“Everyone, get in close! Yoyo and Shiu, stay behind the two of us! Lordsey, block off one side too!”

When backed into a corner with no way out, one had to create their own terrain advantage.

There were five players and one pet in total. Starry didn’t need to join the formation; in fact, the narrow space would only limit her performance. Her job was to go on the offensive and draw the aggro of two or three ghouls to ease the pressure on the party.

As for YoyoPink and Shiu, their movement speed couldn’t match that of the ghouls, so escape wasn’t an option. That meant it was time to form a wall-backed formation: Zane, the tankiest, at the front center, Endless Sea to the left, and Lordsey on the right. The Summoner and Mage would stay in the back for safe damage output.

Fortunately, the two rear-liners had relatively small character models, occupying less than one yard of space each—just enough to form an inverted V-shaped shield around them.

In Frenzy state, the ghouls’ movement speed was terrifying. They charged like students stampeding into the cafeteria after class.

“Summon—Little Butterfly!”

An orange-red butterfly fluttered out from a magic circle. Unfortunately, skill-based summons had very mediocre stats.

Little Butterfly
Grade Common
Level 17
HP 450
Attack 23–26
Physical Defense 13
Magic Defense 7
Skills None
Strength
Dexterity
Intelligence
Wisdom
Vitality

Compared to Lordsey, it was laughably weak. The Summoner class was highly unpopular for a reason: skill-based summons were essentially useless. Even at level 17, Little Butterfly only had 20-something attack and could barely scratch a monster’s defense.

And Contract Summons weren’t much better. Even if you managed to tame something low-tier—say, a rabbit from Beginner Village—it would have stats just as bad or worse than Little Butterfly.

Outside of close-knit friend groups, no one wanted to team up with a leeching Summoner. If you were a stranger, no one had any obligation to carry you.

As for why YoyoPink chose this class? Simple. She thought Little Butterfly looked cute and had a common misconception: that Summoners were easy to play and good for AFK farming.

Plenty of players thought the same. Sadly, the frustrating gameplay experience drove most of them to quit—or just delete their characters and start over.

Though Little Butterfly didn’t have much HP, it could at least take a hit. In a sense, it was like giving the team one extra layer of health…

Starry charged in first. Just like before, Autumn Moon Sword flashed with cold light, freezing the frontmost ghoul. Then, with a burst of movement from Thousand Flash Steps, she retreated from the battlefield.

“Invoke: Frost!” Snow and ice fell from above, and the air’s temperature plummeted by several degrees. The ghouls’ movements became sluggish.

This time, Zane had learned his lesson.

Invoke: Blazing Fire!

While the ghouls were still in disarray, a wall of fire erupted five yards ahead.

Naturally, the ghouls could sense the terrifying magic energy contained within. At this point, Zane’s magic attack had already reached a frightening 263–283! If he equipped the Energy Headband, it would go even higher—but he didn’t want to break up his Decayed Bone set just yet. The Bone Shield was still incredibly useful.

Still, the lure of fresh prey overpowered any sense of danger. Driven by hunger, the ghoul charged straight through the Flame Wall.

It lost half its HP in an instant—but it forced its way through.

While most of the ghouls were still pushing through the flames, Zane took the chance to cast Invoke: Mire!

This time, the slowing effect worked perfectly. Except for the lead ghoul that made it out, the rest sank deeper and deeper into the swamp. Three unfortunate ones were trapped directly in the fire wall and burned to death right then and there.

“Groooargh—” The monsters let out low, guttural growls.

Lordsey readied his throwing stones, waiting for them to step into range. Endless Sea also held his Fractured Hammer, poised to strike.

When the half-HP ghoul finally reached them, Shiu unleashed Flameburst, landing -319 damage. At the same moment, Lordsey followed up with Stone Throw, dealing -172. Not wanting to be outdone, the brave Little Butterfly darted forward like a moth to a flame and managed to land -8 damage.

“…”

Annoyed, the ghoul swatted it away with a single claw.

Little Butterfly’s health dropped to zero in an instant!

Bang!

Seizing the moment while the ghoul was focused on the butterfly, Endless Sea swung his hammer like a baseball bat and smashed it hard!

The ghoul stumbled back a few steps. It had to be said—heavy weapons like the Fractured Hammer were surprisingly effective against agile enemies.

A second ghoul rushed forward from behind its companion.

“Ugh, Invoke: Vines!” Zane said, binding one of them in place. “Shiu, finish off the one with low HP!”

“Got it!” he nodded, already charging up Mana Surge.

Meanwhile, Endless Sea used Taunt on a third ghoul, pulling its aggro while downing another high-grade HP potion. With Guardian Shield still active and only one target to hold off, he could hang on for a while.

Lordsey did his best to support from range with a barrage of stones.

Pulse Fist!

Suddenly, Snowy’s movement slowed. Her small fists, wrapped in white gloves, pushed forward in an oddly gentle, almost sluggish motion.

The Flower Sprite King sensed danger and tried to release Flower Toxin to paralyze the enemy. Unlike regular Flower Sprites, whose toxins only dealt poison damage, the Sprite King’s version also inflicted paralysis.

Petals unfurled and violet smoke poured out.
“Not happening!” Nangong had long since prepared a Charged Arrow—this was exactly the moment he’d been waiting for!

Whoosh!

The arrow cut through the air and struck straight into the stamen, triggering a bright blue damage number!

The Flower Sprite King flinched violently as the arrow struck, its casting interrupted on the spot.

At the same moment, Snowy’s strike landed directly on its body.

Boom!!!

-894

Critical hit!

With its low remaining HP, the Flower Sprite King was instantly KO’d.

“Holy crap… 900 damage?” Nangong was stunned.

Just then, a green healing number—+243—floated above Snowy, raising her dangerously low HP.

“Whew, good thing we brought two healers. Even Snowy wouldn’t have survived that without them. The poison damage is brutal! Antidotes only work at 30% efficiency here,” Wanderer said with a bitter smile.

They had been farming Flower Sprites here for two days. The two Priest girls who had been killed by Rainflower earlier had now logged back in—since Zaria had added them as friends, she’d messaged them the moment they were online.

After hearing that Rainflower had been beaten down, the two girls were so happy they nearly jumped for joy.

Since they didn’t have a fixed team, Zaria immediately pulled them into the party.

In a fully immersive VR game like this, support-role players were still relatively rare. After all, who didn’t want to play a DPS and dominate the battlefield?

That’s why every support player should be treasured like a rare gem. In the late game, a high-quality healer would be worth their weight in gold, since most of them already belonged to fixed parties or guilds. It was best to start building your own private healer from the early stages!

The long-haired girl on the left was named Princess Seraphine, and the short-haired one on the right was Lord Dukeette.

Everyone just called them Seraphine and Dukeette.

Their names actually had a bit of backstory. The two of them had been college roommates and had decided to play Dreamscape together. When they registered, Dukeette said, “Hey, why don’t you name yourself Princess Seraphine, and I’ll be Songtsen Gampo?”

According to the history books, Princess Seraphine’s husband was Songtsen Gampo.

Seraphine thought it over and happily agreed. But then… Dukeette chose this name instead. After leaving Beginner Village, Seraphine immediately grabbed Dukeette by the collar. “I agreed to be your wife, and you turn around and make yourself my father!?”
