“The slimes are too clingy. With your current strength… I’m afraid…” the middle-aged man shook his head.

“Uncle, I’m super brave. Don’t worry, just give me the quest,” Zane said, puffing out his chest confidently.

“No way. The village has already… I can’t allow you to go off and throw your life away.”

“Uncle, I’m his companion. If we go together, we can definitely collect the slime’s mucus,” Starry walked over and said calmly.

The uncle’s worried expression disappeared. “Alright, but please be careful!”

Done! According to the uncle, slimes were level 4 monsters, which explained why he was so concerned.

At this stage, only a few players were capable of grinding slimes. Even Shiu could only pull them one at a time, carefully strategizing against them, getting beaten to low health, and relying on passive health regeneration to recover before continuing the fight.

Although inefficient, this was still leagues better than the rabbit hunters struggling to progress.

Time to forge ahead!

Passing the rabbit spawn point, Zane saw that it was still packed with players. He ignored the crowd and kept walking.

“Another two newbies heading past us,” someone muttered.

“Who cares? They’ll realize how dangerous it is back there after they drop a level. Too bad, though—I wonder what that pretty girl’s expression will be like when she gets wiped out.”

Zane ignored their chatter. Soon, he entered the territory of the level 3 wild chickens, where there were noticeably fewer players.

The wild chickens had surprisingly strong attacks due to their passive skill, Critical Peck, which triggered a 1.5x damage multiplier. This made fights unpredictable. Before the area could be overrun with players, most people stuck to fighting them one-on-one; otherwise, continuous crits could easily result in instant death. And since dying meant losing an entire level, it was no small matter.

The players who survived here were fairly skilled. Watching a level 2 rookie leading a level 1 girl into the level 4 slime zone, one of them muttered under their breath, “Idiot.”

Looking at the few players grinding in this area, Zane felt a surge of pride.

The other players glanced at the two of them briefly before ignoring them entirely. They’d seen plenty of fools like this today—people who barely lasted a few hits before the slimes sent them back to the village for free.

Right, I still haven’t distributed the 5 free attribute points gained upon leveling up. Better to invest in vitality—wouldn’t want to get one-shot later.

Zane assigned all the points to Vitality. Including the HP bonus from leveling up, his health was now at 120 HP.

Not bad. I look pretty tanky now.

After finishing allocating his stats, it just so happened that a slime spawned two meters away. According to the official site, monsters below level 5 didn’t have active aggression.

Zane stood on the left, Starry on the right. While in a party, they both launched their attacks simultaneously.

Starry’s reaction was much faster than Zane’s, her sword striking the slime first—despite her attempt to hold back.

“…” Zane was speechless. His damage wasn’t even enough to break through the defense.

Better check the slime’s stats.

With a defense as high as 12, it was no wonder Zane’s attacks couldn’t penetrate. His attack power was only 11-12, after all. Even Starry only managed to deal 25 damage. The slime was absurdly tanky.

Naturally, after taking damage, the slime wasn’t about to let these two aggressors off the hook. Since Starry had dealt the highest damage, the slime locked onto her as its primary target.

The slime condensed its body into a lump and lunged forward to attack. From Starry’s perspective, Zane could clearly see the slime’s attack pattern. It was so predictable that he made Starry sidestep slightly, causing the slime to miss completely.

A “MISS” notification floated up.

Zane’s eyes widened in disbelief. That worked?! Acting purely on the reflexes honed from years of martial arts training, he had avoided the attack, but he hadn’t expected it to actually succeed.

Though, to be clear, it wasn’t his body doing the dodging.

If the slime’s aggro remained on Starry and its attacks couldn’t hit her, does that mean… we could kill the monster without taking damage?

While dodging the slime’s attack, Starry swiftly countered with another slash. Although the slime didn’t visibly react, it was likely furious at this agile foe it couldn’t reach.

The slime’s health was already at half. Zane didn’t neglect his male character’s attacks either; maybe he could snag a bit of experience while they were at it.

Just then, the slime suddenly curled into a tight ball.

What is it doing? Is it scared? Charging up? Could it be about to use Mucus Corrosion? Oh crap—it is!!

Both Starry and Zane immediately scrambled backward. Unfortunately, it was too late. The slime’s mucus exploded outward from its body, spreading a full 4-5 meters around it!

There was no way to avoid it now. Zane had no choice but to take the hit head-on. He controlled Starry to hide behind his male character—better to let the one with higher HP tank the attack. A level 4 monster’s skill would undoubtedly kill Starry, who only had 50 HP.

With 120 HP, Zane’s male character should be able to survive!

A giant crimson number floated above his character’s head.

Oh my gosh—my health bar is instantly emptied! If Starry had been hit, she would’ve been killed on the spot.

At least he wasn’t dead yet. If Starry could finish off the remaining sliver of the slime’s health, then…

Before he could even finish his plan, Zane’s male character transformed into a streak of white light and was sent back to the beginner village.

What just happened? Zane opened the system log to review the records.

“…” Zane was speechless. This attack was insane—how could anyone deal with something like this? One hit, and it was practically game over.

Thankfully, the mucus was a non-penetrative skill, so Starry was still alive.

Starry quickly delivered three consecutive slashes, finishing off the slime. Her experience bar shot up to 60%. One slime was worth as much experience as five rabbits.

Zane walked Starry closer to the slime’s corpse, but all it dropped was a handful of copper coins. No additional items. The slime’s materials must have a drop rate based on probability.

He realized just how dangerous Mucus Corrosion was. He had underestimated it earlier, and the price for that mistake was an entire level. Now, his male character was back to level 1 with 33% experience.

I need to hurry back.

“Hey, beautiful! How about forming a party with me? You’re amazing, managing to solo a Mutant Slime!” A male player named ‘Endless Sea’ approached and said enthusiastically.

Starry shook her head and replied, “I didn’t solo it. My partner sacrificed himself to protect me and lost an entire level.”

“Don’t worry about him. That guy’s a total noob. Not even recognizing an obvious threat like that? Losing one level is already letting him off easy,” Endless Sea remarked dismissively.

Wow, calling me useless right to my face. You’ve got guts.

“No thanks,” Starry said coldly, her tone growing distant as she walked off toward another area.

“Alright then,” Endless Sea muttered, shrugging his shoulders helplessly. This pretty girl has quite the personality.

Thankfully, the trip wasn’t too far. In less than 10 minutes, Zane made it back to the slime spawn point.

This time, Zane kept his eyes glued to the health bar, determined not to let his guard down. He figured that Mucus Corrosion was triggered when the slime’s health dropped to half. As long as he retreated out of range before it activated, he could perfectly take it down without issue.
