“Have you had enough?” A calm but slightly annoyed voice came from behind Zane’s head.
This soft, pleasant sensation… Could it be the legendary breasts pillow? Wait, no, this isn’t the time for such thoughts.
From Starry’s perspective, Zane could clearly see himself leaning back against the chest of a young NPC girl. The scene couldn’t have looked more inappropriate.
Oh no, oh no. With this much favorability lost, how am I supposed to complete any quests here?!
Endless Sea had somehow already distanced himself from the situation. He stood to the side, wearing a look of exaggerated disappointment, as if silently declaring this had nothing to do with him.
…
“It’s like this…” Starry quickly stepped forward, yanked Zane up, and moved him to the side. “I heard from an elderly man about the troubles the village is facing, so we came here to see if there’s anything we can do to help,” Starry explained simply and directly.
“…!” The young girl’s expression turned suspicious. “Why would the village chief tell outsiders about something like this…?”
After a moment, she seemed to brush off the thought. “Never mind. This isn’t the time to question that. As you can see, the pharmacy isn’t operational. Not only are we short on staff, but we’ve also run out of most herbs.”
She continued, “If the village chief shared the truth with you, then there must be something about you that he values.”
Finally, a quest! Zane thought excitedly.
Even Endless Sea saw potential in the situation and walked back over, pretending he had been part of their group all along, hoping to snag a quest for himself.
“If you head north of the village and take the right path at the fork, you’ll come across a small hill. No one’s been there for a long time, but it should have a decent supply of herbs. If you’re brave enough to face the dangers, gather as many herbs as you can. I’ll reward you based on how much you bring back.”
Warning? Zane pondered the implications. Just then, another notification appeared.
System Notification: Endless Sea has requested to join your party.
Would you like to accept it?
“Ahem, my friend,” Endless Sea said confidently, “I think your group is in need of a strong damage dealer who can also lure mobs. With me on board, your quest progress will be unstoppable—smooth sailing all the way!”
Endless Sea had clearly figured out that Starry was the main damage dealer, but everything still revolved around Zane’s leadership.
“……” Zane hesitated. Back when they had teamed up with the Rainflower group, it was clear that having more party members significantly improved leveling efficiency. However, it was crucial for teammates to have decent skill and understanding of the game.
Endless Sea, clearly capable of soloing in the slime territory, had already proven his worth.
Accept!
System Notifications: Endless Sea has joined your party.
“Brother, I knew I could count on you!” Endless Sea said, laughing.
“Didn’t someone call me a noob earlier?” Zane asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Who said that?! Who would dare call you, Emberveil, a noob? Point them out, and I’ll give them a beating!” Endless Sea declared dramatically.
“…”
Cassandra’s face twisted with impatience. “Are you going or not? If you’re not, I’m closing up shop—I’ve got work to do!”
“No, no, don’t!” Zane quickly replied.
Accept!
Ding!
System Notification: Quest accepted.
Head to the hill north of the village and gather herbs. The more you collect, the greater the rewards!
…
“The north of the village…” At first, they had left the village heading east. It seemed there was no road leading north; otherwise, the players wouldn’t have all gone east. Still, since they’d accepted the quest, they decided to check it out.
A tightly shut gate stood before them, marked with visible dents and cracks. A young man in ragged clothing dozed at the watch post above.
Zane gave the gate a light shake, sending a cloud of dust falling to the ground. It seemed the gate hadn’t been used in a long time.
“Who’s there?! Who dares open the gate?!” the young man called out.
“We’re adventurers from another world. We’d like to head out to the hill and gather some herbs. Would that be alright?” Zane asked politely.
“No way! If you go out, you’ll just end up as more injured victims, further burdening the pharmacy. I can’t let you through,” the young guard said firmly, his tone responsible.
“It was Miss Cassandra who sent us. Don’t worry, gatekeeper, we can handle ourselves,” Endless Sea chimed in.
“Miss Cassandra sent you?” The young man thought for a moment and then said, “Alright. See that wild boar out there? It used to live peacefully with the villagers, but now it’s just a stupid, aggressive brute. Those massive dents on this gate? They’re its handiwork. If you can deal with it, I’ll believe you.”
“No problem!” Zane replied, glancing at the wild boar wandering outside.
The boar’s stats appeared before them.
| Mutated Wild Boar | |
|---|---|
| Grade | Uncommon |
| Level | 8 |
| HP | 500 |
| Attack | 35-50 |
| Defense | 20 |
| Skills | Furious Charge, Berserk |
| Description | Once a gentle creature, this wild boar has been corrupted by an unknown force, gaining the power to go berserk and knock down several strong young men. |
Its attack power was a whopping 35-50—two to three times that of a slime. Its defense was also 20, meaning Zane’s current attack of 21-22 would barely scratch it.
Zane still hadn’t distributed the attribute points he’d gained from reaching level 5. He decided to invest everything in Vitality, just in case.
After allocating all points to Vitality, Zane’s HP increased to 230, with 4 defense points. That gave him a chance to survive two or three hits… probably. Still, with such low defense, it was practically nonexistent. On top of that, the wild boar was a level 8 monster, three levels higher than them. He had no idea if level suppression would add extra damage.
The real problem, though, was the abysmally low equipment drop rate. After grinding slimes for so long, all they had to show for it were coins and quest materials—not a single piece of gear.
Starry, on the other hand, had invested all her attribute points into Dexterity, optimizing her for big damage output. Her attack power now reached a monstrous 50-55. It was clear that the burden of dealing damage would fall entirely on Starry. However, her HP was only 130, meaning one hit from the boar would likely take her out. Fortunately, Zane had faith in his dream-trained combat instincts.
“Am I seeing this right? An uncommon-grade monster? How long has it been since the server opened, and we’re already running into something like this? And it’s level 8, with that defense…” Endless Sea exclaimed. “I probably can’t even deal any real damage to it, not to mention that Berserk skill. Zane, maybe we should back off and level up first?”
“Is it really that tough? Let’s give it a try,” Zane said, confused by Endless Sea’s hesitation.
“Try? Are you kidding me? This thing’s attacks will probably kill us in two hits!” Endless Sea cursed.
“I still think it’s worth a shot. We’ve got a chance,” Zane insisted. He was confident that with Starry’s overwhelming power, as long as the boar didn’t have area-of-effect (AOE) attacks like the slime, they’d be fine.
“…Fine, I’ll give it one try. Worst case, we lose a level. Who told me to get on this crazy boat with you two?” Endless Sea said, holding his head in frustration.
“Why are you acting like this is the end of the world? Seriously,” Zane muttered before calling to the gatekeeper, “Alright, open the gate. We’re ready.”
“I’m opening it now… but if you can’t handle it, get back inside immediately! I’m a pro at slamming this gate shut!” the young man warned.
“Don’t worry, we’ll handle it,” Zane said confidently.
