaaaaaah!”
“A monster!”

People screamed and scattered, and I couldn’t help but chuckle.
Not that they could see my smile—now that I had the head of a wolf, all they could see was a terrifying beast baring his fangs.
